If you could only get ONE for FREE and could only use that mic for the rest of your life, which would you pick?
@samwood8448
@samwood8448 6 лет назад
definitely, the RE27 as I prefer the sound to it and personally I feel it gives a warmer sound. Also As a user of cherry MX blue switches, the RE27 is meant to pick up less background noise and if I was to purchase one of them it would have to be the RE27

The RE27 for sure. The SM7B, in some instances, sounds muffled and muddy.

You put a lot of 'passion' into your reviews. I appreciate that. As well you pointed out aspects to think about as far as powering them and background noise. I really enjoyed this review because your passion and enthusiasm in your tone was 'real' without it being over the top. It was just right. This review is above others because of what I spoke of. Friggin liked it ... loads - !

These two mics aren't compared enough. thank you for making it clear. To me, it's a clear win for the RE27, and I recently swapped over the SM7B for the RE27 and would never look back. The SM7B was good in the 1900's but for the 20th century the RE27 is far better with much better clarity. People hear what they want to hear and that's why so many love the SM7B

Another great video Lo. You are underrated. These are my 2 favourite microphones ever. I don't think one is better than the other, they simply sound different. EQ, noise gate, comp makes a massive difference as well with microphones. I have the Shure SM7B, and I'm such a freak I wanna also buy the RE27N/D just because lol. It's like someone who owns a corvette and a camaro. I love mics. Stay safe my friend. I forgot to mention, with the Shure SM7B and a Scarlett Solo or 2i2 audio interface, you don't need a cloud lifter. I have my pre-amp cranked about 80-90% and about a 25 dB boost in the EQ, and it's clean. I tried the cloud lifter, and it does work, however for day to day podcast / broadcast / livestream I argue it's not required unless you're doing post editing for recording a band or something.

Through my ATH-M70x, the RE27N/D sounds so nasal and comb-filtered to my ears. Reminds me of my Electro-Voice CO4, which have a weird frequency response that needs EQ correction in the mids and highs. The SM7B sounds very full and rounded, handles high SPL, and barely needs any post-processing to get a "pro sound". God bless!

I think the RE27 sounded better on your voice. I have an SM7B for myself right now, but I'm not fully in love with it. I see a lot of sports shows even using the RE27 these days (Colin Cowherd, Stephen A Smith, etc.) and they sound AWESOME with the RE27. Thanks for showing the differences between the two. The SM7B just has that muffled sound and I could hear it even with you and it is beginning to drive me insane! I EQ the mic fairly heavily and it still doesn't sound the way I want. Sad days.

The SM7B also has the high pass filter and presence boost, making it more versatile for those who think it sounds a bit too pronounced on the low end. Mic technique plays into this as well. IMHO, I think the SM7B is the best choice, but every voice is different. Additionally, you HAVE to have a pop filter in front of that RE27.
@LoKnows
@LoKnows 6 лет назад
Yeah i totally missed on the opportunity to use a pop filter with the RE27. I originally thought of making comparison with the the presence boost and high pass on both mics, since they both have them, but i just left it out in the interest of time. May be on a separate future video if that is something people really wanted to know.
@brettshell1

The SM7B has these beautiful growling deeps in the middle! I think it's not possible to add this to the RE27 with an EQ.

It seems that the SM 7 mics low gain would be a huge drawback?
@edwarddodge7937
@edwarddodge7937 Год назад
SM7B sounds like it had more body. But you can add more body with a little bit of compression. Seemed like the EV RE27 was more susceptible to plosives though.
@Stampede_G
@Stampede_G 3 месяца назад
Yeah one of the biggest things about the 7B is you don't need any additional gear. It's internally shock mounted and designed to reject plosives out of the box. I hate buying a 500 dollar mic, then needing an additional shock mount and 50 dollar BSW Re-Pop to make it optimal. Would rather spend 400 and be done.
@DarkPa1adin
@DarkPa1adin 6 лет назад
I might disagree with your points on condenser vs dynamic about picking up sound sources. I deal more with live than studio, but in my experience, a lot has to do with Volume of Sound Source over Gain. The higher the gain, obviously you will pick up more noise/background noise. Position of sound source matters too. If we all eat our microphones, condensers can be adjusted with lower gain and hence won't pick up much of a background noise as you mentioned... Shouldn't the ability to pick up anything be attributed more to polar pattern? Also depending on whether your headphone can reproduce under negative 48db sound sources like aircon wind or some footsteps outside a non-isolated room.
@LoKnows
@LoKnows 6 лет назад
Very true, the polar pattern is a huge factor and yes, mic technique and the variable factors of what you have your gains setting at can make a lot of difference. But lets just say, if you just had to plug and record, there would be a lot more tweaking with a condenser mic compared to a dynamic. Playing with gain, playing with compression or gate if it was connected to a preamp, where as with these mics, you can expect to get a certain sound off the bat without to much tweaking. Now there is no arguing that with condenser mics, you get far better detail in the voice compared to dynamics, but that is because of the sensitivity of the mics, of course i know, you know this. In short, i have a TLM 49 and im telling you, if you are in anything but a treated area, that thing could pick up a mosquito fart, and the atoms in the air shifting. We don't need to hear all that :)....or do we?!

Maybe not for him in this video but when I tested these mics the RE27 had way too much high end for me. It sounds flimsy. Whereas the Shure SM7B has a nice warm quality sound.
@DarkPa1adin
@DarkPa1adin 6 лет назад
I am in the SM7B camp (listening to it with normal safe-hearing volume) due to its bass response. it feels a tad bassier than RE27 and I am a basshead who sadly uses ATH M70x.

the 7b is rather noisy without a cloudlifter. I prefer the re27 because of its radio sound, but that limits its usage to just broadcasting and podcasting. the 7b is more versatile in that sense cuz it can be used for recording voiceover as well.
@LoKnows
@LoKnows 6 лет назад
Yeah for sure! When i did the review for the re27 and i read over a bed of music, i was like YIKES! This is horrible for any kind of audio production outside of broadcasting and podasting

The RE27 is way more sensitive to plosives. It otherwise sounds a bit better than the SM7B here without the Cloudlifter, but, as you said, the SM7B needs extra gain to be at its best.
@LoKnows
@LoKnows 6 лет назад
You know i would have to agree. After going back and forth editing the video, i did seem to favor the RE27 a bit more.
@danmagoo
@danmagoo 6 лет назад
Haha, well I still like the SM7B better when it is set up with either a Cloudlifter or a strong pre-amp -- but the RE27 sounded better (except for the plosives) in your video without Cloudlifter. So I think we agree all around about both mics, and they are both good. If I could use "only one for life" it would be the SM7B, *if* I get to keep my DBX 286S, or a Cloudlifter.

You're the voice the sm7b was designed for. Lack of low end. The 27 is definitely something I'm looking for since I have the re20 already and I sound muffled I'm guessing it's due to the bass.

in germany the re27 costs 750€...are arround 840 dollar.....insane but sadly this was my favourite ^^...for singing have only 2 mics this one and the gefell m930 ... the re27 for demos and most final recordings and the gefell m930 for more vocal driven tracks and kinda ballad stuff ...perfect duo....took me long to find the 2 ones that fits perfect.... there are many good mics outthere ^^

wooowww ambos son increibles es dificil decidir porque son diferentes. sm7b parece mas opaco mas oscuro y re27 mas brillante. pero en esta oportunidad prefiero el sm7b, ahora quizas con el re20 elija EV

they both good mic when you ads there cloud lifter the shure sound more fuller and add more to its presence ... the re27nd is already a good mic.. I will say it depends on your voice and what you're looking to achieve... the EV is more tailored primarily for podcast or radio use while the shure is more of musician/studio roll in so the shure is more versatile all round but when it come to podcast ill still go with re27nd or better spend less with Rode Podmic if all am din is podcast

You guys really gotta stop making your buying decisions based on someone else's voice. EVERYONE'S VOICE IS DIFFERENT. Also I am not sure if he matched these mics exactly in terms of volume/gain levels.
@inxiti

Start To Finish Podcasting These reviews help prospective buyers because with so many reviewers using the same microphones it enables people without the ability to test the mics in person to look for someone with a similar voice to substitute their own when deciding. They are helpful but, they are clearly not an end all be all solution, an no one believes they are outside of maybe yourself.
@starttofinishpodcasting3721
@starttofinishpodcasting3721 4 года назад
@@inxiti If I thought they were the end-all be-all I wouldnt have never made that comment. People need to stop chasing the ("I want this mic because everybody else has it") philosophy. It's like a guy who wears a size 10 shoe looking at a video of a guy doing a review of a 15 size shoe and then that guy with the 10 size she goes out and buy the shoe that is a size 15. Wow he may think it's nice it still doesn't fit his size so this is why people need to stop chasing what they see on RU-vid and just figure out what's good for them not what's good for somebody else.

Both sound good, but the RE27 sounds much better than the SM7B. The SM7B is over-hyped as an 'industry standard', and comparing the two, the RE27 just sounds more pleasing and clear.
