Carnivore for 15 months and 63 years old. My digestive system hates Mg supplements. I have made a cream with magnesium oil, home-rendered tallow from bone broth, a bit of shea butter and a few drops of lavender or orange essential oil. Easy to make and fabulous texture. I apply this before bedtime and after showering in the morning. During the day, I pour a little salt in my palm and suck it like candy because I don’t like the salt water taste. Follow with a glass of water. No more palpitations or cramps! No more ER visits. Most doctors will NEVER talk about electrolytes. They immediately bring out the big guns with prescriptions, EKG, echocardiograms, halter monitor, etc. The solution might be SO much simpler!
Your comment is very interesting. I am 6 months on carnivore and have constant leg cramps sometimes getting side of a torso cramps as well. I mix my own electrolytes but do not enjoy them. I drink 1 portion at noon and 1 before bed. If I skip one the cramps come back that night. If I drink those two portions my legs don't cramp but my bladder doesn't like it. Not sure what to do.
Oh my god you have no idea how you saved me i felt so tired, I'm a carnivore and i do 3-4 hours of cardio everyday and 2 hours of heavy weight lifting and this what i needed to not be tired anymore.
BEST layspeak explanation about the need for electrolytes, their function in the body, deficiency symptoms and some food sources. Thank you. Seriously great info Kait
I developed heavy cravings starting day 8, added more salt and potassium and instantly felt better and cravings went away. Thanks for the quality content, it really helps!
Very helpful video. Thanks. You should probably cover this at least once a year for all the new people switching to the carnivore diet. I have problems with bad muscle cramps but only if I don't take enough salt. It's not enjoyable to just dump salt in water and drink it but that's what I need to do on the carnivore diet to avoid cramps. I also supplement with minerals in water (Lyteshow). If I didn't have severe arthritis, I would be exercising at least 3 times harder and would need way more salt. Paul Saladino has decided to take some honey a couple times a week to reduce the need for salt and minerals. Very interesting.
I'm a firm believer in not taking supplements unless you absolutely know you need to, like from a lab test that shows a deficiency. Many people tend to overthink the keto and carnivore diet. Also, many people may not know that salt and potassium affect each other. If you eat a lot of salt, you need less potassium, if you eat more potassium you can get by with a little less salt. The one important thing is to salt all your food. I've been doing carnivore now for about a year, I take no supplements at all. I salt all my food and that's it. I feel good...:)
@@aidanbrooks6626 I consume about 5000mg of sodium a day which is about 2.5 teaspoons of salt. Most of that simply goes into the food I eat which is primarily meat. Based on my personal research and the books I've read, you really can not eat too much salt. Your body will expel any excess. You have to find whatever works for you and stick with it. If you feel good, you might be already eating enough salt. I also sometimes eat some redman rock salt when I feel like it. I enjoy the taste of salt and it will also help with hunger when you need it. Good luck on your journey.
@@james777ko2 thanks James, really appreciate that. I am going to start with 2 teaspoons of pink Himalayan salt and see how I fair. After 38 years of being programmed that salt is the devil... I am slightly concerned. My BP on low carb has dropped to 106/60, so I am not concerned about a slight raise on that. My girlfriend has a BP of 90/60, but struggles with cold hands (poor circulation) - this was the case pre low carb also. Do you think she would benefit from a similar protocol? All info will be researched. Thank you!
@@aidanbrooks6626 I lost 85 lbs doing keto/carnivore, from 250 down to 165. I too sometimes get cold hands and feet. I don't think this is necessarily from poor circulation and it may not even be a problem to worry about at all. She might want to seek a professional for direction if she's concerned about it. This might help: www.healthline.com/health/cold-feet-and-hands
@Ieuan Naiomi-Rose You're buying into the myth that salt is bad for you. Rather than argue the point I'll help you research things for yourself with the following: 1. Watch this video by a real MD, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1lpH06ely7E.html 2. Read this book: amzn.to/2BjgVpO Good luck on your research.
🤦♀️ I’ve only been doing 1 teaspoon of salt thinking that was enough. 😭 No wonder I felt so bad. I also have a question about potassium - I got a really bad cramp in my “abdominal wall” muscles on the left side out of nowhere. It felt like a calf cramp, but in my abdomen. When I pressed my hand there I could feel the muscle bunched up really hard like a twisting rope 💀 So painful. Does this happen because I’m not getting enough potassium? At the moment I’m between 2000-3000mg a day. Been doing keto a little over a week.
You would have to eat 3 POUNDS of lean beef to get 4,700 mgs of potassium. That's why I drink an electrolyte mix. It's the only way. Getting it from food is not realistic for most people.
Potassium is only dangerous if your consuming as much as your body weight in the supplement . Idk why the media has us thinking that too much potassium will cause harm... the rdi is 4,000mg per day and there’s no way we can get that from food . Plus if your active you need a lot and animal food is hard to get the rdi.
Oh my gosh, 2.25 tsp salt per day? Not for me. I tried 2 tsp for 1 week and I felt so stiff and my skin was SO DRY! I measure out 1 tsp sea salt (Redmond or pink Himalayan) per day, and that's about all I can handle. Plus, I am also taking 1 tsp of KCL. I don't want to take that much, but with gut dysbiosis, I can't eat potassium rich foods on a keto-vore diet, much less on carnivore.
I'm surprised that you said vitamin K and the graphic showed K2. We aren't very good at converting K into K2, which is what we actually need for proper calcium deposition.
I was getting headaches every day for a while there and thought it was either caffein withdrawal or high blood sugar. I was taking BC Powder every day to get rid of the headaches. But then I started drinking those LMNT electrolyte powder doohickies, and the headaches stopped. I guess my electrolytes were low. Good to know because I don't think BC Powder is good for your stomach if you take too much.
I'm conflicted about electrolytes...😄 I'm not conflicted about how important they are but I'm conflicted about if we really need to supplement beyond the adaptation period. I think about our early meat eating ancestors, I doubt that they had 2-3 tsp of salt/day available most of the time for example. I do have heart arythmias on a carnivore diet and I upped my salt and I take magnesium glycinate and potassium citrate and so far it has done nothing for me. I was about to order more today but I think I will try without supplements today and see what happens. (Still eating salt though.) It feels a bit scary though to omit the potassium and magnesium bcs I eat low protein and much fat so I on paper, I really get VERY low amounts of potassium and magnesium...But with that said, Paleo Medicina also recommend a high fat/low protein diet and they don't use supplemental electrolytes. I read articles on their homepage about this matter and they don't think it's necessary to supplement and they have studies to show for it. On the other hand...the soils today are often depleted of minerals and if there are no/low minerals in the food the animal eats, there will be no/low minerals in the meats we eat...Listening to carnivores that have been doing this for a long time, they don't seem to eat much salt (some don't eat salt at all and some only salt to taste) and they don't supplement. Again, maybe electrolytes are more of an issue during the adaptation? I'm not sure what to do, but I will try this day with salt as my only source of electrolytes and see if my arythmias subside or increases...I know from earlier experience on a regular diet that I can actually GET arythmias from supplemented magnesium for instance. I'll keep on experimenting...😄
I personally use 10gr - 15gr per day especially in summer with a lot of humidity and if I train with weights. I use whole Sicilian salt. greetings from Italy 🇮🇹
There's salt substitutes in the market with potassium chloride if anyone has trouble getting more of it. It's something used a lot in the fasting community.
I put 5g of sodium, 4.7g of potassium chloride and 400mg of magnesium bisglycinate chelate in litre of water and drink it throughout the day, is that good?
regarding the calcium there's also the ratio between phosphorous and calcium that has been shown to be important in various studies and tests on both humans and animals (herbivores and carnivores alike). We're supposed to get a ratio of 1-2:1 of Ca to P. On the carnivore diet we get a lot of P (often over 2000mg), but often very little Ca.
I’m one month into carnivore which I’m hoping to see my autoimmune diseases disappear. Now would you be able to tell me if this will help with Sjogrens and menieres , (which one of many autoimmune diseases I have),could my problem have been that I am low on electrolytes??
Thank you! I use Redmonds mineral drops but I think I need to add more salt. Maybe just eat it separately. I have palpitations but my BP is very good 👍.
You were very helpful!! Having trouble sleeping at night because of the palpitations. Using Dr. Berg’s electrolyte powder but I think it lowers my blood pressure from the Stevia added. Any ideas?
This makes so much sense as to why I felt great switching from vegan to keto the first week and then slowly started to feel tired again. When I started eating meat, I stopped seasoning my food because it’s just soooo tasty on its own (I missed the flavor of animal fat so much) So with no salt being added that must be the reason I’m slightly fatigued again. I bought an electrolyte powder with sodium, magnesium, calcium and potassium. Do you think this daily and adding pink salt to my food will be enough?
I use pink Himalayan salt and it’s good. I’m going to try Redmond’s salt 🧂 and see how I react to it. Salt keeps me from feeling fatigued/drowsy or developing cramps
5,000 mg Potassium Bicarbonate 2,300 mg Redmond Real Salt (Sodium Chloride and many other trace minerals) 600 mg Magnesium Sulfate I put about 2/3rds of that in my water and get the rest from food.
Hey Kait! I´ve been having heart palpitations and it seems to bet Mg and K. What do you recommend to supplement with? I am very sensitive to any additives/fillers/colours in the supplements. Also Magnesiumcitrate seems to upset my stomach (though it helps)... I got potash for K but I get heartburn even if I put it on my skin... I am pretty sure to get enough Na, I salt alot.
I’m confused about your recommended sodium vs potassium intake. Isn’t the ratio supposed to be approximately 2 : 1, 4.7g : 2.4g, potassium : sodium? Your recommendation is about 3 : 1, sodium : potassium.
I've been struggling badly and am ready to quit the carnivore diet after 6 and half weeks😢, my heart rate has increased and my heart pounds! I thought I needed potassium maybe I need sodium! HELP❤
Careful not to go overboard with the salt. I had heart palpitations so I started adding 1 tsp to my 20 oz water bottle every time I filled it with water. The heart palpitations went away but it tasted like I was drinking salt water. Within a week I started having diarrhea once a day then several times a day, a symptom of hypernatremia. It took a while to calibrate but 1/2 tsp per 20 oz *after* I'm done eating for the day seems to be the right balance for the day to straddle the healthy feeling line between heart palpitations and diarrhea. If I add salt while I'm still eating my food (which is well-salted), it is too much salt and the hypernatremia issues return.
This video has made me extremely concerned with my potassium.Im coming off of a healthy weight loss diet with a calorie deficiency.ate almost no red meat. Now im following the carnivore guidelines(eating wuen im hungry until full) but im only eating about 1500 calories a day and if I try to eat more I feel like im going puke, not sure if this feeling of being stuffed is because im eating red meat which I never used to do.Anyway my potassium is averaging about 1700mg a day...how tf can i possibly get 2 more grams of potassium.should i stop this diet? And I'm in danger?
I was looking at the bone broth that you posted the link of in your descriptions, But it has carrots onion garlic etc. in it I thought we can’t have that on a carnivore diet
I'm not super fussy when it comes to bone broth, the vegetables are strained out. For someone who is super sensitive to plants it might be a problem but for most people it's not worth stressing over 🙂
@@HealthCoachKait I don't think it specifies how much sugar is in each sachet. I recall the bag just says 'CONTAINS SUGARS AND SULFATES'. I'll look closer when I get home.
Yes! Preach! I use Redmond's, take magnesium and potassium supplements as well... But could probably cut back on those since I'm carnivore now and not keto. First thing people ask me when they ask for advice is what should they do... And my response is always always always .. increase your electrolytes!!!
I just started Carnivore diet a week ago. Im getting muscle cramps, and twitching and now headaches. I dont want to start pills. Can you get proper electrolytes from infused water. I live in Canada. I want a balance, not over do it. Ill look into bone broth too.
ive been on carnivore 2 month i salt my food and take electrolytes but i was suffering from palpitations i started adding fruit and they stopped my question is will my heart be damaged from this?
Hi Kait, great video! Just checking did you mean 5 grams of sodium, or 5 grams of salt? The former obviously being quit a lot more than the recommendations for an average diet- or is it that being on a carnivore diet means you need a lot more salt?
Table salt and most sea salts all contain about 40 percent sodium by weight. Kosher salt and some sea salts may have larger crystal sizes than table salt, so they may have less sodium by volume (e.g., by teaspoon or tablespoon).
