Just got my mitts on the Andy Summers flanger with an xvive 3009 doin the swirly stuff. It's got that deluxe mistress low end but seems to be a different chipset / design than the XO versions featuring mostly reticon 5106 or 5107, among others.

Thanks a lot, I think it sounds very musical and accesses some extra harmonics that you expect from an Analog flanger. I think I liked it the most with controls low around 9 o'clock, that's plenty of movement but not overwhelming.

Apparently it’s the same as the XO electric mistress. Loved mine.

I still can't figure out what the difference between this and the Electric Mistress they already sell. Sound-wise.

@@ordinalkirk the xo mistress deluxe got discontinued and seemed to usually use reticon rd5106 or rd5107 bbds, which must be in short supply and I'm surprised they used them for so long. The new Andy Summers version seems to sound really similar and have about the same range of controls but uses xvive mn3009, and whatever circuit changes are required to use that different chip set but I think it's meant to sound about the same. It's quiet and full sounding, if you want the iconic mistress articulation from the early days I would look for the pastfx elastic mattress or retro sonic flanger among some others. People seem to be very happy with the Mooer eleclady, as well I imagine they were running out of reticon chips and had to revise the circuit anyway for the xvive chip, and probably decided to get Andy's name on there to facilitate some new sales and cover the discontinued deluxe mistress.

Does yours squeal when in filter mode, and the range up around 2:00 ish? I hate that mine does that even though I would rarely use that setting. Ehx told me they all do this, shame on them.

Hey Michael - really interesting moment there with the noise on the flanger and the comment on isolating my power supply. I get that sound also with the same pedal and my Thorpy camoflange. What's weird is I am using expensive isolated power - no sharing. I wonder what's up. Appreciate you pointing it out.
@michaelfowler3187
@michaelfowler3187 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for the note, and that is interesting that you're still getting that chirping sound, I assume it's like mine was where it's faster or slower depending on your rate, but very noticeable indeed, I've even heard it on that pedal show in some flanger episodes. I first noticed it on a fulltone choralflange and I thought I was isolating that, but it might be worth moving the flanger earlier in your chain - in case a sort of impedance or buffer issue is contributing to that. I would try the pedal alone with no others and introduce a few to the chain, one by one to see the impact. If you have a compressor going into it or a boss Buffer from their tuner for example, I'm not certain that would cause the chirping but that's where I would search if I were certain the power supply is isolated, in case those are contributing. I don't expect that pedals after the flanger would have much to do with it, again assuming they aren't actually sharing the power supply. The 9v adapter from ehx would be good to help test this to be sure, but I have found their adapter to be kinda noisy in other ways on pedals that don't need all that current. Good luck solving that, if I can bounce off any ideas I'm happy to try and help, but not an expert by any means. Active pickups is another potential complication- do some trial and error and let me know if I can offer any further ideas.

Hi. Does this pedal have a bit of delay ? Thanks
@michaelfowler3187
@michaelfowler3187 8 месяцев назад
@nunoharris There was not a delay effect turned on but the room was a bit verby and mic / camera placement relative to my guitar and amp all affect that. The flanging effect is based on a slight delay, though, around 15 ish milliseconds or less - nearly imperceptible but enough to get these comb filter effects. The central delay time is pre set on the pedal, but the depth control is how far up and down that central delay time is being affected. So yes and no, it is an extremely short delay time but if you were hearing a sort of longer echo or verb thing, then that was probably not the pedal , If that makes sense. Slightly longer delay times become "chorus" effects, around 25-30 milliseconds. Eventually that becomes slap back and loses that double tracking comb filter quality.

Hello, thx you for that video, also,I don’t get the difference with the new electric mistress deluxe, is there any? I mostly play darkwave (gothic) oldschool music with a roland jc and amp2 strat and i was considering buying that new electric mistress deluxe but now im confused with this new one 😊 Ok im not a big fan of the Police but i like their guitar sound 😊 i viewed video of comparison with other clone of « electric mistress » the moer etc… but defintively I prefer the sound of the ehx 😊
@michaelfowler3187

Thanks David- this Andy Summers one is not so different from the previous model- they decided to start using Xvive 3009 bucket brigade device in this and gave it a new name - however it sounds very very close to the previous "xo" mistress with the black and green graphic. If you dig the sound I would say to consider the pastfx elastic mattress, or that mooer eleclady does get a lot of praise. To me Andy's guitar sound was not only the flanging but the high pass filtering, and the moon flanger doesn't filter much bass out like the earlier models did. It's rounder and fuller and less crispy sounding if that makes sense. The previous XO models used some older chips, such as the reticon 5106 and some others - I reckon they ran out and had to redesign things a bit with a more modern chip- and make use of Andy's name on a new release. If you just want the swirly sounds it's a decent sounding pedal and the design of Andy is a fun factor for me- but hard to beat the PastFx flangers in sound quality. I had some issues with EHX support as they think the filter matrix dog whistle sound is normal, so shame on them. The earlier xo model should sound as good and be cheaper to buy- or heck even a Boss bf2 or bf3 could keep you happy. Don't under estimate the power of the high pass filter, the Elastic does that beautifully. The retro sonic flanger is probably next in line for sound quality and a little less bright, but more articulate than the moon flanger here, if I was splitting hairs.

@@michaelfowler3187 thank you for your complete and interesting answer. I completely understand the concept of high-pass filter which made that pedal sound so unique somehow like a fixed wah). I already have an original Boss BF-1 😅 (yes the big blue one 😅) but dont use it much as the bypass is such a catastroph 😂 The moer elady dont sound the way I like, at least on the video I viewed. I didnt know the pastfx elastic mattress and I will check it for more info. Thx u again for ur informations 👍👍

@michaelfowler3187
@michaelfowler3187 10 месяцев назад
@@kasperdenouden7650 congrats! Yeah it's no slouch- people seem a little peeved that it was a lazy re-release of sorts by ehx but it's a nice solid pedal in its own rite. Let me know if yours squeals in fixed filter matrix mode around 2:00- they tell me all of them do that but I've witnessed at least one on RU-vid that does not. If you like the pedal but think it could be better, happy to point you in some other directions. I find that very low rate and low range achieves a nice sound, and it can get wild from there, but little bit of range goes a long way on this.

The new Andy Summers flanger is the exact same De luxe electric mistress XO pedal. Same circuit, same components. Just change the casing . In fact, now the XO model has gone out of production. This thing in my opinion is really incomprehensible. Among other things, inside the flanger there are modifiable trim pots, where it is possible to make the flanger much brighter and closer to the original mistress, but the electro harmonix technicians have declared that the new model will be calibrated exactly like the XO model . So for those planning to buy the Andy Summers flanger, know that you are buying the XO model. Incredible but, unfortunately, true .
@michaelfowler3187
@michaelfowler3187 Год назад
The Xvive mn3009 and some components around that chip are the only differences in my opinion- it's easy to see under the case- other xo models tend to use rd5106 or rd5107 and I expect sound a bit different. If you want the vintage tone find something with bass trimmed like the elastic.
@silviolutti1522

@@michaelfowler3187 The speech is another. We're not talking here about what I or anyone else wants but the true nature of the pedal of your video. This pedal has nothing to do with the sound of Andy Summers at the time of the Police. It has a completely different sound identical to the previous model of De luxe XO, and yes, if you want to get that sound (or Gilmour's) you have to go to other pedals, like elastic m. by pastfx or Retrosonic flanger. Personally I preferred to take the Mooer E-lady, in my opinion unbeatable in terms of sound/quality/price ratio. (And it doesn't cut low frequencies)
@michaelfowler3187
@michaelfowler3187 Год назад
@@silviolutti1522 I might be misunderstanding part of this but I was just saying that the Andy Summers model and the previous XO models are indeed nearly identical, aside from the xvive 3009 which is probably what prompted them to rebrand it with Andy's name. I do not think it sounds like Andy or that era either, I think we are mostly if not completely in agreement about the pedals and alternatives. I'm somewhat critical of but understanding of EHX design decisions. Regardless of trying to sound like Andy 40 years ago I find the Andy Summers model very nice and inspiring to play, it's a great pedal - just not worthy of Andy's namesake in how misleading that can be for fans.

It's a bit noisy especially with the dist. ii engaged but I fell in love with the mxr dist ii sound after getting the dreambox by made by mike. I think he's quite busy these days but worth an email or Facebook message! To my knowledge he has never made another "buster sword" as I named it, and it's very crammed and tricky to fit in the box for him but the sound of zen slamming into the dist ii is an amazing high gain fire breathing distortion sound and the other direction pushing dist ii into the zen drive has more nasally results but is incredible for fat present leads and more volume. Great combination. In megaman x3 you can play as zero so I went with a nerdy theme there and coupled with my FF7 love, to name it the buster sword for a sort of pun.

@michaelfowler3187
@michaelfowler3187 Год назад
Functionally / logistically, No I do not think the differences if perceptible to a player let alone an audience or listener - would be substantial enough to justify the price tag. I assume you mean the mooer eleclady right? I haven't played one of those in a long time but unless you are really diving into differences in the EQ treatment and treble content, the mooer should be a really solid choice. I can think of more versatile flangers but this sound is more stylistic- just like this pedal, I got it sort of because I'm an enthusiast but I have some other flangers I prefer either in general versatility or for specific mistress tones, this Andy model is solid and strong but not xfactor good.

@rareform6747 If your '77 is operating well, I bet it sounds better than the current ehx flangers. This current version has a lot of bass in the signal whereas older mistress pedals I think trimmed quite a lot of bass off to increase clarity or perhaps improve headroom on the bbd Chips. It's a cool pedal but not quite the same sound I think Thanks for watching and listening.

I have to ask man - you have a veritable fortune on that pedalboard but I couldn't help but notice you have the absolute junkiest tuners on that Strat! Those things are the bargain barrel tuner and aren't even sealed. The guitar sounds great! I'm just so surprised you tolerate those things while have one of the cleanest and sharpest pedalboards I've seen. No knock on ya, I enjoyed the experimental playing - just made me chuckle.
@michaelfowler3187
@michaelfowler3187 Год назад
That's awesome of you to notice haha- maybe you could help me verify then if my Strat is indeed an 80s Japanese Squire Strat, because the serial number is nonexistent and those tuners not only bug me sometimes, I dropped the guitar at a gig last year and the small e string tuner is absolutely crooked and liable to break completely if I don't remedy that soon. It's a backup guitar but over the years has been my go-to because it's easy to tune (the floating bridge is mostly locked down, into a hard tail style Strat for easier tuning). Somehow it mostly stays in tune - once I let it settle there for a couple hours it is much more stable. If I go from standard to open d etc. there are slight intonation issues but noticeable "flex" going on where the guitar doesn't feel 'settled' for want of a better word. I've had that guitar much longer than the pedal board, I like to play acoustic and bass and a nicer american Strat through it, but admittedly the Japanese Strat or whatever it really is, has laughable tuners. I should upgrade them but honestly they perform better than expected even after dropping it off a little stage. The pedalboard grew over time, it definitely deserves better tuners!
