In Mesa, AZ, a corporation bought out a bunch of low income apartments filled with seniors and the disabled. Sent notices to every resident terminating their leases if they didn’t come up with a $500+ rental increase. On top of that, they announced they no longer will participate in any housing assistance plans. A 92-year old resident was on the news. He was shopping for a tent because he couldn’t afford to live in the apartment he’d been renting for more than 25 years. The richest country in the world that refuses to take care of its most needy citizens is no country worth living in.
@KendraBardot
@KendraBardot Год назад
I live in mesa as well and 3 years ago I was making $22 per hour working 50 hrs average a week, I barely qualified for a 1 bedroom apartment by myself by $33. Part of the issue and I am not being insensitive, is that the way the economy is is partly on them as well. Wages have been awfully slow to increase while inflation has been taking off for around 40 years. I think it's awful what's happening to them, but I also don't have too much sympathy when my entire life I have found it hard to get by even with a decent job and being financially smart. They at least had the option to purchase a home and reap the benefits of inflation.
@azcookin3177
@azcookin3177 Год назад
@@KendraBardot Many were in their 80’s and 90’s, with any assets long since used up to cover medical bills and inflation. Their retirement accounts on average had around $100,000 or less 20-30 years ago. Many are widowed and lost half their social security income when their spouse died. Others are disabled and have been their entire adult lives. Not everyone from the related time period made more than minimum wage when they were working. They never made enough to buy a home. How about the 3 mobile home parks that are evicting every resident so new developments can be built on the land? They have until May 31st to be out. They own their mobile home, but rent the land it’s parked on. Now there’s no land they can move to that they can afford to buy, no park with space available, and if they did find space, the cost to move their mobile home is well over $10,000 if it can be moved at all. So no, not everyone back then had the options you believe they did.

which is the same problem here, in Australia for several reasons (houses are far too expensive for 1 and they hand them down to family, or sit empty till they die then divided up) and the elderly hang onto their houses instead of putting them back into housing stock, therefore there is no housing stock, therefore one of the main reasons houses, BASIC houses are now out of reach for young up to around 40/45+ years of age. I'm 46. houses where definitely out of reach for someone like me around 20+ years ago, and its only a hundred times worse now. and with all that I would still tell my elderly parents, unless they can get a very nice smaller home (ours is actually tiny 10×11?, but on 5 acres) that will support them financially for the next 20 years, to stay in their home too!! (but I'd still choose Australia set up over usa anyday)

@@undrwatropium3724 a lot of people who do this sell all of their possessions and only bring 1-2 suitcases with the necessities. A lot of overseas apartments are available fully furnished and there are many countries with a good quality of living that have much lesser cost of living and you can live comfortably for $1500-$2000 a month for everything (rent, utilities, food, etc..). It is easier for retirees because some countries have specific retiree visas, but there are ways for younger folks to do it too like TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) and every country has different requirements to be eligible. I grew up poor and now I’m middle class (no where near rich, but comfortable (mainly b/c I chose not to have kids)). I truly believe that anyone can do this, but it is definitely easier for some than it is for others and some countries aren’t options for lower income individuals. It’s all about research, planning and compromise if it is something you really want to aim for.

I have talked to elderly people who live in fernmoor homes properties in NJ who are in this exact position. One couple is moving in with their children for a while to try to save some money back up. The property manager claimed they had to raise rent due to people not paying rent during the pandemic, it wasn't enough people to actually justify the increase, and they, of course, have kept the prices high. It is absolutely price gouging and absolutely should be illegal. We should have a legal limit to profit margin on necessities like housing.

Ain't that a laugh! Such hypocrites, many 'christians' now spout a 'prosperity gospel' although Jesus "had no place to lay His head".

No. Inflation caused by a combination of mergers, GOP's deregulations, and Trump's poor COVID response. Try actually pulling up a study proving your point -- wait, you can't.

@@Pepestock It's not just that the minority-rule, right-wing, MAGAt fascist traitors against America's majority-rule democracy are uneducated, gorging themselves on their pin-headed, bumper-sticker philosophy and world-view, it is that they are willfully ignorant and ineducable (abjectly stupid). Capitalism has killed more than twice as many humans as has "communism". Capitalism was created in the 16th century. Socialism in the 20th century, Communism a half-century after that. Here's the historical facts: Socialist countries do not go on profit wars. They give everyone food, housing, healthcare jobs, etc… and they do not exploit other countries. They do not engage in neoliberal rape, pillage, plunder and enslavement of the rest of the world's natural resources. Capitalism on the other hand: 100,000,000: Extermination of native Americans (1492-1890) 15,000,000: Atlantic slave trade (1500-1870) 150,000: French repression of Haiti slave revolt (1792-1803) 300,000: French conquest of Algeria (1830-1847) 50,000: Opium Wars (1839-1842 & 1856-1860) 1,000,000: Irish Potato Famine (1845-1849) 100,000: British supression of the Sepoy Mutiny (1857-1858) 20,000: Paris Commune Massacre (1871) 29,000,000: Famine in British Colonized India (1876-1879 & 1897-1902) 3,445: Black people lynched in the US (1882-1964) 10,000,000: Belgian Congo Atrocities: (1885-1908) 250,000: US conquest of the Philipines (1898-1913) 28,000: British concentration camps in South Africa (1899-1902) 800,000: French exploitation of Equitorial Africans (1900-1940) 65,000: German genocide of the Herero and Namaqua (1904-1907) 10,000,000: First World War (1914-1918) 100,000: White army pogroms against Jews (1917-1920) 600,000: Fascist Italian conquest in Africa (1922-1943) 10,000,000: Japanese Imperialism in East Asia (1931-1945) 200,000: White Terror in Spain (1936-1945) 25,000,000: Nazi oppression in Europe: (1938-1945) 30,000: Kuomintang Massacre in Taiwan (1947) 80,000: French suppression of Madagascar revolt (1947) 30,000: Israeli colonization of Palastine (1948-present) 100,000: South Korean Massacres (1948-1950) 50,000: British suppression of the Mau-Mau revolt (1952-1960) 16,000: Shah of Iran regime (1953-1979) 1,000,000: Algerian war of independence (1954-1962) 200,000: Juntas in Guatemala (1954-1962) 50,000: Papa & Baby Doc regimes in Haiti (1957-1971) 3,000,000: Vietnamese killed by US military (1963-1975) 1,000,000: Indonesian mass killings (1965-1966) 1,000,000: Biafran War (1967-1970) 400: Tlatelolco massacre (1968) 700,000: US bombing of Laos & Cambodia (1967-1973) 50,000: Somoza regime in Nicaragua (1972-1979) 3,200: Pinochet regime in Chile: (1973-1990) 1,500,000: Angola Civil War (1974-1992) 200,000: East Timor massacre (1975-1998) 1,000,000: Mozambique Civil War (1975-1990) 30,000: US-backed state terrorism in Argentina (1975-1990) 70,000: El Salvador military dictatorships (1977-1991) 30,000: Contra proxy war in Nicaragua: (1979-1990) 16,000: Bhopal Carbide disaster (1984) 3,000: US invasion of Panama (1989) 1,000,000: US embargo on Iraq (1991-2003) 400,000: Mujahideen faction conflict in Afghanistan (1992-1996) 200,000: Destruction of Yugoslavia (1992-1995) 6,000,000: Congolese Civil War (1997-2008) 30,000: NATO occupation of Afghanistan (2001-present) -222,500,000+ Deaths This is only in terms of events. Think of how many die from preventable causes: Think of how many have died and will continue to die because of their lack of access to the money the monied minority hoards. Hoarding is a mental-health issue. Including the hoarding of money. Even Jesus pointed this out, but today's right-wing christo-fascists HATE that Jesus! He was the original socialist. The originator of the social contract. Corrupt crony capitalism and its criminal corporatocracy are now in their end stages because of the enormous leaps forward in advanced technologies which will completely end the entire concept of money (and its co-concomitant waste) by the end of this century and ultimately free humanity from the prison of money and the slavery of the plutocratic oligarchy's fascist corporatocracy. And at the end of the day, economic systems are not governments. Capitalism and democracy are two different things, just as socialism and dictatorships are two different things. The problems occur with the cults of personality, which is a patriarchal, chattel-mentality thing. So, your little bumper-sticker reductio ad absurdum rant is not only pointless, but extremely time-limited. Conservatism is already dead and doesn't even know it yet. There's this pesky little thing called the 22nd century and beyond just around the corner. There are those of US all about the future and then there that mindless, loudmouthed minority that is trapped in the past with their ancient, mythological fairy tales reinforcing their emotional infantilism masquerading as adulthood.

@@KKMcK1 You know if the government kills people, that that isn't capitalism, right? As in you know the definition of capitalism doesn't involve the state? You are not very well educated at all, but you think you are. You need to brush up on what capitalism actually means. Also, turn off the news and go outside. I am worried for your mental health.
