-More on Electron Configuration: Wikipedia-
"In atomic physics and quantum chemistry, the electron configuration is the distribution of electrons of an atom or molecule (or other physical structure) in atomic or molecular orbitals.[1] For example, the electron configuration of the neon atom is 1s2 2s2 2p6.
Electronic configurations describe electrons as each moving independently in an orbital, in an average field created by all other orbitals. Mathematically, configurations are described by Slater determinants or configuration state functions.
According to the laws of quantum mechanics, for systems with only one electron, an energy is associated with each electron configuration and, upon certain conditions, electrons are able to move from one configuration to another by the emission or absorption of a quantum of energy, in the form of a photon.
Knowledge of the electron configuration of different atoms is useful in understanding the structure of the periodic table of elements. The concept is also useful for describing the chemical bonds that hold atoms together. In bulk materials, this same idea helps explain the peculiar properties of lasers and semiconductors."

Once again, what my textbook and lecture failed to teach me in a week and countless hours of studying, I learned in 15 minutes watching your video. Thank you.

The abbreviations are meant to show core electrons, and noble gases always represent core electrons, and any electrons beyond that are valence. The neon configuration, whether neon itself or an ion like Mg2+, has 8 valence electrons and 2 core electrons. We can abbreviate the core electrons as [He], so the whole abbreviation is [He]2s22p6. Usually He is not used in abbreviations since it only represents 1s2--in other words, it's not enough of an abbreviation to bother with. Hope exam went well!!

This is really great. Something my AP text book could have not explained with this much detail and within a great amount of time. Orbitals and electron configuration are now so much easier to me. Thanks man, please don't stop making these videos. Keep it up!

The cobalt example: 3d7, it changes during the video, we have to fill all 5 d orbitals before pairing right, so all 5 has minimum 1 and the first 2 are paired ?
@CrashChemistryAcademy
@CrashChemistryAcademy 4 года назад
Yes that was a mistake, but google is rather unforgiving in terms of editing posted videos. You are right, first two 5d are paired, the other three have one electron each.

excellent tutorial but just one comment: isn't Pd (Palladium) just an exception ? because reading the periodic table, its electronic configuration isn't [Kr] 5s2 4d8 but [Kr] 5s0 4d10 ...
@CrashChemistryAcademy
@CrashChemistryAcademy 3 года назад
Yes your are correct. I need to put a correction in the description. It is an interesting exception since Ni and Pt are s2 d8.

is the configuration wrong at 4:44? you suddenly paired the electrons at 3d orbital
@CrashChemistryAcademy
@CrashChemistryAcademy 5 лет назад
Yes! that is an error. RU-vid is not very accommodating with editing, but I should be able to put a message on the screen. Thanks for noticing.
