Elektron Digitone - NAMM 2018

This guy really knows his craft. Well done Elektron for this device and well done Cuckoo for this interview. Somehow you always manage to get people out of the sales-pitch talking that dominates the other trade show videos!

Wow, Simon is a badass with that FM tattoo, seriously. I'm pretty much sold on the digitone after hearing him explain the thought process behind the number of operators and his passion for the nuances. Now I have to figure out what I can sell to to afford digitone!

This is the best video from the whole NAMM '18. The amount of love of the FM that Simon shows goes beyond the awesome. The dude knows and love his thing. And you are perfect as interviewer shooting the precise questions at the most oportune moment. It seems tha Simon has depured the way of interfacing with FM until take it to a next level. Awh, now I love Simon and his passion and knowledge of FM Synthesis. I want to go and apply his philosophy to my volca FM and tELHARMONIC - but mostly I'm so excited for this. We're living in such a golden age! The true potential of this form of synthesis is finally being opened and explored all these years later. :D Thank you for such a warm video Cuckoo!

Kudos Cuckoo! We rarely get this kind of depth and focus from NAMM videos. This is a testament to you and to Simon (and to Electron for having engineers at their booth and not just sales people). This is an incredibly useful piece of footage! Usually one would have to comb through a dozen videos before accumulating this amount of information, explanation, and demonstration. Well done and thank you, good sir! Also, I have been remiss - I have enjoyed your videos for years but I have never actually subscribed. As of today, that has been rectified! Peace.

Best NAMM video yet! I will be learning FM with the Digitone. It is everything I need for mallet percussion synthesis, and also sine-generated tones for therapy.

Very very excited about this. I've been searching for a compact FM synth that would fit into my live sets and nothing out there really felt compelling. This looks like it will fit the bill perfectly.

ok so i'm believing the hype and might look at getting one in a year or so (that's my MO), but major props to Cuckoo for the technical finesse with these videos; in that (NAMM) environment it's no insignificant thing! You are truly a one person media band

Very informative and entertaining. Never to sweet with a balanced mix that keeps you tuned in along side a well rounded butter roll! I'm already dreaming on how I am going to incorporate this into my work. You guys are reading my mind or something. Like, everyone has been looking at me funny when I speak of FM. WHERE is the FM. Now it is here! Ask and I shall receive!(Loud-c6-Ahaaah) The stars align!

That jam at the end reminds me of a Frankie Bones mixtape from the 90’s. A sound I’ve been after ever since. Great machine - now I really want it!

Awesome breakdown of the Digitone! Simon's explanation really clarified a lot of things that I couldn't understand after reading the manual, like that the operator C always being a carrier (+ I love the nerdiness of it being called "C" for that reason 🤣)

Question for anyone who has their hands on the Digitone. I primarily love FM synthesis for making bass sounds. Does this have the capability to make some unique ones? More in the dubstep realm of sound design

I really really wish this had a song mode. Or should I just give in and a get an MPC Live to sequence everything? But I want to make Sega Genesis style songs on this thing. Or should I keep my FB-01?

Can the envelopes allow for legato playing? Also, portamento?? The lack of legato and portamento really bummed me out about the volca fm. With how much subtractive stuff seems to be in Digitone, those two settings could pretty easily turn this thing into a solid analog modeling synth.

the digitone is awesome, have not had elektron gas in awhile but this is a really cool twist on an fm groovebox thing, looks way more fun than programming my dx200 and with the variable waveshapes and filters i don’t even care that the digitone isn’t 6op. definitely need to get my hands on one of these, they sold out from elektron.se so fast

Does this have song mode or the ability to chain patterns? I bought the Digitakt and I love the sounds, but absolutely cannot understand why they left those simple features out of a “drum machine/sampler”. Yes you can make one chain you cannot save. Yes, I’ll be buying this thing ASAP.

I hope this will breathe new life into the oft-neglected world of FM synthesis. It looks like a great little FM groovebox. I've usually found FM awkward to work with, but when done well it can sound really good. Perhaps they've finally managed to make FM more accessible and intuitive.

Wrong video to ask this maybe, but how do you sync a pocket operator with one of these? Buy a korg volca and sync it via midi and then use it's sync impulse output to a PO? :)

well, here we are 4 years later and Digitone still is valid in 2022, new Syntakt is great but no arpeggiator/polyphony, Digitone's got that!

Am I understanding the literature correctly: it's an 8 voice, multitimbral synth, but there's only 4 synth tracks on the sequencer and 4 MIDI tracks? I don't understand that design decision; especially when you consider that the Digitakt is 8 and 8... Anyone?

Will this unit have the +drive ?
