How to Digitone (Part 1): Sound Pool, Multiple Sound Tracks & Save Sounds

A quick video to explore three basics of using the Digitone:
- Create a sound pool (02:23)
- Use multiple sounds on a single track (04:51)
- Save your own sounds to a Sound Pool (07:51)
I am super lazy and super impatient, so reading manuals isn't my preferred activity. I imagine others are like this too, so as I learn more on the Digitone I'll share them here. VERY MUCH FOR BEGINNERS!

Hey all - if the video is helpful I'll make more sooner rather than later. Just post a comment about a feature you'd like me to stumble through!

Definitely helpful. I think there might be Digitone niche for short and to the point tutorials that focus on a specific function.

Hi Bearded Peeps. Enjoyed the video. Definitely much better than reading an entire manual (especially if you don't own a Digitone and wish to ensure that it will do what you want it to). I've been looking into using a Digitone (or any Elektron device really) to use as an external drum machine connected to my sequencer. I want to know if you've found out a way to create a sound pool and assign a MIDI note to each sound (or if this is even possible). I've been told that using a Digitone/Digitakt/Rytm/AnalogFour in this way is a waste, but hey, I would still like to know that it can do this. Thanks!
@SimonArrowsmith
@SimonArrowsmith 6 лет назад
Thanks! I guess people are saying that because all those synths have sequencers built in. But I say use it how the hell you want :) I've not really got into the midi side of any of the synths (beyond master clock) as they are so brilliantly self contained. I'm not sure you would be able to get an external sequencer to trigger different sounds from the sound bank, just the sounds loaded to the tracks - so on the Digitakt that would give you 8, Digitone 4. You can control a lot of the parameters though, so I might be wrong.

Dude... I just recently got a Digitone last week and I am also NOT a manual type of guy. This video right here has been the single most helpful video for me to learn how to start from scratch and build amazing sounds. Keep these videos up, especially on the Digitone, because I could certainly use it! haha

I've heard that so often that people hate reading the manuals. To be honest, I can't understand why. The Elektron manuals are some of the best out there, and they really take the time to explain their devices. It was only when I started to RTFM that I understood my Octatrack. In my opinion, they're really worth it. This, in combination with videos like yours, is a good way to learn to use this awesome kind of gear. :)

Your tutorial is fun to watch and very helpful. I'm more an analog, "one-knob-per-function" guy with a Moog Sub 37, Folktek Mescaline, Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms System 201, Avalon bassline, etc. But I'm very attracted to this "menu diving" Digitone. Contrary to my current methodology, I'm thrilled by the versatility and precision of parameter manipulation on this FM synthesis device that includes subtractive filtering. It looks rather logical and easy to figure out, if one is patient. I plan to order a Digitone in a few days. THANKS for making this video.
@SimonArrowsmith
@SimonArrowsmith 6 лет назад
Thanks Steven. I have a few analogue synths too. I'm recent returner to the world of hardware and so thought the FM was a good new buy as it's not like anything else I have. It's a great tool and I'm finding lots of new sounds by playing with it. Menu diving can be a bit of a pain, but it can be easy enough once you get used to it :)

I so needed this video. Please do more on this device. This is my first Elektron device so I've been facing a steep learning curve. The manual has been good for some things but an explanation of sound pools and why we even needed them has been difficult to find. And as for saving things, well, that's been a random hit and miss experience... more videos on the Elektron fundamentals please...!

You can also save sounds to the +DRIVE. Sound Pool is just a BEST OFF, mainly used for Sound Locks on a pattern, within the same project.

I fell for the a4mk1 for sound design and warm analogue sounds As synths are my favourite over sampling and then the monomachine went too high as fm always interested me as well. When this came out I just melted. Replaces a monomachine perfectly. 👍

Why is it impossible for someone to answer the question 'how do I save to the sound library' (not the pool). Basically I made a sound, from scratch, I love what I've made... and then all I could find was how to save to the sound pool so I've done that but when I do this, for some reason, none of my library sounds are visible any more and I'm stuck on my sound pool sound only and this is not what i want. I want to save it as a sound preset in my library... so I can choose it at any point I want for future / separate projects. I'm baffled how no one is answering this question?? Any help would be appreciated. First things first, how on earth to I get my main preset library back as it seems to just be stuck on this sound pool?

Thanks for posting this! Very helpful. Do you know if there’s a way to pull sounds of your own from other projects into a new project? I haven’t been able to figure out how to do that. I just have a weird thing about not using factory presets, so I’d like to be able to access mine. So far I’ve just been basically saving as a new project so that I have all of my presets from the other project ready to go or just starting from scratch with brand new sounds, but neither method is ideal. What am I missing? I’d love a video explaining that. I’m sure others would too. Thanks!

Thanks Rob. A sequence of tracks? Sort of like creating a song. I would use the chaining function which I think works the same as it does on the Digitakt. I haven't had time to dig into that yet as I got sidetracked by the Analog 4 which has song mode (loooooove song mode) I'll have a play and post a video soon :)

Those "things" you are having trouble naming are generally called "steps", or in the Elektron parlance "trigs", not "beats" (which is a musical term that means something else).

To get close to Digitone, you'd need four Volca FM, a polyphonic patterning sequencer (dunno a cheap one, maybe two Novation Circuit?), a mixer a multi effect. Seems more expensive and a lot more bother, but yeah, you could start with just one FM...

Haha. Yeah I find out everything off RU-vid that I need to learn a new synth. I take it the digitone is the exact same as the digitakt sequencer? As in you can have a different sound on each trig if you so desired then use conditional trigs to get them to play at different times. Oh and elektron like to call steps ‘trigs’
@SimonArrowsmith
@SimonArrowsmith 6 лет назад
Yeah I think it's the same. I got my Digitakt just before the Digitone, so I've not had a chance to learn that properly yet. The workflow appears to be the same, so I guess that's why there aren't videos of the really simple stuff on RU-vid yet. STEPS! yes - thanks :)
