www.garyclinton.com || A head to head between the new model of the Electro-Harmonix Micro Synth and the 90s era model. Should you go for the new one?
Firstly I directly compare the voices of the two pedals and then attempt to emulate a sweep setting on the 90s model with the newer version.
For this comparison I applied no EQ in the audio processing stage.
For more detail on how the Micro Synth works and how to use it check out my other video on this great pedal on The Guitar & Music Institute: rb.gy/c0b0d4

Yeah, I think the older one sounded better; the tracking was bit more even and the last sweep on the last note wasn't so abrupt. Newer isn't always better, but an interesting comparison, in any event. Well done.

Nice vid, I like the more extreme treble/attack on the newer one but all else seems better on the older.

Yes they are two different beasts in many ways. I bet if your first experience of the Microsynth was the XO (new one) and you had some settings you liked, going to the older one may not seem as good. In many ways, it's a question of personal taste.

Thanks for doing this! Personal take was that the 90's model is great for recording but the reissue is the one for live
@Garyclintoncomposer
@Garyclintoncomposer 4 года назад
The 90s model is def noiser and the smaller size of XO plus the 9v voltage does lend itself to live.

Yeah, that sweep was the one thing that made me like the older one more. The new one's sweep is close but it sounds kind of silly through most settings.

I definitely prefer how the speed of the sweep behaves on the older one. Maybe I'm just more used to that and if I bought the new one first, I'd prefer that 😃

Cool video. Yeah, the new one sounds kind of crappy, if I'm being frank. I wonder if its the headroom being squished to 9v from 24v? That's how I feel about the 90's DMM vs. newer ones, I don't think it's as picky as the internal components as much as it is just not having as much room to breathe. (?) Anyway, dig the riffs and your use of the synth.
@Garyclintoncomposer
@Garyclintoncomposer 2 года назад
Yeah I agree RE room to breathe on the older one. It's definitely more 'toppy' and perhaps that just makes it all seem more compressed and clinical rather than feeling a bit warmer like the older one. Glad you liked the video and if you liked the riff here is the song I used it in. I used the 90s one but I did have EQ and compression in the chain too ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QGKXmdFXwAA.html

@Garyclintoncomposer

The envelope - a huge difference. The voices themselves, not massive, but different. The smaller size and 12v power definitely a plus.

I have XO and there is gate effect, sudden cut off the signal / sound, very much lacking sustain. I tried with compressor in front of it, it helps a little, but still there is cut off. The only thing I didn't tried is to change the guitar, as mine is single coils and use better cables. Any advice?
@Garyclintoncomposer
@Garyclintoncomposer 3 года назад
Have you tried experimenting with 'trigger'? The Microsynth needs a certain threshold to trigger the voices. They are either on or off so if the input level too low it will cut off. Also try using neck pickup. And try using humbuckers for higher level. Lastly you can tweak the input level if you open it up although the factory settings are meant to be set for single coil. Not sure that's the issue though...
@fearatkovic3614
@fearatkovic3614 3 года назад
@@Garyclintoncomposer thank you. I tried to adjust the trigger a little, but I will try to play with trigger more and with the humbuckers.

I recently bought the vintage. I notice that it muffles my clean signal a little just by being in my chain, even when I’m not hitting it. It makes me really sad because when it’s on it’s awesome, especially when I use it as an octave fuzz stacked with my super lead channel. But I just can’t justify having it in my rig when I only use it 5% of the time and my main sound is compromised because of it. Even if it’s the only pedal in my setup! Does anyone else have this issue with the vintage? And does the newer version have this problem too? Does the newer version have true bypass?

Hi - I have an original version of this guy but I'm a little confused about the power supply. I've never really had a great use for the pedal so was looking to sell it, but on testing, discovered it's generating a lot of hiss in the background. I don't remember this being an issue when I purchased it and research has me wondering if I'm using the wrong supply. I'm pretty certain it's the one that came with it but having fried pedals in the past I'm now not so sure! As you have one can you tell me what your supply is? I have an EH: MKD-240100uk which sounds about right?
@Garyclintoncomposer
@Garyclintoncomposer 4 года назад
Yes that's the same one as I have for it. It's 24V the old one which is kind of annoying. The new one is 9V so it can be more easily powered by strandard power bricks. I've had mine for easily 15 years and I've never noticed any hiss from it at all. It's definitely not the power supply you are using. Are you running through any other pedals? Or is it just into this and then your amp? Make sure to test your lead directly into the amp from guitar to check the hiss isn't something else...

This is the problem with any new analog pedal that is/has a filter. The new filters are just nowhere near as good as the ones from the 70's, or in this case the 90's reissue. It's why even the new Mu-Tron reissues, even though they're designed by and who's build is overseen by the same guy who designed and build the original Mu-Trons just don't "cutnthe mustard." The filters just aren't as good. The last truly _great_ analog filters in pedal form were on the Moogerfoogers from the 2000's. What makes the situation even shitter in regard to older EHX pedals - they sound _fantastic_ but eventually the parts go bad and they're difficultto find someonewhocan repair them. Especially in the Microsynths. If you can get one, a company call _Iron Ether_ made a pretty awesome filter called the _Xerograph Deluxe_ that rivals the _Moogerfooger Low Pass Filter_ pedal. You can also contr the filter with an expression pedal and it has a small form factor.
@Garyclintoncomposer
@Garyclintoncomposer Год назад
Thanks for this I have always fancied a moogerfooger and never got round to picking one up so will check out the Xerograph. And yes I agree on the older filters. Always seems to come down to old adage - the vintage gear is the best.

I just sold my non-functioning 1980's in 2 minutes on Reverb last night for the price of a new one. But watching this I think I'll pass. The tracking on the new one is wonk! I'll wait for a "braaam" pedal...
@LuMagazine
@LuMagazine Год назад
Went ahead and bought the newer version anyway. It's a lot touchier, but also a lot grittier. I noticed you had to strike the high notes a lot harder and precisely to track properly. But the overall sound is a lot richer than I remember with this one... so yeah, give and take with each...

@@Garyclintoncomposer I owned and played the old one for decades, but sold it because EHX wouldn't fix it! I did buy the new one. It's not as smooth, but it packs more punch. I still want EHX to make a "braaam" pedal.
@Garyclintoncomposer
@Garyclintoncomposer Год назад
@@LuMagazine Ha that would be a pretty cool pedal. Although I think a Pearl Octaver, a sample of an elephant trumpet, along with some inventive use of the nearest synth, may be even better...
@LuMagazine
@LuMagazine Год назад
@@Garyclintoncomposer All octavers sound tinky to me. Like White Stripes. So I use both the EHX & TC Electronic harmonizers for a thick sound. Also the Boss SY-1 synth ain't bad either. That's the thing, I have great braaam files, but they can only be played by keyboards with GarageBand for example. That's what all the musicians who score video games do. Won't work with guitar. I don't want a huge midi modeling set up. I just want a good pedal! Is that so much to ask? I've written half a dozen pedal companies. Nobody gets it! Hans Zimmer should brand one!
