Great tutorial! A couple more tips: I leave a small blob of solder on the tip of my iron when I am done. This helps protect from oxidation while it is stored. Also, you sometimes get LEDs that don't have different length legs. Another way to identify the cathode (- side) is to look for a flat edge on the side of the LED.

Amusing someone in the room builder group was asking for just this. As someone who has gone through mechanical engineering school and had a ton of projects that required controllers, leds, servos, motors, actuators, the dirty secret in engineering is they don't teach you all that much. Sure it's great to be able to nail "engineering theory for $400 Bob", but practical application it does not. This kind of video is exactly how I got the basic knowledge I needed to get into the nuts and bolts of engineering...and get through the various projects during school. Listen to Brian, be brave, and dive on in.

I have a suggestion, which may appear daunting at first for novice electro-nerds, but I think is an important step in greebly LED's: 555 timers. Get them LED's blinking without complicated and overpowered (for this application) microcontrollers. They can be quite simple once you use them, and knowing all the ins and outs isn't necessary for just getting some blinky-ness.

I had to learn all this and more when I built my lightsabers. If I recall there are a few online resistor calculators out there to help you figure out what resistor works best for whatever LED, but the math is pretty simple once you understand Ohm's Law.

Such a solid video. I was afraid of lights in props three years ago, but I dove in and learned. It is as simple as you say for a basic setup. I use the online calculators for the resistors, but the pre-wired are just so easy to use. If I had found this video years ago, I would have broken my fear back then. Now I love adding lights to everything!

@TerrainTronics
@TerrainTronics 2 года назад
Hey, DC -- I feel a little bad hijacking Brian's comments here - but you asked for inputs on the EXACT stuff I work on. (chasing, randmon, unison etc). I have 2 projects I've done in the last year (Projects, meaning circuit boards for sale) that can do exactly some of the stuff you're looking for. Have a look at the TT Harlech Castle board and the Caernarfon Castle board. They both can drive LED's (either RGB strips, or individual LED's etc) and have example code for arduino that you modify with your pattern.
@ekij133
@ekij133 2 года назад
Blinking LEDs you have two choices. 1] You can buy LEDs that have an in-built blinking circuit that flash them at a fixed rate. This is the easiest but and cheapest but gives you the least control. 2] Wire the LEDs to some control circuit that turns the power to the LED on and off to make it blink. This control circuit could be a simple astable circuit or a microcontroller following a complex program.

I think I speak for everyone when I say THANK YOU was the knowledge and look forward to any future knowledge you drop on us. If I were to ask for any knowledge in LEDS it would be how to connect the Leds to an Arduino nano, using a button system to switch between light effects. THAT could be powered by either rechargeable lithium AA batteries or by plug with another switch. I've seen a few RU-vid videos where things similar to that is made but i could never understand why extra electronics were added. like a W130 hall sensor or cc/cv buck converters. I'm also trying to design a solar battery charger that looks like the Endor Shield generator from Return of the Jedi.

Breadboards are awesome. I have ... so many I don't know how many, but dozens. Many of them end up 'long term'' in projects that probably should have been transferred to vero-board at some point. Lead solder fumes are bad for you, but as a hobbyist we don't use it a lot. Use in a ventilated space and your exposure will be minimal. Lead-free solder is a whole lot harder to work with "If you've never used lead-free solder before, don't start now." 330 Ohms is fine choice for a 5V or 9V source but it's a little too small a value for many types of LEDs if using a 12V source. You'd be better off with a 560 Ohm resistor for 12V. More LEDs in series does not draw more current and therefore does NOT drain the battery faster. But you're limited to three or four before the Voltage across each LED drops too low to light the LED and the LEDs will dim the more you use. More LEDs in parallel does draw more current and will drain the battery faster. But you can wire as many LEDs in parallel as the power source can supply.. [Which is the opposite of what you said @ 9:10]

You can get by on a single equation for figuring current limiting resistors for LEDs, but you will need to know the forward voltage if the LED and current in milliamps. Very easy. Wiring them in parallel means if one goes out they all don't. In the '70s, LEDs were dim things that came in red, green, and yellow. They come in all colors now( as well as infrared and ultraviolet), and amazingly bright. Don't forget miniature incandescent bulbs and grain of wheat bulbs. Old school, but for some uses, they still have a place ..

Awesome Brian! I have had that same soldering iron for years. :-) I have 4 other irons with different tips so I just heat up the one I want to use... Lol On the resistors for led I just keep 220, 330, 1K, 1.2K, 1.5K's around because on my computers I don't like real bright leds so to dim them down I use a 1K but as you said red, blue, white, green leds have different forward voltages so once again the resisters are the key. Otherwise you will need R2D2 to help figure out the values... :-P A Bruce Tip, "keep a watch coin cell" around to test you led during the project to make sure it is a good Led. No resistor needed to test the leds... Keeps ya out of the Tantui Bars and trying to figure out what is wrong... Lol I think these videos will be of some great use, so yes do more Please! It’s all coming back to me… ohm’s law… in high school, now…. Oh, crap - 50 years ago! Yeah, we had electronics theory then - I took 3 years of electronics in 2 years of school - many of the graduates went on to MIT, NASA, Boeing - me…. I joined a band… But learned a ton of useful stuff… like how the tiniest capacitors could hold enough of a charge, that when you buried them in an eraser, with just a tiny bit of the leads poking out, energized the sucker, then pitched it across the math room to someone requesting it [making sure they weren’t in your electronics class]…. Like I said, I learned a ton of useful stuff. So I’m dusting off my soldering iron, and getting to it. Thanks for this refresher - we didn’t have LEDs back then, just big ol’ diodes [and they were!] - and if anyone asks to borrow an eraser…

How about a video on making a switch turn a led on and off. Or a push button switch.

Yes! Thank you so much. Been waiting for this. My problem comes with multiple leds. I am currently building a full size R2D2. I know kits are sold for a few hundred dollars. I would rather learn how to DIY them. I have been looking for tutorials can’t seem to get any good ones. Hopefully you can help. Been a fan of you,your wife and cool dad. Thanks to all you guys, can’t wait for your next project.
