Elastica are one of those bands that I've appreciated more as time has gone on.. Their debut was fantastic and I curse myself that I didn't really appreciate it more at the time... It sounds timeless.
That's been me my whole life, I feel as if I always discover bands 10 years or more after their prime. Lately I've even been getting into music made long before I was even born, like 50s rock.
This has to be one of my FAVORITE Elastica songs!!! It was a GREAT song when it first came out and has aged well. This song and the ENTIRE album on which it appears is flawless. Btw, I always loved Justine's hair cut in this video. Thanks for the memories!!!
It is my favourite song of theirs, I think. What a great band, what an album. So glad that it finally is on Spotify. And: So many years later, I'm still mesmerized when I see the video. Her eyes, her haircut, the attitude, the vibe she sends.
The funny thing is that back then it was not even a great song. But by today's standards, it's a master piece. Some songs just take their sweet time maturing...
Then again, it strikes some people differently. Don't think I ever heard it before it came over the work tannoy today -- and I fell instantly. Taste is a funny thing, innit?
i really like this. I don't recall ever hearing it before and I listened to a lot music in those years, but I think it came out the year I was basically homeless and I missed a lot. Her voice really compliments the melancholy nature of the song
I'd work very hard but I'm lazy I can't take the pressure and it's starting to show In my heart you know how it pains me A life of leisure is no life you know Waking up and getting up has never been easy, Oh oh, I think you should know. Waking up and getting up has never been easy, Oh, oh, I think you should know. Oh, oh, I think you should go. Make a cup of tea, and put a record on. I'd work very hard but I'm lazy I've got a lot of songs but they're all in my head. I'll get a guitar and a lover who pays me If I can't be a star I won't get out of bed. Waking up and getting up has never been easy, Oh, oh, I think you should know. Waking up and getting up has never been easy, Oh, oh, I think you should know. Oh, oh, I think you should go. Make a cup of tea, and put a record on. Waking up and getting up has never been easy, Oh, oh, I think you should know. Waking up and getting up has never been easy, Oh, oh, I think you should know. Oh, oh, I think you should go. Make a cup of tea, and put a record on.
I'd work very hard, but I'm crazy Got a lot of ideas but they're all in my head I've got some marijuana and some compassion that's lazy, If I can't save the world I won't get out of bed.
I interviewed Hgh Cornwell years ago, and I asked him about this track, he said that he took it as a compliment/tribute that they'd copied his song. He received a phone call from his lawyers asking him if he was aware of the song and to not worry ebcause they'd "sorted everything" and he was paid royalties, even though he never asked for or wanted them. Sad.
Legally, maybe. Technically, every artist who is influenced by another artist steals indirectly via their own output. A cover by someone else is simply the highest form of showing appreciation for another artist's influence.
A friend told me that he thinks I sound like this band. I've never heard this band, but I'm actually really honored! This girl has a really great voice!
@103735952550804428024 sorry for being 7 months behind , but not only true she is a complete n utter thumper , a devout evangelist got her off the brown though , she was and perhaps is still is stunning
@notformebeaky Why the derogatory term ? Also, if it gets one off a terrible drug habit it's not sad. Perhaps it'll help preserve her life and who knows maybe elastica will perform in future yet. Once I was introduced to a man and next time I asked of him he'd died to do with heroin.
Was there ever a woman in the 90s who played guitar and looked as cool and hot as Justine? And yes there were quite a few but who come close but she was #1 IMHO.
Those saying this song wasn't that great at the time are talking Bollocks! This was a monster smash in the UK indie scene and broke through to the mainstream, it was always on the radio. Connection blew up much later, after it's initial release, due to it being used on film soundtracks and TV shows. I can't even make a cup of tea without my internal music box playing 'Waking up' in my head. Great, great album!
I was going to say...this sounds exactly like No More Heroes. Did Elastica just rework obvious melodic variations on classic songs into something different? Seems like all their big hits were basically ripoffs.
A woman who can sing (without autotune) and play guitar (instead of pushing touchscreens) yes please ... guess what ? Nowadays is a generation of (mostly) uninspired idiots !
Muchas gracias, Sylwia, para ti también. Me encanta Elastica!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
I just love this song and the band... The bass line is just classic. Thumpin drum beat. Its just the old fashioned wall of sound. And on a sexist note... Who is the elfin redhead on rhythm... Very cute and a great player.. Luvvem...
Moving and found my old collection of Brit pop. Oasis, Blur, Bush, Elastica, Republica. After Cobain blew his head off in 94 I really got into this music.
This band was amazing. A ton of pop hit type songs that are super catchy. I do keep seeing comments about band claiming this or that about similarities to their music. There's only so many chord progressions and how many years of recorded music... of course a progression is going to repeat but every band listed so far ... Idk other than that the songs have nothing in common. It's not like they straight sampled or something....
The band became subject to controversy when several bands sued them for plagiarism. Specifically, the post-punk band Wire (whom Elastica counted as one of their main influences) claimed that many of the band's melodies were taken from Wire compositions, as well as by The Stranglers. Notably, Wire's "I Am the Fly" has a chorus similar to Elastica's "Line Up" and the intro synthesizer part in Elastica's "Connection" (later also repeated on guitar) is lifted from the guitar riff in Wire's "Three Girl Rhumba" and transposed a semitone, and The Stranglers also passed comment that Elastica's "Waking Up" bore a marked resemblance to their song "No More Heroes". The disputes were resolved by out-of-court settlements.
The whole controversy was bullshit to be quite straightforward. Nirvana stole it from killing joke and killing joke stole it from the damned. Same applies here and besides, it's not who does it first that counts, it's who does it better!
@@mbrady2329 it's been two years since I've commented here lol...time flies... Anyways no, I stand by my claim. I do admit, Justine is very basic and bland, but there's no such thing as originality (if that is what you refer to as being a part of "talent"). Humans "rip off" ideas from one another and claim it their own. That doesn't make any of them "talented" or "creative". I respect your opinion regardless though!
@@IncredulousMisanthrope, Justine Frischmann diluted the songs she chose to plagiarise, as opposed to enriching popular music in any way; she was / is a talentless hack. I find it rather telling that Wire continue to gig and record new material, whilst la Frischmann left the music industry long ago. Personally, I don't tend to respect op-in-i-ons unless they're backed up with something more substantial, but I appreciate that the comments section of RU-vid is perhaps not the best format for that!
@@mbrady2329 well, personally I don't usually bring much more than opinions on a RU-vid comments thread lmao. Regardless, I'll bring in something factual. Guy Deutscher (2005) in his book "Unfolding of Language" noted that 'inventions' and originality is no such thing. We are merely a product of our environment, taking ideas from people and making it our own. We actually discover ideas and simply mix two/three things, and call it our own. For example, post punk bands like Wire were never "original". Rather they took things from previous bands, mixed it up and made it their own. So your claim that Wire still brings up "new stuff" is just objectively wrong, since their stuff is a copy of their environment with nothing original of their own. That's all.
Oh God now your depressing me. Saw this lot supporting Blue on their Modern Life is Rubbish tour at the Old Trout in Windsor. All for a fiver. Why can't life be like that again. Albarn was right, Modern Life is Rubbish.
Clem Fandango seeing them in that era must have been great though, that's their best album, and you saw elastica! I was born in 2002 and i didn't like blur in 2015 so i highly doubt I'll ever get to see them live :((
In pub based conversation, I've often had to choose one single 7 inch to distill that era in the UK. Fittingly, I've often cited this one above even other personal favourites like Pulp, Suede and what have you. Why you might ask? In answer, can't put my inner musical finger on it, not for lack of trying. But above all, like cross hairs homing in on some intangible target, if it doesn't hit bull's eye every time - it hits the next ring in line...very consistently. I can almost imagine Jo Wiley and Steve Lemac introducing it on their then Radio1 evening slot. If only they all aged as well as this offering, for its ability to take me back is quite uncanny!
@@mace4900 I think people said that about Elastica because they couldn't believe women could write good songs. Hopefully, things are a bit less sexist now.
@@deadbydayinblack Ha ha, well they do say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and if I remember right the Stranglers did make a few quid out of it too :D
The 90s were fcukin class! You had the Hip Hop, Dance and Rave Scene..even Pop was good. Also the Indy scene was fantastic..you had the obvious ones of course.. but also loads of gems like this too. 🙌🏼
I’m a Yank from across the pond . Most bands from the UK and Ozz got one shot here in the states. U.S. radio has always been pretty snobbish to foreign acts so we didn’t get exposed to more than a single. I’m having a wonderful time rediscovering bands like this and others which we never had much of an opportunity to hear (save MTV in the wee hours of the morning). A hood majority of music which I listen to now is either from an earlier decade and or outside of America. British pop, rock and folk like the Levellers and Oysterband.
i don't remember this song getting the airplay that stutter , connection and car song received, i do remember playing the debut cd in my firebird cd player over and over and liking almost every song. i admit i didn't notice just how good this song is at first.
