I'm using the Rams Head RI with a Guild S-100 Polara with Bare Knuckle War Pig HSP90s and I can attest to the fact that it fucking rips with P90s. Even better if you hit the front of the pedal with a boost. The LPB-1 darkens it considerably but I'm looking forward to throwing a Naga Viper at it

In general it seems like pretty much every iteration of the big muff loves single coils.

Yeah they're awesome for just screwing up the whole business model for those very overpriced boutique companies. They're like "oh you wanna sell a klon centaur clone for $300? Here's our klone for $60". And they've got like 10 different big muffs now. For all the different eras. You want a smashing pumpkins one? Then you can get that one. You want a David gilmour tone? You get this big muff. You want a Russian big muff? Well you can just get the new cheap reissue sovtek big muff. This new ram one sounds interesting to me. It sounds way smoother than the other ones. It's less muffy/wooly. Damn I might have to get this one as well. It's different enough. I thought when I got my Sovtek Deluxe big muff which is very versatile and like double the size, double the amount of knobs, that that was all I'd ever need for my big muff needs. But I'm already considering getting this rams head one too. Hmmm

I asked at a tech electro-harmonix who says there is no noise gate built in. He said that used low noise transistors.

He also stated that the pedal is true bypass. So it shouldn't affect tone when the pedal is off.

@@fragtagninja1633 it is true bypass, so it will not affect the tone if the pedal is not engaged. In fairness I haven't dug around in the Ram's Head reissue, so it is possible that the noise gate is not featured in this circuit. I am talking about my experiences with the Green Russian and Op Amp pedals that do use this method to lower the noise floor. I do have questions about these 'Low Noise' transistors, as a lot of the noise on previous circuits were due to there being so many gain stages in the circuit rather than the transistors being of poor quality; but this is purely speculation on my part.

Can you link to where you heard the Opamp and Green Russian have those kinds of gates you mentioned? Or a schematic? The only gate built into the newer muffs I've seen is the adjustable one in the Sovtek Deluxe one.

@@ianguest2011 I think that tone is plenty ballsy, but doesn't have enough grit, if we're talking tonal qualities. I love tone with bite, like Dimebag, or the Black album. I also miss the personalities in different tones.

To me modern metal tone sounds very thin. I personally don't feel any balls without a bit of low end sag. I agree tone lacks personality these days, everyone seems to have the Ola tone. Check out Dishonour the crowns tone though they use EVH III's but manage to get the tightness and still be crushing without the generic 5150 tone.

Leon Todd has a really good video on what makes a guitar tone good or bad. Ultimately, you just have to make do with what you got and stop chasing other people's tones because you're never gonna get it. Just do what sounds good to you.

You should check out the mxr classic Fuzz. Didn't expect to like it as much as I do. The Earthquaker Spires might do it for you as well

Lol no it wasn’t. The original layout like most big muffs was just three knobs in a row Why would three knobs in a row resemble a ram? Lol It’s clearly named after the figure on the bottom of the pedal.
