Can't tell you how much I enjoyed the video... Actually all your videos. The music was just right. Not screaming and jaring and could hear the vehicles growing as they worked the rocks. I'm not quite ready to hit such a trail, perhaps some day. Thanks again for a great video!
Brad just watched your video, we used to do that trip in late February to Early March. In the mid 1970’ in mostly full size pickup trucks. There wasn’t any of the asphalt or concrete fill back then. Big differences! We would spend a week camping at Squaw Flats Campground, later we found a primitive camp down on Indian Creek, there was a waterfall we used for bathing.
Thanks for the great video. I did Elephant Hill trail as a kid (35+ years ago) and your shots brought back great memories and reminders why I've always wanted to go back.
I ran this trail in 1987 with my Samurai and it was fantastic. They did not have the regulations then that they do now. I hope to run it again someday. The scenery is fantastic.
Thanks for sharing your experience! We climbed Elephant Hill last year and really enjoyed it! Despite scraping the paint off a mirror and breaking a rear side window going through the "squeeze". We continued farther in and spent the night at Horse Hoof campsite. Most epic scenery ever!
Last year I was able to squeeze my Tundra through with less than 1" to spare! When i was a young boy scout, our scoutmasters used to take full size suburbans and Jeep wagoneer's through the pocket. I believe the soil has washed out over the years.
I know how much work it takes to film this to get in and out of the Jeep. Much appreciate this perspective and the time you take to do this. I will visit this place some day. Thank you!
I have done that trail a dozens times in my life. Most recent I did it in a first gen tundra, mirror's folded in and no more than 1/2 inch on either side! You also have the option to go through Beef Basin for an overnighter. Also Devils Kitchen campsite is absolutely amazing !
Watching these videos make me want to buy a Jeep and go out and do some of these trails; I have played in the mud with my 4x4 Chevy, but nothing compared to this, what a good time this appears to be.
Great Video! I have done this trail in a '76 CJ5 stock, without lockers, T150 (3 speed) tranny and 3.73 gears. Although it is not the most challenging trail I have been on, it is my favorite. I too was amazed at the scenery, and I go to Moab once or twice a year. The scenery is great wherever you go but this one takes the cake. I plan on staying overnight in the park next time. Thanks for the entertainment.
Just ran this a few days ago. Camped at Devils Kitchen. Going uphill on the way out was fun. Too bad you didn’t film that, since it’s among the most challenging part of the trail. In 103F temps, I don’t blame you though. Great vid. Thanks Brad.
Brad, I always enjoy your videos! Great quality and the information about the topics and trails are helpful, entertaining, and captivating. Thank you! Lord willing, I hope to see you on a trail someday!
Great stuff Brad, we're headed back in March/April for EJS and think we'll put Elephant Hill trail on the to do list. Hopefully we'll have the Willy's done in time.
Brad your videos never disappoint! Fantastic job! I will be going back to Moab. I have added a couple new trails to my list for the next trip. Thanks for all you hard work filming and editing. I can't wait for the Colorado footage! We missed each other there by two weeks!
Weird how the trail didn’t seem super extreme but they gave you the $2000 warning. Could kinda take the fun out of some of it, but it looked like a good time!
Hey Brad, I’m headed out to Moab and Colorado in about a week. Really intrigued by Elephant Hill. I’m in a 2017 JK sport. 2 1/2” lift and 35’s. No lockers. Fairly inexperienced for this level of trails. Ran a fair amount of trails here on the east coast but out there is totally different. With patience and common sense would you say it’s doable for my rig. Thanks been enjoying your channel from very early on.
Fantastic trail! Drove it a couple of times in the '80's. Then rode it on a mountain bike 🚵♀️ (don't recommend that). Can get very hot in summer. It's not so hot in spring or fall. Take two or three vehicles, because a breakdown out there can be very tough.
I've run that trail about six times, now. I agree, it's my (our) favorite Moab-area trail for sure. We were there a couple of weeks after you. The Elephant Hill trail has really changed over the years. It is quite a bit easier now than in the past. The new permit system sucks. BTW, we are neighbors. Watch for my silver 2-Door out in the dez. License plate W9JIM.
That looks an amazing trail! Those rock formations around Devils lane look like something from another planet! That's what I love about your films and your channel, for me living in the UK, I will probably never get to see stuff like that (Well not in my rig anyway!), so seeing it at all is an absolute joy and a pleasure. I would love to get out there in a group setting like what you guys have done.
My son and I couldn't get enough of the rock formations, they never got old. I'm so glad I was able to share this experience. If you are ever in Utah, they have plenty of Jeep rental places... would be an epic vacation!
headed out west here if a couple of weeks, great job on the videos, its given me great ideas for our trip. we will start out around Grand Canyon and make our way to Moab (Moab the week of May 13th) would be awesome if us Kentucky boys could hit the trails with some of you all!!! keep up the good work!
Awww...everyone knows the scenery on the trip back can be uniquely different than the trip in...but I get why you choose to not film on your way out. I would have watched it, though.) Cool scene.
Did I see that the Park Service has put some concrete down on some of those drop ledges? Not the big ones but it looks like they did so on some of the smaller ones. Weird stuff they do. Another great video for sure! I'm totally adding this trail to next tears plans for adventure in our XJ! Thanks for such a wonderful video tour of this place!
The trail was a featured trail for the Moab jeep safari a few years ago, and as such they raised 5k and some volunteers came out and patched some spots.
Awesome filmmaker! Also always makes things better when you have beautiful subject matter to work with, but you definitely have great eye for filming and awesome editing skills. Would be cool to see what kind of cameras and editing tools you use. Also what gps trail map application are you using on the mini pad? With all the trails you've done do you honestly ever see a need to go with tons and 40's? I have been debating in my mind going tons and 40's or keeping my D44's with 37" tires and doing something like terraflex full float adapter for the rear and their locking hubs upfront. All ready have my front 44 sleved and gusset. Thanks for all the great information.
Thank you! You can see all of my camera gear in the amazon store. I used Gaia Maps for this trip and was very happy with it, something I think I'll be using for a while to come. No need for 40's in my opinion... but they sure would be nice if they were in the budget!
Adding this to my bucket list. When being the spotter, have you given any thought to utilizing a headset that plugs into the handheld radio? That way it keeps both your hands-free for waving, pointing, etc.
Amazing scenery and incredible rock formations that loose rock on those switchbacks look hairy ! So great to be able to experience it with you albeit in video. How have the rigs been holding up throughout the journey , tires must be getting chewed up huh? Thanks again Brad .
BTW... SOB hill does not need 40-inch tires to run through without backing up. And that is now, after the trail received nearly no maintenance for close to two years.
Brad, It would be cool if on your website you put dates of a timeline of the modifications you have done to your vehicles. Im watching these videos again before heading to Moab. I cant remember if you where on 35s or 37s in this video?
Obsoletely something we want to go back and check out, I've seen some amazing pictures of the two rivers coming together. We were honestly all whooped after hiking the Joint in 103 degree weather.
Amazing trail Brad!!! I have a request, when you finish doing the trail videos, can yo make a good review (like you always do) on how you felt the new fox shox? Thank you.
Thank you! Yes, there was a small parking lot at the trailhead. Plus the Ranger station, which has a larger parking lot, is only a couple minutes down the road.
Brad, great Video. Are you still running stock rock sliders? Have they seen any rock sliding or impacts? I am also still running stock Rubicon rock sliders and just wondering how well there fare when they get full weight of the Jeep pressing down on them and a rock.
Thanks! Yes they are still stock and they have taken a beating over the last couple years and holding up really well. I will most likely upgrade eventually to give me some extra upward protection, but no complaints with the stock ones.
Nice documentary of the trip, great description and cinematography! How has driving that many road miles been on the beadlocks? Have you had to retorque the bolts often?
My family and I have been wanting to do this trail but afraid we couldn’t fit through the narrow spot. Our Jeep is pretty beefy with 40’s and the wheels have 3” wheel spacers as well. So I’m guessing we’re at least 6 inches wider than a standard JKU. Do you think we would be a prime candidate for the $2,000 recovery!
Hey Brad. Would it be possible to write in the subtitles the meassurements and temperatures in the metric system and Celsius? This way, I wouldn't always have to translate. Thank you very much, and enjoy the ride. Ps. Greetings from Switzerland, Luc
Been following you for awhile now from MD. Love all the videos. Just seen the link and ordered a tshirt. How could I get a patch or sticker for my freedom panels?
Hey yeah Brad. Ok your introducing me to off roading with your great 👍 videos on what I will encounter on some trails in the future. I have to admit some of those down hill sections were your just crawling in low gear. Wow! Brad how the heck am I going to accomplish this? I sat and wondered while watching some of your rigs take a slide here and there. Tires were wet due to a small pass on a river. Made me wonder what happens in the middle of a rain shower. Hmmm? This was a great lesson to someone who basically is on the beach doing my surf fishing. My only worry is don’t get to close to the waters edge. Get stuck in the waters edge and that’s just not fun. So when I watched your video and those hair pin turns on some of those ledges. Wow makes me say I’d rather get stuck in the sand lol. So were planning some time in the late spring to head out to some of these spots I’ve been viewing on Your you tube channel. We’re excited and truly can’t wait for our first overlanding trip other than the beach. Thanks again Brad on another great video!
You don't want to start out on a trail like this, get out and find some easy trial, learn you vehicles capabilities... it will all come the more experience you get.
Excellent video. My son and I are looking to follow some of your same trails. Looks like a lot of fun. Btw, what is the accessory bar that you have on your dash?
How long does it take to go from the visitor’s center (trail head) to the devil’s pocket (the slot) running westbound? Modded JKUR. Heading to the devil’s kitchen campground in two weeks.
