@@tiaansteyn7836 you obviously have not seen the intake manifold on a diesel engine. with EGR, they get loaded with soot. the soot comes from the exhaust gas that is recirculated into the intake stream. a combustion process, deprived of oxygen by way of the egr system is cooler and therefore less efficient. This is why the DPF is needed, to catch soot particles. When the DPF gets filled up, it regenerates by burning off soot. this is done by added fuel to the exhaust stream, which makes it very very hot. so hot that loads of NOx is produced ( the stuff EGR is supposed to mitigate) to reduce NOx, DEF is added to the exhaust stream. The whole system really is like a circle jerk...

Been driving a PD105 for two years with my electronic EGR unplugged, and an open exhaust. I drive past cops, turbo whistles loudly and they don't even look. Haha. They are concerned with sound level in my country, but it's a small diesel with a turbo and it's quiet enough unless I floor it. I'll be adding another turbo in the future. Compound style. When I do a full overhaul at 400,000km I'll pull the EGR out and weld it. I want to keep the antishudder valve because of the amount of air I pump through and don't want a runaway.

Blocking EGR without proper remap is actually harming the engine (remap changes diesel fuel injection to start a bit earlier, reducing economy and increasing noise). Local overheating of piston heads is the major damage. Majority of soot is already present in cylinder, only small portion re-enters. Warm-up takes longer, so that colder engine wears out faster (especially for those believing that modern engines magically overcome laws of physics and don't require warm-up). And sticky residue is actually a soot mixed with oil, so if your engine leaks oil through cylinder head seals, or through turbine, it is not good disregarding of EGR. Also EGR valve is not always open, it only opens in certain circumstances, controlled by ECU.

EGR always open during low RPM specially if it is VGT turbo. the longer you stock in a traffic, the greater exhaust gas circulates in the engine because at idle, the turbo closes and all air going to the manifold were passing thru EGR no clean air from air filter.... that's the reality vehicle manufacturer accept because life span of vehicle become shorter.

The egr only works when at constant rpm Soo like when cruising on the highway Having exhaust resuscitated at highway speed lowers combustion temperatures reducing emmisions but having lower temperatures can be better for engine life When you put your foot down on the accelerator the egr isnt is shut If your looking at improving issues to get cleaner engine run an oil catch can. Removing the oil vapour from your ccv (crank case ventilation) will prevent a mixture of wet oil and dry soot from the egr to mix (im talking diesels because thats what i know best and well if it isnt diesel i dont have much interest) This is what happenes to particularly diesel engines where intake piping can build up a carbon layer to the point it restricts intake piping. Oil from your ccv can coat intercoolers which means the air coming through isnt in direct contact with the metal reducing the heat transfer Long story short run a catch can leave the egr alone and if you can some companys offer an intake cleaning service to remove carbon build up on the intake But what do i know im just a mechanic whos worked on cars semis and now working on tractors and have a good knowledge on emission systems
@autoinfogroup1629
@autoinfogroup1629 2 года назад
Hey there, totally agreeing with you, i may not be that an expert but like to bring up some facts. Oil mist from ccv has actually helped the engine to stay longer as it partially lubricates the cylinder walls from inside and supports piston ring's life, especially the compression rings. That oil maintains a constant lubricating film thickness inside and the rest is burned away. Another fact, a dry soot is best polishing agent, so a piston with that so speed n with the dry soot could polish the rings fast causing early compression loss in cylinders. Now, These oil mists when mixd with soot forms sludgy, looks bad an may block the air passages but comes less abrasive than dry soot. Im sure the engine would be dirty, sludgy and need constant cleaning but for a bad look comes with some benefits.
@mattsayers9047
@mattsayers9047 2 года назад
@@autoinfogroup1629 the cylinder wall lubrication is maintained by the ways of cross hatching when the cylinder wall is honed oil gets past the rings because of the cross hatching you couldnt rely on ccv for lubrication that would destroy your engine. @@walterbaldwin3643 I strongly believe that is some form of properganda! i.e some of the engines on the world market could still be found without an EGR system fitted in certain regions. And I've certainly never detected any diesel knock on the vehicles I've worked on or owned over the years, and some of those have been on the road many years without the EGR system working. The only vehicles I've encountered that have engine damage due to excessive heat have been either because of a coolant system issue or faulty fuel injector. The proper way to block EGR is do not fully block it, unless you remap the ECU to disable the EGR function. It's sound weird, but if you completely block the EGR, the ECU will get the back pressure then it will trigger the error code and engine light will be on, then it may put your vehicle the limp node. What you can do to avoid this and don't need to remap the ECU is just drill a 10mm hole in the middle of the EGR blank plate to allow a small amount of pressure go through, this will fool the ECU that the EGR still working.

Fact check: "Function of EGR is to LOWER efficiency?" - are you high? The way PHYSICS works EGR INCREASES efficiency. It doesn't lower engine life - if anything, there's and extension. Agan: that's physics, not politics. In petrol engines EGR actually increases efficiency. In diesels it only reduces emissions somewhat. "Block off the valvle to improve quality of the vehicle" - another lie. Blocking it does NOTHING in most cases, and actually makes diesel engines knock more. DELETE - somewhat yes, BLOCK - heck no. "Blocking EGR will return the engine to peak efficiency and less fuel needed to maintain same power" - NO. The way EGR works it DECREASES fuel consumption when engine is under constant load (i.e. driving on motorway). It DOES NOT DECREASE MAX POWER AND FUEL CONSUMPTION WHEN NEEDING MAX POWER. because it's TURNED OFF then. In order to see any gain you have to DELETE IT, but that does any good for older diesels mostly, and it's a minor gain. "blocking the CO2 re-entering the engine, it gets better power on pistons at lower rpms" - true, of course, but this is because it will use then MORE FUEL. "(...) this makes manifold, pistons and other components clean" - not really, no. At best it decreases it somewhat, because THE DEPOSITS COME FROM BURNING ENGINE OIL IN CYLINDERS, which comes from PCV (CVS). "car is more responsive to accelerator pedal" - true, but only in specific situations. And arguably you may not even feel the difference. OLder cars - sure. Newer cars (after 2010) - NO. "(...) avoids early blocks in DPF and CC" - this is so laughably untrue it's not funny. Think on it - IF WE DO NOT REDIRECT PARTS OF EXHAUST GASES BACK TO THE CYLINDER, WHERE THE "SOOT" IS BURNED, HOW IN THE HELL WE REDUCE DEPOSITS IN DPF? This doesn't compute: with EGR working there is less particulates hitting DPF, so how blocking it reduces particulates hitting DPF? "(...) incrase NOx and other gases" - Heck, no. if we put more CO2 into the cylinder, then we burn less fuel and produce less CO2 in effect. NOx are slightly different - they come from high pressure in the engine and increased fuel-air ratio. This is why especially diesel PRODUCES MORE NOx naturally (it is, after all compression-ignition engine). "(...) increase sound and vibration" - IN OTHER WORDS - INCREASE KNOCKING, WHICH IS BAD FOR THE ENGINE. "(...) decrease Turbocharger lifespan" - yes, drastically. "burning fuel at higher temperature improves efficiency" - true, but it also increases drastically emissions of NOx, which is very harmful. This is the trade-off with the EGR. "this makes the engine run hot" - yes and no. IT DOESN'T IMPACT THE WAY ENGINE WORKS WHEN MORE POWER IS NEEDED. Engine will run hotter on lower RPMs and when idle, but not when driving dynamically. Thus the "hot engine running" is a myth or shoddy EGR block/delete work.

First of all, the EGR reduce the risk of engine knock because it cools the engine due to less O2 being in the cylinder, which means you can add power. Secondly if the O2 sensor sences to much NOx it will believe the engine is running lean, which it is. As lean conditions create a lot of heat, which is a good condition for NOx to be produced, the ECM will correct the condition, thus it will inject more fuel to counter act the effect. It will reduce fuel effiency and only risk more damage, with barely any difference in power. That's why EGR deletes often lead to check engine lights, as the ECM sence poor conditions. However the EGR aren't open throughout the entire rev-range or during every condition, it open and closes constantly to keep the engine running good and keep emissions low. So the power is the same as in a vehicle without an EGR fitted from factory, but with less emissions. Tampering with the EGR, can potentionally damage the engine, lower fuel efficiency, increase emissions and mess with warranties.

Totally agreed with what you said except one minor bit. O2 sensors don't actually read NOX or even oxygen. O2 sensors are actually thermo couplers which actually sense temperature difference. When heated they create electricity. When hotter they create even more electricity. So the computer understands that when the sensor gives a higher spike of electricity it is therefore hotter thus a lean burn is occurring and then sends more gasoline to cool down combustion. It's really interesting how this works. I explain this to you because you seem to be the smartest person on this site that can understand this. I use this explanation on many mechanics who don't understand this but believe that oxygen sensors are capable of measuring oxygen.

What’s your daily drive cycle like? Idling for long periods and driving low speeds is one cause for more frequent regen cycles and also hurts diesel emission systems. DPFs and EGRs love higher loads/highway speeds. Depending on the engine hours vs mileage, ash (byproduct of DPF) will accumulate over time and limits the DPFs capacity, needing to be removed and cleaned professionally. Regen will not damage injectors and I don’t recommend disabling regen, your DPF will clog and cause much worse problems.

Here in the UK all road vehicles have to pass an annual roadworthiness test known as an MoT (ministry of transport). An emissions check is part of this test. I know of some (not mine) vehicles with an egr delete that pass this test with no problems. Partly due to them being modern common rail systems that burn cleanly anyway and partly because the test cannot simulate load on the engine. So an egr delete, whilst being illegal, would not necessarily cause a vehicle to fail an emissions check.

Low fuel injection doesn't mean high fuel efficient. Cars with EGR when on city n slops needs to rev up hard to maintain the load ie low throttle response compared to cars with no EGR. Also the soot n particulates re-entering the engine will be continuing which wears out engine fast compared to clean intake engines. Not a big fan of EGR delete but it's the reality.

@@autoinfogroup1629 when one "blocks" egr via via ecu tune, there wont be flat spots or lean conditions, etc. So yeah, if one's dead beat on blocking egr, best is to do it via ecu

EGR Make car smoke??

@autoinfogroup1629 7 месяцев назад
Egr makes the combustion temp a little less..so less NOx is produced at the cost of carbon particulates or smoke...not at alarming rates but you may see some when accelerating...this is not a drw back but its supposed to work like that.

Did the check engine light come on after you did the delete? Did you modify the oxygen sensor to keep it from sniffing with an extender pipe?
