this is the type of egusi tutorial I was looking for!! My parents are Igbo and they never added onions or tomatoes to the soup, so when I was searching for a tutorial, I was very confused. But alas, I found yours and this is exactly how my mother made it. I'm sooo excited!
Flo, I cook this combo all the time in my house. I did not learn it from my mum or Grandma as they never made it. It just came to me after I got married (20 something years ago) as I liked ordering egusi and ogbono soup (mix half and half) whenever I go out to eat, so I figured one day why don't I cook a concoction of both and it worked. Never knew it was an old Igbo recipe, but as they say "necessity is the mother of invention!" 😁
This is the only way we Cameroonians cook ogbono soup. I remember making it once in Uni and my Yoruba friends were so surprised that I mix ogbono and egusi. They ate it and till today always ask me to make it.
This brings great memories :) My mum calls it emergency soup ooh, whenever we can't decide between egusi and ogbono soup. Thanks for reviving this great soup. You are awesome!!!!!!!
My mom did cook this soup for us sometimes. Yes I enjoy eating egwusi, bitter leaf and ogbono. Flo I definitely agree with you that this soup would be going into extinction. The soup looks delicious and yummy. Thank you for sharing this video.
@@FloChinyere I definitely agree with you. I love it. Unfortunately we just cooked egwusi soup yesterday. I. will definitely make this soup combo really soon.
That’s how Cameroonians cook ogbono soup. They use uziza preferably. But they could also use Ugu or bitter leaf. They also cook it in onepot. Add ogbono after egusi is done.
I don't think I am from the olden days at 29, but we cooked this soup a lot, and it was our favourite(my dad and I). But like u said, no body talks about it again. I think I should make ofe egwusi n'ogbono again. Thanks for the reminder, aunty Flo
Honestly, back then when my mum use to prepare this soup, it removes all smiles from my face. But recently I use to make it in my home cause hubby likes all this native mix too much; Egusi and ogbono, egusi and okro, egusi and cocoyam, etc, etc😅😅. Good job dear👌🏾👏🏾👏🏾
LOL @ removes all smiles from our face! The things that our Mums cooked in those days that we did not like, eh! Kudos to your traditional hubby, I hope he has made you begin to love this soup. 😉😉😉😂
I'm Cameroonian I cook this soup all the time, my favourite with swallows. But I add okazi instead, I slightly pound it in a mortar for extra taste and slime. Very delicious!!! 👌👌
Making this right now, I just said let me check if it’s on RU-vid and lo and behold the one and Only Flo has a recipe 💃🏽( am not surprised) . I ve liked without even watching. God bless you sis. Yes my MUM always makes this now I am continuing in my own home
I remember it when I lived in Port Harcourt and in boarding school. Yes I am from the olden days ooo, I will be cooking it today with ogasi leaves to eat with yellow garri.
I've seen people order obgono and egusi soup together and I always tought it was odd but I never thought that they could be cooked as one dish. Very insightful. Thank you Aunty!
Yes, that's a common soup combo. But that one mixed in a plate after the fact tastes different from this one o. When you cook them in the same pot, there's this fusion that creates a whole new taste. You are welcome. :)
hahahahaha, I never knew this soup exists until I got married. my husband loves it so much. he calls it onugbu soup😁. at first I didn't like because I was like why waste this ogbono and Egusi when you can actually cook and enjoy them separately. but nowadays, I think I now like it more than him😂😂. thumbs up sister Flo.
I eat this combo but served separately in the plate with swallow. I never knew it can be cooked togethet like this, i was just woowed. Flo always showing me the way, thank you.
Juliet please cook it together and you will see that that on-the-plate mix tastes different from this one. :) When you cook them together, they "enter" each other well-well LOL
One of my favourite soup prepared by my sweet mummy 😊 am currently in my cooking this exact soup following ur step😂😂 cuz when my mum use to make it i nva used to be around 😂😂😂 thanks flo
I'm a river state girl my step mom is an igbo women she never taught me this and neither did she cook it. I'm saving this for myself. My two favorite soups combined this should be yummy
My dad does not eat Ogbono soup so my mum has to mix it with Egusi for him to eat. So I grew up seeing my mum make it this way and now that I am married, I also make it and my husband likes it. Thanks 👍
Hello good morning my beautiful sister. You are really doing a great work here learning every day your wall thanks very much. Please I want to ask you where you got your dry blender I like the way it blend very well and quickly.
Chaiii, yummyness wan finish me for this video, yesterday I cooked the same soup in exactly the same way, just that I added uziza seeds and ogiri okpei (iru) it turned out soooo delicious 😋 with poundo yam e de make perfect sense 👌😇🥂
Mum used to make this a soup when we were younger. We did not like it so when we realized that that you could make egusi on it's own and we loved it more, ogbono and egusi died a natural death. I will try to make this soup again after about 30 years
Wow, this is new to me, I know some people order mixed soups at restaurants/Buka. But never knew it could also be cooked together from scratch. Thank you for sharing this ma'm
I love this soup so much. This is the only way my mom would get me to enjoy ogbono when I was younger, even up till now. This is because I don’t like ogbono on it’s own, I never have😂
Your presenting this combo soup of old has made me to remember when we cooked water leaf with stew. Also, we had bachelor's soup, that is, stew and egusi combined. You use it to eat both rice and swallow. You cook the stew, then you add plenty of ground egusi, but you first of all add water to the egusi and stir it well to prevent lumps before pouring it into the stew. Nice aroma, good for boiled rice and swallow, especially eba,. Cooked mostly by bachelors in those days when I was a kid.
Hello Flo Chinyere, I like your program, and I am a regular viewer. Please, I have a question to ask you. As an Igbo man it sounds odd, and it's a shame to ask such a question. Can Ogiri be used in cooking all kinds of soup, or specific soup? Your reply will help. Thanks in advance.
Ewo!!in those days,i use to murder this soup at one of my Igbo's friend's place with Akpu,it was one of my favorites, after Abacha....though,i have never prepared it myself.Thank you aunt Flo,for bringing back old,but beautiful memories.Nne,...thank you.....😍😘😊
Yes,I almost forgot this soup and have never made it since I got married".Back to life combo".Will definitely give it a try and send it down with Akpu.
@@FloChinyere you are really a gift to man kind I also plead with you to embrace Christ as much as Jesus has given you as gift to mankind . you Are a blessing
Yes I know about this soup and I still enjoy it till tmorrw. Very delicious combination. Do up you know what, it dtill trends in my town Nanka especially during funeral and traditional ceremonies. Flo do you know about egusi/onugbu soup. This is another liking finger combination. But in this case, the quantity of onugbuused is not as much as the one used in plain onugbu soup. Try it out and let me know what u think about it But
Hello Ma, I just saved our dear Egusi and ogbonor soup from going extinction. Mine was slimy because the ogbonor was quite much, but tasty and I love it that way.
I used ugwu as my vegetable and it's nice too. I'll use bitter leaf next time. I like cooking and it's my first time to cook this nice combo soup. Akpu is the swallow for it. Chai! 😁😎
I came across your channel looking for other soup recipes that are different from American and Mexican soups served in all the restaurants. I was near drooling at the very end. Also I was deeply saddened thinking I would never get to try it. I live in California and was thinking there is no way I'll find the right ingredients like Egusi or Ogbono. So I searched for Nigerian restaurants near me and found a home that serves take out dishes in the city just north of me! The second picture on their website is Egusi soup!
Wow! I have never seen or even heard of egusi/ogbono combo. And I'm as igbo as they come. This is rather interesting.... I'll have to ask my mom about this.
Though I'm not Igbo nor from the "olden days" but it's my favourite way to enjoy egusi soup. We looooooooooove it in my house and I doubt if it will go extinct in my family. Thanks for the video.
