In this video I show how to replace the poor quality Blade guides that are fitted to these bandsaws with Top quality replacement guides.
The original blade guides are no longer available but this third party set of Guides are far superior to the original.
You can obtain the guides featured in the video from a company called Powertool spares, their web address is shown below.
(Please note I have no connection with this company other than being a customer)

I forgot to mention how much I enjoyed that they included the drilling guide in the kit and then tell you not to use it! I'm still giggling at that.

Hi Mark, thanks for the extra comment. It was very easy to position the hole anyway without the jig, it won't be wasted though, it has found it's way in to my metal collection and will find a use one day in another project.

Our Men's Shed has just been donated one of these- and I was amazed at the poor quality of the guides; really lets down the saw. Will be buying or making a set like this...

Thanks for watching and for your comment. Indeed the original guides are very poor quality, they are made of what my friend calls 'Muckite' (sort of cast alloy mix), whilst the replacements I fitted are proper machined alloy, they improve the saw hugely.

@@scrimperuk Some call it Chinesium... Even if they used proper material, the design is rather strange. Running on the edge of ball races at each side and the back above the table, and rather crude sliding blocks underneath- one straight and one at an angle. Although I would normally make replacements (I have a machine shop) I think the Shed can afford these, as the saw was free... I find the fence rather poor too- if you tighten the clamp it moves inwards a couple of millimetres! I think it will need a fair amount of fettling. The inserts are crying out to be 3D printed, so no problem there. Thanks for your efforts.

Have bought the kit.Didnt understand the template error. Great video. Very helpful. Thanks

Thanks for your comment Jan. Template was designed as a drilling guide but it was only correct on some models, it's simple to workout where to drill without it anyway.

Thanks very much John, I bought a second hand one of these and in renovating it the lower guide broke just as yours had (loved the improvised 3 pin plug replacement guide) and now I know where to get and how to fit some replacement guides.

Good to see you again John! I agree with you about those dreadful little table inserts - Record want eleven quid for that ghastly wee bit of plastic! I'm still using mine but it'll be a bit of plywood come the time. Thanks for this video, it's always nice to have maintenance information.

Good to hear from you again Mark, I also have a Startrite bandsaw which I bought 30+ years ago with the same plastic inset the broke, the wooden version is still fine after 20 years.

Thanks for posting this video John. I managed to acquire a used Bas 317 recently. The durability of the metal seems fine, but i really dislike the design of the guides themselves. These replacements look great and I'll definitely be looking into purchasing some. Glad to see your still making videos. Edit: apparently this won't fit a Bas 317. back to the drawing board then.

Thanks for the kind comment, shame the kit won't fit your saw but I bet there is a similar kit that will fit.

Second attempt to comment. I didn't realise the the Elektra Bekum was the same as my Record RSBS14. I bought it in 2001 and it came with the same blocks that you are fitting. So, my thinking is that the insert would be the same size. I 3D print mine these days and keep a few in a drawer. I've messaged you on UKWS. Thanks for another great video.

Hi Gary, many thanks for your kind comment. I remember those Record bandsaws and they did look the same as the Elektra models. Great shame what happened to that great company Record who once manufactured top quality machines in their Sheffield factory until the switched to the far east. (I have replied on UKWS)

Good one John. I have a jet bandsaw and find that formica makes a great replacement insert
@fredtaylor6771
@fredtaylor6771 Год назад
Mark try formica as a replacement insert. I use it on a Jet.
@scrimperuk
@scrimperuk Год назад
Thanks Fred, I never though of using formica, however the stuff I have is not thick enough or do you use a backing? The insert on this saw is almost 1/4inch thick.
@fredtaylor6771

@@scrimperuk Fortunately mine was the correct thickness/

I think you're referring to Tufnol, usually in sheets 3 to 6mm thick, was used for circuit boards up until the 1970s.

Thanks, very useful video. How much is the replacement kit as I'm thinking of buying a second hand one of these which may have this problem. Cheers, Joe
@scrimperuk
@scrimperuk Год назад
Hi Joe, The kit cost £72 UK. the guides in the kit are far superior to those fitted originally which are made from a sort of cast alloy mix which many describe as "Muckite". One fitted the machine performs far better than before.

Hello John, do you know if this guide set would fit the Elektra Beckum 250 G model
@scrimperuk
@scrimperuk Год назад
Not sure to be honest the 250 looks to be the same design only smaller in size, I would imagine you would be able to make it fit with a little fiddling, but probably best to have a word with the company selling the kit, their link is in my heading above.

Could you share with me how to slow a whirligig down.. thanks…. Is number of fans on propeller a start? Or what is a gear box… help.. thanks
@scrimperuk
@scrimperuk Год назад
I have tried propellers with up to 12 blades on them but to be honest I am not experienced enough to say if more blades is faster or not, I have used a 3 blade propeller on a simple whirligig but generally I quite like them to 'whizz' around! Some years ago I built one with two chickens on and a 4 bladed all wood propeller, it was the first whirligig I built, it was really fast and one day in a storm the two chickens 'flew' off! The wooden propeller was like a Spitfire prop!

@@scrimperuk thank you. Again I do enjoy watching you in your shop. The chicken gig sounds pretty funny! What I want to know is how do you slow them down?

It is not easy trying to carry out out a repair and at the same time operate cameras and explain what I am doing entirely off the cuff without any script. My main objective is only to show other people with the same issue how to do the modification. I don't make the videos for max views and have not received or claimed any payment from ebay for any of my video content. In essence I do the best I can with the filming but I am not a professional film-maker.
