Thanks for this. It’s something I’ve been wanting to work out for my household. My wife and I have just popped our little one in her own room and I’ve found that the oil heaters are the safest. But I was curious on the cost. We have a gas radiator in the lounge room and a split system which guzzle all the energy and shoot my bills up 50-60%. So knowing this is great. Cheers.

Interesting experiment. But I’m guessing your A/c would be heating the whole second floor as apposed just 3 rooms, hence the increase in consumption. Generally A/c is the most energy efficient form of heating per square meter, unless the ambient temperature is below 5c then the efficiency starts to drop off.
@LudicrousFeed
@LudicrousFeed 6 лет назад
Craig I too was of the opinion that my reverse cycle AC was more efficient before my experiment. But I think you’re right, the AC covers the whole second storey so probably more efficient per sq m as you stated. But I guess the column heaters are better if you want to discretely heat each room only.

Hey Tom, there appears to be a few things missing... : 1. Which brand of column oil heaters are you using? 2. What wattage are they ? 1500 / 2000 etc 3. what brand of reverse cycle air con do you have and what wattage is that? 4. You mention 3 heaters then show the figures, then you do the same for aircon BUT, then you tell us it heated 5 rooms, so it begs the question, how accurate is the data your supplying? Please note, I am not saying ur dead wrong here, merely pointing out, that theres room for interpretation with what you have clearly stated in ur vid... I was thinking u might have stuck a power meter on each outlet and measured it that way... On a personal note: how have you fared with the temps that we have had to put up with recently and has the elec prices been Hiked to the fashion of a rodeo bull in ur area like it has in mine? Finally if you have updated reviews with a tad more detail then here shoot me a link please. Thanks

Sydney's weather is warm and 8 degrees overnight is mild It's been -1 degrees here in Victoria this week and I still don't run a heater at night and only ever did for my kids under 18months old, just toughen up a bit and you will save even more money.

Are we missing the other magic number? What temperature did you set these heaters to and what temperature did you achieve?
@LudicrousFeed
@LudicrousFeed 6 лет назад
Kelvyn Bettridge That is an excellent question. My columns have a numerical variable setting from 1-6. We set it to ‘4’ which from experience warms the rooms to 17/18 deg C depending on which side of the house. As for the ducted AC, for the rare occasions that we use it, we set it to 22 C, but it only ever reaches 18 deg in the rooms.

U should try electric blankets. 100w max per person especially if ur only heating for sleeping. And on high 100w its too hot.

Interesting tests. I'm curious, 1. Did you directly record the room temperatures for each night over time ? If you didn't it will be hard to come to any conclusions. 2. Also did you leave all the bedroom doors open in RCAC mode to provide an easy air return path ? 3. In the oil heater mode were all the doors closed ? 4.Is the hallway that was heated in RCAC mode sealed or open to other parts of the house that were not part of the test? Thankyou.
@LudicrousFeed
@LudicrousFeed 3 года назад
Thanks Brett, temps not recorded Doors shut in RCAC both scenarios Hallway open to other parts of the house
@brettogden6104
@brettogden6104 3 года назад
@@LudicrousFeed Ah I see . If there was no easy return path for the RCAC air it would have been pumping your warm air out of any gaps it could find in windows, ceilings etc. And the air intake would be sucking air from downstairs and eventually from outside to balance the pressure. So I'd be very surprised if the RCAC didn't use more power to be honest. If the temperatures weren't monitored we could be comparing apples and oranges. So in conclusion there can't be any conclusions I'm afraid 😃

Good information, actually the opposite of what I expected. But - why do you need your heaters on all night? We just have thick feather doonas and electric blankets (just to pre-warm the bed), no need for any room heating. We even open the window a crack to keep it from getting too stuffy.
@LudicrousFeed
@LudicrousFeed 6 лет назад
Sean Wright Thanks for the comment. We only have the heaters on all night for 4-5 weeks of the year, namely June/July. Otherwise we just run the timers for the heaters to come on when we sleep and when we wake up. I agree with you though, a thick blanket is a much more cost-effective option! Thanks for watching :)

cool experiment! can the ac vents be closed to control for the number and size of the extra rooms?
@LudicrousFeed
@LudicrousFeed 6 лет назад
Sebastian Q Thanks! My AC doesn’t allow for the individual vents to be closed although I’m sure some systems could allow for this. Or you could zone your house more discretely to only heat/cool particular rooms. Thanks for watching!

Mmm interesting. I guess localised inefficient heat is better than whole house efficient heat. There are a number of factors that come into play here though including insulation and brand and type of reverse cycle aircon aswell as how it's plumbed etc. Also makes a large difference here in Tassie where aircons are on a cheaper tarrif 16c vs 28c. Everyone's mileage will vary drastically obviously.
@LudicrousFeed
@LudicrousFeed 6 лет назад
Gavin Turner Thanks for your comment. I agree, this experiment was only applicable for my particular setup and of course, efficiency will vary amongst different brands of reverse cycle AC. Given it’s a crossover experiment, some variables could be controlled eg. Insulation. I just learned something new from you, I didn’t realise AC is on a different tariff in Tas - certainly would make those long winter nights cosier for you down there! Thanks for watching :)

@@LudicrousFeed "controllable gates" could be added to the ductwork (or the outlets) - if that would be desirable - -same idea as with peoples ducted shop vac systems... ?? NB. This test is minimally scientific. For "Equvalent energy" the AC should be a lot more efficient - unless the duct work is loosing a huge amount of energy into the ceiling space.

In long run of to heat the room. The Ac break down earlier than the colum heater.

What about 3 noirot panel heaters v single 5kw 3.5 star rated split inverter ? In a open living granny flat with 2 bedrooms . Area is 12mtr x 5mtr . Would like your thoughts
@LudicrousFeed
@LudicrousFeed 4 года назад
Thanks for the question. I haven’t had much experience with panel heaters to be honest but split systems are generally considered to be quite efficient from what I’ve seen.

Thanks for testing. I have lots of questions if you are interesting in doing a followup. I found that for me it is better to turn the aircon on between 7-8pm whilst we have showers/get changed. Then let the house slowly cool and turn on again from 7-8am when we get up and get changed again. I found that sometimes we accidentally left a heater on all day and this negated any savings and only using Aircon for 2 hours is much cheaper. In the coldest nights I would like to turn on low to keep the house above say 17DegC. Did you measure the temp in the bedrooms? I found it hard to keep a good temp with bar heater and sometimes would turn it off as I couldn't get back to sleep if I was too hot. I like having the whole house heated a little so that when we get up it is not such a shock. The kids get less runny noses this way too as they tend not to want to put on clothes, which is fine when they are active but they start to stifle when they sit to eat or do homework.
@LudicrousFeed
@LudicrousFeed 6 лет назад
Stuart Baillie Thanks for your comment and for sharing your situation. I agree with you that background heating does help keep the kids healthy. I actually do have separate thermometers in our bedrooms. Without heating it can drop to 13/14 deg C depending which side of the house and with heating, it reaches 17 deg C. I don’t seem to have an issue with the column heaters getting too hot - ours are Delonghi and have a variable setting with a pretty good thermostat. Thanks for watching :)

This appears to be a seriously flawed experiment .. The test should be done with a temperature measurement device for measurement of the room temperature to be fair to both devices being tested. This part is not evident from the experiment done .. Say set to 24 degrees room temperature . Then let them turn on and off to reach and maintain that temperature .. do they both reach the temperature in equal time ? Or did one of them take longer ? Did you need more heaters to achieve the temperature and so on .. Regards.

I'm sorry but I think you and your household are too indulgent, if we all heated our bedrooms overnight we would need twice as many coal fired power stations. Have you tried investing in a pile of blankets, I'm sure it would save you a pile of money in heating and not to mention how it would help the environment. Other options are electric blankets or the old fashion Hot Water Bottle, don't laugh now! many of us found them comforting snuggling into one. Just a final note, I'm sure your ducted RC heating is connected to 3 phase, that itself would have told you it was going to be more costly.
