Brian. Seeing your video of that Opterra making overhead passes brought back a lot of good memories. Those big old Avro Vulcans lumbering overhead on training flights was quite a sight. This was back in the height of the Cold War, so we got to see a lot of different military aircraft fly by. Smoking F-4s, whistling F-104s, Fiat G-91s and the then brand new badass on the block, the F-15. Was some good times. Thanks for asking.

My mate has had one for about a year and loves it as a change. Sits on his chair with his goggles on FPV. Great flight times. He can get nearly 30 minutes but he glides quite a bit more than you were doing. Try it when you have a bit of wind as it glides really well. Not a speed merchant by any means but incredibly difficult to stall and just so relaxing. It’s not designed to be a speedy aircraft it’s an FPV platform and for that it is fantastic. He normally flies aerobatic things that scream about the sky but loves this as a change. Never heard of the dive issue will have to mention it to him.

Hey Brian! Can't believe I just now came upon this post of the opterra. I've had the 1.2 m for a while. I actually been flying mine with a 3300 4S. on a nice day with 15 mile an hour wind I have flown it for 52 minutes with throttle management doing a lot of gliding.. I actually used a demo and cut little grooves into the length of the wings and installed LED lights. 3 rows on each side. Upon 1st receiving I did get a pretty good cut on top of my hand during launch. What's black-and-blue for months and And still manage to do it again haha.What I have now been doing is putting on the throttle cut and and putting the throttle stick at about half, then tossing it and Then just flipping the throttle cut to off. it instantly gains power and climbs. Thanks for all you (and the camera crew) do and put into this hobby. Few realize imo what it takes to maintain full time employment plus what you put into your channel and then still also have a private life. Ya'll are Rockstars at what you do.keep it up! ✌️✌️

Another good video. I wish I could step out my front door and fly. But I finally got my first ever flight in on Tuesday, and instructor was willing to let me go up in the wind, with no buddy box! I never had to hand the control back. I was told I did very well and honestly I credit you and a couple other RU-vid channels and all the little pieces of flying advice you give throughout your videos. Oh and as far as it being like an addiction. I'm selling anything I can that's not nailed down to get more stuff. Selling my guitar amp this afternoon so I can buy RealFlight tomorrow(haven't used it in 10 years). I sold my WW1 Bayonet to go towards my apprentice. I rely enjoyed your video of Optera 2m. I must get mine airborne again. I stupidly - on second flight I'd forgotten about the rear prop - sliced the back of my hand so badly the prop broke and I needed plastic surgery. Just as well prop broke otherwise I would have had to landvit before being taken to hospital. Anyway all well now. I have fitted a hook and with 20m of bungee it launches really easily and gently. My airstrip - like you I'm lucky enough to have my own - is quite restricted and surrounded by trees. I changed the ESC for a spektrum and have reverse thrust. It works really well. With a little reverse the angle of approach can be very steep and slow. Prop braking set to hard so it parks quickly. I get very short and controlled landings. Such a graceful aircraft. In due course I will probably fit crossfire so I can inspect the farm with FPV. I'm about to fit ZOHD kopilot which I have on my ASW28. I have painted the tops of my wing fluorescent orange to aid orientation. It flew away one day to the north. I later got a WhatsApp msg from a friend living a mile south to say it had landed undamaged in his garden. On that I decided to get insured! A shame you've never done a review on the Freewing SU35. I'm building one at the moment. Looking forward to playing with variable thrust.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
Very cool! So sorry to hear you cut your hand!!! I love flying this beauty. I would LOVE thrust reversing on this plane, but also think I could make some creative spoiler creations to make her land slower...split flap down and spoiler up simultaneous - that would be cool! I think an Avian ESC would do the trick, even easier though ;)
@tabdycollins
@tabdycollins 2 года назад
@@BrianPhillipsRC I fitted the Avian 60amp and AR637T. I liked your tip on mixing a wee bit of up elevator on a switch and have now incorporated it on all my hand launch aircraft. That and SAFE means I can put transmitter on ground whilst launching. I considered cutting an airbrake into the battery hatch - there is a video on that - but using an Avian ESC was so much less hassle. I haven't been able to do either with my Opterra 1.2m because it is fitted with A3235 and GPS and I can't find a spare channel. Reluctant to remove what's installed because I want the RTH function whilst I learn to fly on FPV. I've only flown it once and when I tried the RTH it turned East and flew away at 40mph at 300ft. Nothing I did regained control. It just flew off into the distance! Luckily a friend had the FPV goggles on. He lost signal but we kept power on, got in car and at every field gateway did a sweep in hope of a signal. Eventually we were lucky and got a faint signal and were able to home in on it to find it had made a gentle landing in a corn field. Why did it fly away. Perhaps I hadn't calibrated compass properly and perhaps it hadn't logged "home" properly. I don't understand why I wasn't able to over-ride the RTH. I now have a tracker which will be in it on next flight!

Tim and Rafael The Transponder thing isn't a "Thing" YET...but it's on the docket. When it is a thing, HH will have our back. Just be careful about the AMA insurance...it may not pay out if you REALLY need it. We are insured with REAL insurance...but I don't like to talk about that sort of thing publicly - it's too litigious out there.

Brian, I love this plane but the CG is driving me nuts. I am either too nose heavy or she won't climb. I am afraid to take her out of SAFE to even trim it out because she comes down so fast. Once it's in a dive it's hard to get her out of it. She flew fine today on my first flight, but was nose heavy bad so I moved the the 2200 3S back about an inch and a half and I couldn't climb. She skid in the grass and burn the motor. I have a spare motor so it's no big deal but I am just frustrated because I like flying her but the COG is making me lose my ..... . Well you know

Really suprised how many of the same planes I have as you. I have this prehistoric looking pterodactyl too...Ive had only two problems with it, nicked my finger tossing it and now I throw it with an oversize tig welding glove (one shake down and its off), the other is it takes so much room to land unless aiming for grass. Have you ever tried spoilers or airbrakes on any planes (or wings)? dont really want to carve into the foam on top for the spoilers unless it really makes a difference, Horizon sells them for a little over a hundred but theres no real world type specs on them that I can find anywhere..besides sail plane people use them. Oh I could kind of hear those kids in the back round faintly...Im thinking mullets and meth may be involved in a Joe Dirt sort of way😆

I've never tried air breaks, but I think they would work. I'd maybe try a trailing edge break, up and down on a split surface for the inboard portion of the wings. Could also TRY a Thrust reverse with Avian ESC first...might be easier to test and then if it doesn't work, you could use it on another plane.

@@BrianPhillipsRC The thrust reverser is something Id never thought of...THAT would most likely work really well! most likely could almost stop the thing midair if you wanted....glad I asked, and I dont have to be chopping up the foam for something that "might" work..or not.
