A former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu; his wife Beatrice and their doctor have been convicted of organ trafficking, in the first verdict of its kind under the Modern Slavery Act.
Ekweremadu, 60; his wife, Beatrice, 56; and Dr Obinna Obeta, 51, were found guilty of facilitating the travel of a young man to Britain with a view to his exploitation after a six-week trial at the Old Bailey.
However, the lawmaker’s daughter, Sonia, was cleared by the court.
The jury said Ekweremadu, his wife and their doctor criminally conspired to bring the 21-year-old Lagos street trader to London to exploit him for his kidney.

Great news. Great outcome. Serves the Ekweremadus' right. They have been larger than life in Enugu politics since 1999. Has stolen enof money to built a hospital in Enugu but never did. Importantly also, this judgement is going to help Obi's case against Tinubu. The Nigeria law is deliberately not very clear on whether a Nigerian with prior criminal conviction outside Nigeria is eligible to contest political offices in Nigeria. Now that Obi threw in Tinubu's drug case in the US into his petition, this Ekweremadu's case makes the matter very real for the Election tribunal judges. If they say crimes committed outside Nigeria cannot stop a Nigerian from contesting political offices in Nigeria, that means they are approving situations where someone like Ekweremadu will come back to Nigeria after serving his prison term to contest for any political office, including the presidency, and possibly win. I don't see the judges going with that line of reasoning. This Ekweremadu's makes it clear that Tinubu is not qualified to contest for political offices in Nigeria and INEC shouldn't have allowed HIM to contest the presidency.

What is fascinating is that the judge had to read screeds of affidavits from senior Nigerians officials and politicians including the speaker of the house, state premiers, and an ex president - all stating what upright individuals the perpetrators are. As the judge said this was a form of slavery. Its part of the culture of Nigeria and explains why it was so easy to develop a slave trade to the extent it did. To those of you labelling the boy as wicked because he excercised his human right not to donate his God given body part. This is the fate of the other Nigerian who donated to the convicted Doctor Obinna Obeta. "As for the young Nigerian who was flown to London to provide a kidney for Dr Obeta, the BBC found him living in a small east London flat with condensation on the windows, still suffering from pain and weakness, the consequences of giving up a vital organ." Anyone siding with the Ekweremadu and blaming the victim, I pray none of your loved ones ever fall victim to evil rich selfish Nigerian politicans who are only out to use you for spare parts and disposable assets.

These news casters themselves even seem to be expecting some "diplomatic" treatment for the Ekweremadus. Wao. The rich draws their sympathy but the indegent Nigerian involved, whose organ was to be harvested, seems to be secondary in their consideration.
