Theres a point in guitar where you reach the technical ceiling and just have to keep exploring and being creative. You will then realize that there was no ceiling at all to begin with, it's a dark room never been visited before and that's why this band is so good. A mesh from metal, rock, trap, pop, hiphop influences. If this genre was known 50 years ago, it wouldn't be as interesting today. But the band gave birth to a new level of originality and creativity. Kudos to Tim, Scott, Clay, and Clay!
This track shows a lot of artistic growth (not their first time but still). Using virtuosity as a vehicle for amazing songs rather than using songs as a vehicle to show off virtuosity.
I agree. They provide actual melodies, many melodies in each song. Have not heard anything like this before 2012 or so. the combo is amazing....and the lack of bends makes it so smooth (I know they bend sometimes but not often). so good
@@schmiggidy Imagine thinking that music can be "summed up" in... chord progression. Lmao if there's one place where the "cover" is more important than the "book", it's music. The same 4 chords can give birth to a banger or to a lame ass pop song. Chord progression doesn't mean shit.
@@willowway3349 Korea makes anime too. And KPop hair is stylistically much like Protagonist hair in Japanese anime. It doesn't mean it's a japanese hair style.
This song has been stuck in my head nonstop. Then I sit down at my computer and think, "ehh... I could listen to Ego Death right about now" and then I listen to it 10 times in a row. Such a fun song to listen to.
@@schmiggidy It always strikes me as odd when someone calls these guys unoriginal, as though there's something wrong or lesser with the "tried and true". Everyone's sense of music is built upon the foundations of what they've heard before, and then they may or may not choose to iterate upon that with their own sound, and they certainly have a signature style, a sound that is distinctly them. It's fine if it's not to your taste, but calling it "unfortunate" or basic is rather disingenuous.
I’ve been listening to Polyphia for a little while now and I still can’t even imagine the amount of effort this guy must have put in to reach this level of guitar. I’m an amateur guitarist and half the time I still mute on the most basic chord transitions. It’s always seriously impressive to see how versatile a guitar can be between virtuosos.
There are good guitarists, elite guitarists, professional elite guitarists - and then the innovators. Guitarists that cannot be copied - because their sound is completely unique. The gap between players like Tim Henson, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Eddie Van Halen, Hendrix, Clapton, Gilmore and not so many more - is truly the apex of the pinnacle. Such a treat be alive and hear this talent unfold before us.
@@bcp5296d i think he means doing stuff we haven't seen before, obviously they can be replicated, but its there creativity and originality that sets them apart
He's the type of person that focuses on his passion, makes it his lifestyle, and works hard for it. Now that they're getting more trendier on RU-vid, there's no other path than the top and attract the bigger mainstream audience. At the same time, he's still young. He's a single man sitting around in his studio all day touring the world occasionally, his lifestyle is defined for him to keep improving at his own genre.
@@lx4302 Agreed, definitely a testament as to what can be achieved with persistence, time and copious amounts of passion. It's been awesome following along for the last 8 years
@@DanielSmith_19 If you don't play guitar there is absolutely zero reason to spend an arm and a leg on an intrument that you don't even know if you'll be sticking to. Get yourself a nice, $200-$300 model that is perfect for beginners... Unless you're just a rich man lol.
@@SpkillerGaming fr I’ve been playing a year and fuckin love my squier strat especially with all the mods!!! Cost me £120 new lmao fuckin love it, and no plans on gettin a new guitar yet, just more pedals😆
If I could play like this I’d literally never stop. I keep imagining the things I could accomplish musically with Tim’s skill set under my fingers. But good god what a mountain to climb. I love the guitar so much.
polyphia is a really good band which introduced me to different type of music. I not only like the band members but the people who listen to them, because among them are some who have really good knowledge about music and they mention somethings which gets me to google those things and discover a whole new variety of music. I remember someone mentioned in a playthrough video of Tim that the song he was playing was inspired by paco de lucia, and I discovered flamenco. I can now play the melody of malaguena on my ukulele albeit it is now clean, I can play it that you recognize it is that. Thank you Polyphia I consider you artists with a significant impact on music culture. Take care guys and reader you also take care
I genuinely think Tim is probably the best guitarist alive right now. I don’t mean even just purely technique because if you want that, then you probably want Tosin Abasi. I mean technique + catchy + beautiful, memorable guitar lines. I think before the end of his career, he’s easily going to be one of the most insane guitar players to ever live, and will be put in compilations of the best guitarists ever, up with people like Vai and Satch and the like.
@SoftserveSodium I’m sure there are people who are TECHNICALLY better. I just feel like Tim is on his way to being the best guitarist alive. If he doesn’t ever achieve top 5 best guitarists to ever live, I am CONFIDENT that he would be within top 10 or 20 AT MOST. He is well on his way to just absolute ridiculous level skill- not to mention HE WRITES THIS STUFF. lol
This song was exactly what I was craving from this album. It was executed really well and had a bit of everything without feeling forced or dragged out, just amazing musicianship through and through.
Math rock my ass. This kid is just laying down some old school chord progressions with some tasty licks on the side! Rock and Roll through and through...
I'm 47 and have studied the world of guitar my whole life ,Tim is this generations stand out he's is one in a billion. My favorite guitarists are Satch and vai because they write songs people actually care about so does Tim
this literally vibrated my brain i couldn’t find the words to comment, also dude those weightless pulses at the ego death cut send me to the stratosphere *every* single time i hear them, it’s the hypest thing ever and a perfect creative touch
wow! I wasn't expecting lightning fast arpeggios finger picked augmented with harmonics and percussive bass notes pounded out on the low strings! incredibly innovative!!!
@@agemiran1520 Here ya go bro I got a different video for you to watch. I made this video out of pure passion for Polyphia so I hope you give it a shot. ☺️ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-svi4vHGUihI.html
I also admire their delivery and attitude. Just totally chill while doing something absolutely amazing. Hanging out in sweats and fuzzy slippers. too cool.
@@Verociity Same here he always did remind me of Chris Heria... one works out and one plays guitar. Side topic (I hate doing this) but I made a video for all Polyphia fans to watch. I do NOT want subs, I just want people to enjoy it) Give it a shot and I hope you guys like it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-svi4vHGUihI.html
@@Verociity they could pass to be cousins tbh and its crazy that they're both half Chinese. The only difference is Chris is half Cuban and Tim is half white.
As a long time Polyphia fan glad you posted this , I have seen so many people doing reaction videos wondering if this was actually even playable live . Of course it is ! You guys are incredible !
I rarely comment but feel compelled to do so. You are undeniably one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Thank you sir, I am in awe. Keep rocking in the free world!
It still seems impossible the way he just passively plays masterpieces 😂 everyone covering his pieces are always so rigid and focus and he just looks like it’s a warm up
It helps that he wrote it himself so it fits his thinking and musclememory and has been in his head for longer, but yeah that said even the intro part i have to concentrate to get it right-ish :)
Thank you so much for all you do. Everytime i dont feel motivated to practice i just watch one of your Videos and booom im motivated again to practice 3 hours just to get nearly as good as you are some day !
@@Trahzy he is innovative and his style of playing influences a lot of similar artists and people playing at home. Just like Jimi Hendrix or Jimmy Page did in their prime.
@@srenlrkholm9105 Well except Tim's more of a brand. He's got the whole pretty boy / sensitive clean cut robotic aesthetic going on. Idk just my opinion I don't hear anything but harmonics taps slaps slides and little runs mashed together when I hear his stuff. Just don't feel it.
I am currently experiencing ego death and found my musical talent after getting off anti-depressants. My electric guitar arrives tomorrow. When I was up at 3 AM after listening to old emotional guitar songs and crying I searched for ego death and found this. Now I’m crying harder. Thank you.😢
We're very lucky and blessed that you exist in our lifetime. All your hardwork and creativity inspire us. Also, I like how Polyphia/Henson songs can be perceived many ways, even songs I've listened to for years still make me feel or understand it differently.
It always takes me more than one listen to fully grasp how good Polyphia songs are, but this one especially. After a couple of listens I'm just as addicted to this song as I was with Playing God!
Its crazy how the first time I heard this song I wasn't really a fan, but it slowly grew on me and now, is my number 1 favourite polyphia song by a long way and now I struggle listening to anything else at all because this song is just so good. High expectations on the full album tim, you boys are are smashing it with the new releases. Goat seems so lacklustre in comparison to all these new songs
god, imagine being his roommate, I mean, of course there must be moments when he's repeating the same note or a song, but I wouldn't really mind because I play some instruments too. not only he's skilled, but also creating unique music and inspiring many people to either try harder or, well, put their guitar back 😅
