I agree this is a great song, but there are so many of them that pretend to be greatest song of all time , so its difficult..I simply enjoy all od them and dont think..
Brother, at 68, fit as all get out, am still rockin it! Never too late! Went back to school with Prof, who was PhD Julliard and learned how to sing. Killin it. Go for it!!
Every time I hear this I’m transported back to being 21 again, going clubbing with my 19 year old girlfriend!!! We’ve been married 30 years this year 😂
Same here. And I even was in the fortunate situation of being a tween in the Netherlands the early 80s. Booze? Pot? Sex? No problemo, kiddo, you go and have yourself a ball of a time. Seriously, all of that was legal for 12 year olds when I turned 12. No one batted an eye when I went into a pub, a (Dutch) coffeeshop, a porn shop. Yeehaw!
@@russell1371yeah, it's tragic the way life went for some of the band after this time. They should all have been able to retire and live till 105 on a beautiful island just for this track alone.
I’m from Sydney Australia grew up here 52 years , I must say I’ve heard millions of bands and songs on RU-vid but I keep coming back to this incredible band and song in particular, this is truly an amazing song of high proportions , I remember when it first came out and to this day still thinks it’s an incredible arrangement of vocals and musicianship of such a simple chord arrangement and style uniquely Charlatans blue print , well done 2023 greetings from Sydney Australia
Damn it was good to be a kid back then. SO much good music from Madchester (Charlatans, Mondays, Roses, Inspirals, Dragons, Turtles, etc), the Scousers (La's, Farm, etc), The shoe gazers (Ride, Swervedriver, Curve, Chapterhouse, etc). Then you had Bristol smashing it (Massive Attack, Tricky, Portishead, etc). It was the heyday of Hip-Hop too & even dance music used to be good back then!! Who can forget Castlemorton? The 90's really were the modern 60's! Some of the best times of my life with so many anthems to transport me back in time, & I've not even mentioned Primal Scream!!!!
kids now are the blank generation fed on a diet of mobile phones, computer games and facebook and haven't the suss to start bands, government have them where they want them
I was 18 when this came out. The whole Manchester music scene and dance music culture (that kind of went along with it) were so revolutionary at the time. Most young people were still driving around in their Ford Capri's, fighting getting drunk and blasting soft rock. People on my estate mainly had mullets and tight jeans. Looking like these guys was brave, even in Manchester. I remember going into a pub in baggy jeans, a flowery shirt and a shoulder length bell cut (like the keyboard player out of Inspiral Carpets) - I thought I was going to be killed.
I'm in Australia, was 20 at the time, had already been a huge New Order fan so was keen on the Madchester scene having discovered the Mondays in 91 although the Charlatans not until a couple of years later. Amazing to hear a story from the middle of it from someone who lived there and lived it
This song reminds me of the summer of 1990. Still the best summer I’ve ever experienced I think. Hot weather from May until September, great music, great times.
I remember it like it was yesterday, I was working away from home living the dream. Unfortunately it was nearly 34 years ago, but memories are forever.
Yank here. Married an Mc'r lass in 90, and had my bachelor party at the Hacienda. The city was the center of the music universe at that time, and the Hacienda was its epicenter. Had twenty plus American friends with us, and to a person they each describe their week at the M'cr clubs as one of their life's great moments. Music has never sounded better...
Oh yeah....well i was 21 qnd cut. La Class ss to go try and catch dome Carp.......i wasny 3ven on drugd....jever caught no carp......but i played ghis ws 9ng over anx over
As a French I have to admit that the brits have the best musicians, so much creativity and unmatched, peerless, unparalleled... I don't have enough adjectives to describe how I love your music in general, this song is amazing. Thank you.
As an American, I have to agree. The amount of great music that has come out of the UK is mind boggling! I don't know why the Brits are so great musically, but they are. Thank you.
Only remembered the Charlatans after I heard The Sunday's on RNZ the other day! Brought a whole musical memory time back to me. Amazing time to be alive!
+Mrs Woods A new psychedelic music scene is on its way back. People are sick of manufactured nonsense. Check out some indie bands, man. Keep it real. Peace.
What can I say, probably my favorite song of all time. I remember when I first heard this song early August 1990 and I thought at first it was a cover of Deep Purple's "Hush" because their intros sound very similar to each other and I rushed to the record store the very next day and bought the CD single import w/the 3 bonus songs. The sound totally transcended my mind and have been hooked on it still, It is the key to my universe.
Coming from TX. God so many amazing bands in the 90’s from the UK. My people from across the pond, and the world. Thank you and bless you for decades of great music, starting with of course the Beatles, the Who and Stones way back in the 60’s
A fantastic time in the 90s UK , especially Manchester ( Madchester at the time) I spent a lot of time at the boardwalk club in deansgate , Seen all the up and coming bands ,, The boardwalk club is worth a Google if the uk 90s scene is your thing
The only one I know, has come to take me away The only one I know, is mine when she stitches me The only one I see, has found an aching in me The only one I see, has turned her tongue into me Everyone has been burned before Everybody knows the pain The only one I know, never cries, never opens her eyes The only one I know, wide awake and then she's away The only one I see, is mine when she walks down the street The only one I see, has carved her way into me Everyone has been burned before Everybody knows the pain Everyone has been burned before Everybody knows the pain Everyone has been burned before Everybody knows the pain Everyone has been burned before Everybody knows the pain
This was on my college jukebox when I was 16 😊 My eldest son is now 20 and won't listen to today's stuff...I say 'we got Charlatans, you get Stormzy' - he's like 'I know mother, you had me too late!' Got in his truck the other day to find him playing PWEI - priceless! He's making memories to the same stuff I did 💗
Can't do rap music... It's just not for me... Fair play to everyone on their music taste.. I just can't listen to it... Gimme the Manchester scene any day
+danny roberts omg !! that film is brilliant such a under rated film that is brilliant. I remember watching that film back when I was 9 hearing this song.
I asked for this to be played so many times at the pub music nights that, eventually the DJ used to play it as soon as I walked through the door. Happy days. 👍🏼😎

All you guys longing for the 90's, I feel your pain. But when I hear this, it sounds very much like the 60's music I grew up on and love so much. Someone pointed out the similarities to Deep Purple - Hush. That's exactly right. That keyboard sound, that's pure 60's. More of a basic, stripped down sound. Then the 70's happened, and everything got blow dry polished (Eagles, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Styx, etc) But, thankfully the 90's rediscovered the 60's. and rescued us from that corporate garbage.
I think there will be an revival of 90s indie rock becoming mainstream in the next few years, I’m 15 we’re all sick of rap music with shite lyrics glorifying gang culture.
Actually, punk is what happened . . . which faded into all the post-punk acts of the late 70s, which bled into the New Wave of the 80s, which puts us right back here. Sure, there's a clear and heavy 60s, psychedelia influence here, but it's been rinsed thoroughly in punk's dirty water.
It makes me wanna cry to hear amazing 90s music like this. The Charaltans along with Saint Etienne, Stone Roses and Inspiral Carpets just really make me feel happy. I'm just some kid stuck in a generation full of awful music, style, and people. I wish I could've lived in the UK during these amazing times. This music is my happy place when I'm surrounded by absolute trash.
Ésta canción cumple 30 años en éste 2020... es increíble como vuela el tiempo. Si tuviera que elegir una canción para describir un año, elegiría ésta canción para 1990. Refleja a la perfección el espíritu de aquella época.
I used to put this song on repeat and listen to over and over and over really loud! I made all my friends listen to it also, only some of them were able to appreciate it.
I've been following the Charlatans since their debut, just got into broadcast and was already sick of the grunge when this one hit. The late Jon Brooks hit it out of the park with his drums and Rob Collins hammered that Hammond B3 like it was free. I recently retired from broadcast and signed off with Only One I know. I can't think of one "bad" Charlatans tune despite the untimely loss of Collins and Brooks. Every time I play this album I'm back to my 20's with all my hair!
I feel blessed to have this music as a backdrop to my teens life... what a blessing. teenage life... a right of passage and this song/album defines it. BEAUTIFUL. How many times this song played in a University Student dorm? Geezus.. EPIC
I remember the bouncing dancefloor in Manchester Ritz on alternative Monday night vibrating like a bastard when that deafening bass guitar solo break comes in. Just when you think it ain't gonna get any better the drums kick in and then that guitar solo take the atmosphere through the roof!!!
Tx to The Charlatans for this masterpiece 👍👌!!!
Wow…. It’s 1989 again; I’m back on campus of Venice High School; short surf trips to the beach; skating on the board walk and listening to KROQ radio in my car; driving along with my friends… I miss my friends.
For a college student, I was in the absolute PERFECT time of my life. Music like this was exploding everywhere. Dance music, Trance, House, Indie, Movie soundtracks to awesome movies... the 90's were the best time in recorded history to be alive - well, as far as music goes :)
Belting tune, timeless! Takes me back to the Kickers/flares days, baggy Chipie t shirt, long floppy hair, awaydays at football then a rave after, unless we'd been nicked at Liverpool for not being from there by some jobsworth twunt who probably encouraged his kids to sign on. Happy days, you had to live it to love it.
This is The Charlatans I love. I never got into their later music; it never sounded like this kicky, cool tune. It's a wanna feel good song that I listen to over and over every morning getting ready for work.
I was born in London 1971, Gen X fkkn killed it, Hip-Hop, break dance, graffiti, bmx ,video games, skate board your fkkn welcome , Nothing exists now that we didn't start
God, I miss 90's England. Listening to tunes like this as a teenager. Summers that never ended, playing out until 11:30 at night and the sun still not fully set, water fights, flirting with girls. Felt like a different world, care free and able to say whatever the hell you wanted to say.
Same here, but my experience was initially with the music of Morrissey, The Smiths, The Cure and New Order in the 80's when I was a teen and the Madchester scene in the time you describe when I was 21 and in University! We would go to a place called "The Alaskan" (Think The Hacienda in Manchester, but place it in Mexico on the border with Texas!) and dance the night away! Here in the U.S> they played pop crap, but in the club scene 5 miles south of us, we could dance the night away and celebrate the New Wave, Alt, Madchester, Acid House, Industrial scene, etc... Just as if we were in Europe! xD
I agree with you, except for your bullshit about not being able to say what you want. Stop reading the fucking Daily Mail. Teenagers still do all that shit now.
Still sounds amazing every time! Tim you are a legend for the people. A top man who gives back. 🙌🙌❤️❤️❤️ Followed The Charlatans from their inception as a late teenager. 👍😍😍
