Digging deeper into the removal of the controller, untangling the wiring and confirming the culprit of the fault is a Mosfet.
Also, while you have the controller exposed, check for bulges in the electrolytic capacitors. These are cheap to replace.
While I wait for the new components to arrive (and a new pair of controllers as backup) I'm going to plug in a high power Bluetooth programmable controller that I bought from eBay with high quality Toshiba Mosfets for some fun! It might be also prove to be a long term fix.
