Thanks, this was exactly what I was looking for!! I already bought this, but didn't feel like reading the manual. You showed me the two things I needed to know. How to scan and how to test. Thanks so much! :-)

Here's a fun fact... the lights will still light green when scanning or doing a network check even if you wire the cable end 100 percent backwards. Meaning the green/white is in position 8 and brown is in position 1. I had no ethernet connection after wiring the house. At first glance, with this tester, everything looked good. Looking closer though, I noticed that the sender was counting from 1 to 8 and the receiver was counting from 8 to 1 on a particular cable. A closer inspection showed that I had the plug 100% backwards. It would seem that having it like that would have presented as a different error. Hey, now I know and now YOU know.

Can you use the scan or network function to find where in a cable there is an open or short?

So much easier than measuring pins with a multimeter!

Can you use this to test ethernet ports at that built into the wall?

I had one of these and the tone generator would randomly go dead and then come back and when it did work it blasted cross talk into all the wires. It was unuseable. I sent it back to amazon. Youre really better off getting a used tempo/greenlee/progressive on ebay if you dont want to spend much.

I have a ton of ethernet jacks in my house and in the basement is a plethera of ethernet cables that are all unmarked unfortunately. So, do i run an ethernet cable to the jack into the emitter or the other device? Does it matter?

The scan function is unreliable, hard to find the wires. Mine seems to be dead after a few uses
