Got my first Elan (1973) for my 4th birthday and have ridden it every winter for 21 years since. Made me the rider I am today. You really learn to ride on an Elan!
I like this video, shows the true nature of snowmobiling. Right now I am on the Eastern side of Saskatchewan on a nice trip. Boy is the powder ever deep. I have been riding my Skandic and a new 2000 Formula STX 583 over here. The best part is it just started snowing again last night, so the powder should be fresh and untouched. Thanks Louis, you are a inspiration to snowmobile lovers everywhere.
Haha I remember my old elan. I was going down a bumpy corn field and when I got home, turned it off, smelled gas, stepped off of it and in a matter of 3 seconds the whole thing went up in flames. Turned out that the gas cap came off and gas splashed everywhere. About a month later, I was back on it riding it again. Good times...
my first sled was a Yamaha Exciter . . . was originally a 440 but for some reason when i got it it was bored out to a 500. . . at 12 years old i loved being able to keep up with traffic on the highway.
Man, I get gotta get my old elan back out and running. Those things are so light and fun. Yeah my zr700 and phazer are fun, but the nostalgia of the old elans are great.
Nice video, you got to love when the kids are playing around in the snow with an old harmles sled. :) reminds me of when i whas younger:) Love all of your videos. BIG fan from Norway!
Yeah. I've been using Marine Stabil for mine. Some of my buddies told me that select stations have ethanol free 93 octane gas, but you kind of got to go out of your way to get there.
Hey thanks for those kind words, my mission is to get as many people on sleds as i can and to promote sledding in a huge way. We have some cool things coming up this winter!
How u said that, that Elan splashes gas out of it all the time. I have a '76 Elan Deluxe 250 Twin and mine use to do that but there is a vent in the gas tank at the top of the tank and it pours gas out of it. Put electrical tape or what ever around the vent and u will have gas in ur tank way longer! Shane
These kids that learn on old tippy sleds like the Elan I think will have a much better learning curve on how to use your body to gain control of the machine. I try to explain to my kids how much easier it is today with all the new technology on them. But I always come across like the old guy talking about yesteryear.. The old walking back and forth to school in 10 below, uphill both ways.
hey lou what kinda of gas tank is on your xlt? ive been looking to put this rmk seat but haven't have much luck in good quality pictures so ive resorted to making a mold of the bottom of the seat to make a structure to support the seat properly. you'd think polaris would have made the bottom of the seat much more rigid. anyways any info helps
Just wondering if you got that Polaris shift seat idea from me? Did that conversion 2 years ago in my ZX skidoo and there's various pics on the net of it.
Hey guys I have a question, I have a 95 arctic car zr580 and if I put half of the gas that Louie put down the cylinders mine will rev up like crazy and I have to keep flicking on and off the kill switch till it settles down, is this normal I am newer to sleds thanks!
I remeber the elans i had one and did water skipping with a friend and it went on the botton And my friend had a rmk and he was bored so he also sunk And in 1 day i wad back on riding
Hey Louie great vids keep up the good work. I do have one question, that I haven't seen in any of your other vids. What's your personal opinion on rear suspension limiter straps, where should they be placed, how tight should they be, or do you even need them?
Yes you need your straps! adjusting the strap cause more or less ski pressure. if you trail ride you usually want more ski pressure so you can turn, if you powder ride you usually want less ski pressure and more track pressure. To find the right spot you have to experiment.
Hi! I got a VK540 -2000. and never had to give it gas like that when its cold, is it high mileage on yours? and why dont you use the electric starter on it? //Daniel from sweden
