HP Umpire Adrian Johnson ejected Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo after umpires corrected an inadvertent foul mechanic by 1B Umpire Ryan Wills on a fair ball down the line. Report: www.closecalls...
With two out and the bases loaded in Florida, Miami batter Jazz Chisholm hit a line drive directly at the feet of 1B Umpire Wills, who maneuvered out of the way of the bounding ball and in one motion called the ball fair...except that in getting out of the way of the batted ball, Wills had spun around and mistakenly pointed FOUL, which resulted in both teams stopping play because they believed that the umpire had called a foul ball (and thus a dead ball) instead of a fair, live ball.
Upon Crew Consultation with Johnson, 2B Umpire Dan Bellino, and 3B Umpire John Libka, the umpires employed Official Baseball Rule 8.02(c) to rectify the situation: "If the umpires consult after a play and change a call that had been made, then they have the authority to take all steps that they may deem necessary, in their discretion, to eliminate the results and consequences of the earlier call that they are reversing, including placing runners where they think those runners would have been after the play, had the ultimate call been made as the initial call."
Lovullo was ejected after throwing his hat while arguing the decision: OBR 8.02(c) Comment prohibits coaches from arguing such reversed calls and/or crew consultation outcomes, while throwing uniform or equipment items in reaction/disgust of a call is an ejectable offense pursuant to MLB's Standards for Removal from the Game.
