Something I noticed in my muff search is a lot of people’s clean tones are too dark and dull, or just generally something I wouldn’t use. It might make the pedals sound better in the demo but not in a real life rig - so I appreciate him using a nice clean tone here! It gives me a better idea of how the pedals will react with how I usually set my amp. Super helpful

I did this last week at my local store, and let's be honest: the differences are barely audible. I chose the Triangle and the store guy told me. "Right choice, I think it has more low end". And the truth is that I took it because I found it slightly less bassy and thought it would cut more in the mix. So ...

There is a difference but it’s very slight and doesn’t make either better. The rams head has a tad more low end but the triangle has more gain.

Yes, you can here a difference in tone between the two. I've had the Triangle since it was released. This vid made me purchase the Ram's Head as well. Thank you for posting this demo/review.

Thanks for the great comparison. Surely similar. Nothing a slight twist of the knobs can’t compensate for. Having bought the original back in 70 (and still have) I picked up the Triangle for giggles and grins. Hope to buy ALL the other reissues someday as they drop in price to complete he collection.

I slightly prefer the triangle tone but prefer the design of the rams head 😂 the real question - will I ever know the difference in the effects chain with 13 different pedals

This is exactly the video I needed... I was trying to decide beween these exact two pedals. Even after watching other people's comparison videos I was torn on the decision, but your video makes me want to get the ram's head. I actually just ordered it.. Both pedals sound great - as does your playing - but this video showed me that the ram's head is the one I'm after. Thanks! :D

I bought triangle when ri first came out... it’s been sitting in drawer, I’ve been busy w. sunface and sunbender 1.5.. was cleaning today & found triangle, it’s blowing me away.. So pumped, heavy doom tones!

The differences really come out when the Tone and Sustain controls on these two pedals are turned up. The Triangle is raspier and a bit more scooped, whereas the Ram's Head is more balanced across the frequency spectrum with more note definition.

I just bought a Ram's Head but I can't get the Triangle out of my mind. While the Ram's Head is detailed and "in focus," I feel like the Triangle's sound is so pleasing. Oh well, I can always sell my Rams Head if I change my mind!

This may help some people understand the differences in David Gilmour's guitar between Dark Side of the Moon and say Animals. The Electro-Harmonix Triangle Big Muff fuzz pedal is a faithful re-creation of the original '69 Big Muff pedal. So, this is more like the tone Gilmour was using on Dark Side. The Ram’s Head Big Muff was David’s main distortion pedal for the Animals tour, his 1978 solo debut, the recording and touring of the Wall and Final Cut. Hope this helps someone.

Gilmour didn't start using a Big Muff until the 'Animals' sessions. It was all fuzz face prior to that.

I do understand that Gilmour used the uni vibe and Fuzz Face pedals. My explanation of the tone of these pedals is what EHX advertises and demonstrates on their web page. If you use or listen to the 2 pedals, you can get a tone that is very close to Dark Side and Animals.

The Ram’s Head cuts more, and I know it’s weird to talk about clarity of a fuzz pedal, but the Ram’s Head sounds more articulate and has more clarity. Just my impression.

I have been using EHX since the 70s. They are affordable and give you the best bang for your buck BUT.... I will gladly pay a little more for a better on/off switch. I run all my vintage pedals on a board to a loop so they can be out of the loop and also wear and tear on the button. I have had TWO reissue Muffs button break by HAND simply pressing it. They were replaced but imo are not gig quality. Sound great though.

I think the triangle sounds more like a true fuzz...has more fizz...but that being said, the rams head has a creamier smoother sound...that I prefer...which is why I own it. To be honest, I'm probably gonna pick up the Triangle too...I like that fuzz sound as well

I could be wrong but i think the rams head doesn't fizz out as much on the the low notes on the neck pickup...

You are correct. I own every muff they make, The rams head (to me) is simply a triangle with better note clarity and less unwanted fizzy noise. Which is why i ended up removing the triangle from my rig, literally everything I used to play with the Triangle sounds better with the rams head, so I think EHX kind of made the triangle obsolete when they came out with this. Now the Green Russian, Op Amp, and standard, all sound different enough to be worth buying, But it your on the fence with these 2, get the rams head.

Both still outstanding pedals. The Rams Head is a reissue of Dave Gilmour’s go too. The Coils are spaced out more to allow lead notes not to become blurry. If your looking for Rhythm Fuzz then Triangle. If your a Lead players you’re going to want to Rams Head for that separation.

Ram's head sounds a bit smoother and less shrill. Which is better will just depend on what amp you're using, what band situation you're playing in etc.

At some settings they sound nearly identical...all the other times the Triangle sounds better/clearer.

It's really hard to tell the difference in tone from a RU-vid video. Can someone who owns both let me know which one has a little more rip and sputter? I'm a fuzz-head, and i actually like a buzz-saw, snorting, almost blown out-sounding fuzz. Right now, i use the original, large NYC Big Muff daisy-chained to an MXR distortion + to get that nasty sound, but I'm looking for something in a single pedal that's a little more practical for general use, while still having a similar grit and growl to it. To me, it sounds like the Triangle may be the one, but if someone could let me know definitively, I'd appreciate it

1:34 - 1:50 was the only sample on which I prefer the Triangle. 1:57 - 2:10 I can really hear the string separation that EHX claims on the Ram's Head.

Ram's Head has a small increase in gain over the Triangle. Otherwise nearly identical.

Great video thank you! RU-vid audio conversion seems very accurate to me and more than enough to hear small differences. If I upload audio then re-record it back from RU-vid and compare waveforms the sum/difference is basically nothing. Saw a guy doing it and tried it myself, wasn't my idea. Maybe in the early days of RU-vid the conversion was more aggressive/lossy which started the meme, don't know but could be. Triangle is bassier and more scooped, ram's head sounds tighter and a little cleaner. I bought the triangle reissue when it came out and sent it back because of the bassiness- my strat bridge pickup sounded like a neck pickup.
