Ehrich & Graetz lamp Matador burner service & polish

My recently acquired Ehrich & Graetz of Berlin "Matador" Brenner (burner in German) introduced in mid1890's. Very efficient design. You get a very large and bright flame with almost zero smoke and little to no kerosene fumes. The Matador burners use a 3" wide flat wick but shape it into a cylinder as it feeds into the burner. The flat wick is shaped into a compact circular shape which gives a large area for the flame in effect almost tripling the size of the flame. These are side draft burners. The feed air enters through the side grills and rises up through the burner to mix with the kerosene fumes. The mushroom shaped flame spreader directs a jet of air to feed the flame while the hat shape on top spreads the flame outwards towards the chimney. I have checked the burner out and now will polish the brass to look like new.

These lamps pulled us out of the dark ages and gave us more light and heat. Kerosene also improved the ease of usage and did a great job in heaters/stoves as well. Besides that it had a way cleaner burn than wood and candles. They are still like magic today! I got two of these and they are like new. The light can be compared with 3 watt LED of 30 watt light bulb with a heat output up to 400 watts (1360 BTU).

They lit millions of homes around the world in days gone by and still do today. We use our lights all the time, mainly for mood lighting. The other day during a 19 hour power outage we were able to close off and heat our living room bathroom with a few of these lights and it was 5 degrees Fahrenheit outside at the time. The cherry glow really uplifted our spirits and it sure beat sitting around in the dark

Thanks for sharing. I just discovered one of these in my house. The lamp must be over 100 years old. With a little study and and some lamp oil, I got it lit. The light that it produces is amazing for a little lamp. I need to find a wick for it as the one on my lamp is getting short. I don't know about anyone else but the nostalgia and maybe even the spiritual connection with the humans that used these lamps before me really seems to turn on when you light it and get the flame just right. I think that if we all gave a nod to the humans that came before us, and think about the sacrafice's that they made so that we could populate the earth today, maybe just maybe the world could be a place where we could all live in harmony. Well said. People nowadays are so wrapped up in new technology that we find it hard to look backwards. People have used fire for thousands of years and in many parts of the world it’s still an important part of daily life. It’s in our DNA to be attracted too and fascinated by a flickering flame. Especially if your a firebug like me. For wicks supplier in the USA try oillampparts.com. Used to buy from them. The best wicks come from Europe. They seem to get the Cotten density and weave perfect

I've seen people represent the width with lower case L, apostrophes & lower case i. It seems people see this symbol differently? I always thought that it looked like a lower case i, but I'll defer to your knowledge. Yes in the US we mostly have flat wick lamps & use inches. Its a simple system. However I have always liked the circular burners, especially the European ones. My wife's grandfather from Norway gave me my first one. That got me into this "line" business. Thanks for the clarification!

Spajdude. Thanks I knew it was something along those lines. I just remembered that the more lines, the wider the wick. This burner is 20iii but I have a larger E & G that is a 30iii. That is a big burner.

Gotta love these great lanterns. No better kerosene lantern available than original E&G Matador or DHR Ideal Brenner. I you need more light, you got the Alladin and Petromax. I would take this great indoors lantern over any of them (and I got Petromax already)...nice and bright light, no mantle, no sound, no pumping, does not use much fuel and is very beautiful and romantic to boot.

Yes. These need the correct mushroom flame spreader to work correctly. Many times you see them for sale missing the flame spreader and they are worthless without it. The flame spreader alone can cost as much as the whole burner. I buy broken burners just to get the spreader.

Line is actually a length unit. 1 Foot = 12 Inches = 144 Lines. 1' = One Foot. 1'' = One Inch. 1''' = One Line. :-) For lamp wicks the old french lines are used. For the burners with wicks in a circle, the width is measured with the wick folded in half. But the measuring system isn't consistent. For example, some burners marked 15''' use a 14''' wick.

Interesting video, thanks. The burners with the key lift galleries like yours, particularly the Matador ones, seem to be pretty scarce and probably early. Nice to see the flame spreader with E & G logo, as well as the wick winder. I have a hunch that - due to popularity - E & G probably licenced a UK lamp maker (maybe Veritas?) to make the Matador burner for British consumption as the only ones I've seen here have the star on the wick winder knob and the flame spreaders have no maker's identification.

Your correct. The gallery lift and/or snuffer versions are much less common, thus harder to find. They are more common in Europe. We find them visiting my relatives in UK and wife’s in Norge. You’ll notice E&G, Veritas, Den Hann on ebay from both USA and EU sellers but the rarer models are mostly sourced from EU sellers. E&G licensed to many lamp makers back in the day. Their design was also widely copied by other manufacturers.

It looks great after polishing no doubt! I'm however a bit split about the question of polishing brass and especially items with moving parts. Polishing agents are by nature abrasive and they do inevitably get in the moving parts increasing wear quite considerably. You could was it afterwards but then it'll tarnish much faster as you was the anti tarnish residues of the polishing agent of. Personally I've come to the conclusion - don't polish brass unless it has a bad patina. That burner I think had a nice even patina so personally I'd leave that at a clean and a lube of the moving parts. Things with ugly spots I polish, wash and then makes sure they get a nice even patina (just touch it all over the place for a few days and it'll usually go without problem). Some items I give a coat of suitable lacquer but that depends on the item. Some alloys of brass gets a very nice even patina in the dish washer but that depends on the specific alloy as many brasses are made form scrap metals with contaminants (fine for the item) or deliberately to give it a special property - lead f.ex. is common in marine use. That's usually reserved for simple items to give them a try in the dish washer. To get an even finish they should be polished first. Especially one Indian plate made of "special" magnetic brass(!! heavy contaminated :-p) got a nice matte patina which is seems to keep very well. Use it so set the cooking oil bottle on.

Hi, thanks for the weary interesting and educational videos. I am restoring an old Lamp myself, and got some questions. How do you know if an old lamp is supposed to have a Flame spreader? My lamp has a center draft, but it’s not a big size lamp. And I can’t find any trace of a flame spreader ever being used. And what would the result be if it was used without one?

+Richard Eidevåg Know the burner or see what info you can find on it on the internet ;) On some you can see in the center tube there's stops to prevent a flame spreader to go down too far or a center post to mount on on if it's the type with a stick center post. Unfortunately you can't judge by the burner glass. I've seen many Kosmos burners equipped with a Matador glass - perhaps therefore people are selling them cheap because they work like s..t then :D Also the reverse probably can't be out ruled either. A Matador type of burner without flame spreader given a Kosmos glass. That however might actually work decently. And then lots of both Kosmos and Matador burners with a tulip glass meant for a deadflame flatwick lamp - neither of course working no where near what they should.

From the difference I can see, the Kosmos center draft, without flame spreader has a higher burner at the inside. The Matador with flame spreader are flatter. The Matador has a bulbed glass while the Kosmos is wide at the feet and suddenly narrows into a straight tube.

Use apostrophes instead if i's for Lines. That's more accurate. ;-) You still use Feet and Inches in the US, and I wonder why you dropped the Lines? Maybe it's easier to say ½ Inch than 6 Lines?
