Eliminating Joycon Wiggle

Most Nintendo Switch devices allow for joycon "wiggle." This is there to protect your system in the event of a fall. However, on some systems the wiggle is just too annoying for a finnicky gamer. Here's how to make those Switch joycons be super stiff!

thank god this is common on every switch. I thought that I held the switch a bit too tight and that was the cause of my wobble, but it only does when it's attached to the screen.

i only got my new switch for 2 wks i tend to hold the left joycon so the left joycon left carrying the weight of switch screen and right con causing it to become lose and wabble. not im trying to teach myself to hold the screen instead while im resting my hand or while i adjust myself in best

Mine has been doing it since the day I bought it 3 years ago. It’s a rather common problem, it’s only that it doesn’t get a lot of traction in the community, unlike the drift.

Yes and no. The wiggle is intentional to prevent breakage. It's just the tiniest of variations can turn a tiny wiggle to a lot of wiggle. Another great solution is the Satisfye grip!

I recently got the OLED and noticed this issue with both joycons, the right one only moves a little bit like yours but the left one moves a bit more. It is kinda annoying that this issue exists but it seems like the electrical tape mod could be an improvement. I'll definitely give this a try and see how it works out. UPDATE: So I gave this a shot, and it definitely made a huge improvement! They are harder to remove now but they always stay connected to my Switch now anyway as I have 2 proper controllers. At first the second layer of tape would come right off when reattaching my joycons but what I found really helpful was leaving a little bit of overhang with the second layer that goes inside the rail just a little bit. The tape stays on real good now as it's not grabbing onto the joycons whenever they slide down. It also makes them feel a lot more firm and they don't wiggle or move around at all now unless I force them to. Really good little mod!

Thank you so much man, I found out about this video on a reddit post and it is all I could hope for. I got the OLED - my first switch - very recently and the wiggle on my right joycon was driving me crazy. I guess it wouldn't be a problem for many people but it really was bumming me out (I play handheld like 99% of the time). What you show in the video worked per-fect-ly and only cost me a couple bucks for the tape. Again, thank you so much. Cheers

Thanks for this, you just saved me some money because I've been having this issue for a while and I thought the problem were the locks in the joycons so I orderer a kit with metal locks and replaced the plastic ones that come from factory with the metal ones. That made a small diference, it was harder for the joycons to come loose/disconnect when in handheld however it still happened from time to time and it just frustrated me. I was just about to order a new set of rails for the switch and replace those to try and fix this wiggle issue once and for all (if the issue wasn't the joycons it could only be the rails, at least that was what I thought), and I stumbled upon your video. It's amazing what a couple of pieces of electrical tape can make, issue solved and I can enjoy playing on handheld without the constant anxiety of the joycons disconnecting because of the wiggle.

Best Switch hack ever, totally works! Yes, it's a shame we have to do it in the first place, but it's just a tiny bit of electrical tape and isn't going to leave any marks or residue if you decide to remove it (assuming you use a good quality one).

PSA for anyone with an oled switch: If one of your joycons are wobbly while attached to the switch, It's the joycon. Not the switch rails itself. I tested it with other joycons and they don't wobble. Seems like there's some sort of manufacturing issue with the newest batch of joycons

I have an OLED Switch. There are two tiny little bumps molded into the plastic on the top of the joycons and two tiny bumps molded in the plastic on the bottom of the switch itself where the joycons touch which I believe are there to prevent wiggle, but also they get worn down very easily because they are so small. The little plastic bumps get crushed slightly and then you get a wiggle in the connection. I noticed my right joycon developed this wiggle and then my left one started doing it seemingly after I used the strap attachments one time. The first time i used the straps, i didn't "unlock" them before sliding the joycons on (it was a very tight fit when I did that). i have a theory that the strap attachments caused these little bumps wear out even quicker due to the tight fit.

Wow! Thanks for the tip. Works great! I thought that I had broken the railing system on my Switch when I dropped it some months ago. I'd never noticed the wiggle before that moment. After that, I assumed that it was my fault even though I couldn't see any damage to the console (and the rails) itself, aside from some mild scuffing of the left Joy-Con. So, the saying is true that with (Duct or Electrical) tape, one can fix anything! :)

I just found out the cause of this creaks and wobble upon tearing down the joycon. First thing is that the cause of creaks are the screws holding the back panel of the joycon which are a bit loose. Wobbles is that the bottom of the rails that is attached to the joycon inside do not have any screw which makes them very wobbly, I notice that Nintendo only put one screw on top of the rails just to keep the rails attached to the joycon. Which is a shame for Nintendo's product quality.

I cut a big one and i covered the whole lower part not only the square but until the dot part and don't cut the excess one on the right or you can cut a long one too on the right then stick it there, that way the rail doesn't have a chance to slip the tape away. It worked for me but if this works then great.

Also, aside from just wobbling and feeling weird, this is fine and you can play all the same on the switch right? So, there's no risk of further damage?

Putting the tape on the joycons works as well. It's how I do it these days...but it takes more effort. I put two layers on the top and two layers on bottom. Taking off the joycons is also a no go, you'll have to reapply after. I just leave them on for months at a time.

Ohhhh I see! Firstly, thank you so much for your input! Second, taking the joycons off makes the tape wear off you mean? Is it about the tape itself or about the state of the joycons and keeping them in shape? I tend to play with my joycons off most of the time, but before bed I tend to chuck them back in to play, so I'm guessing this won't be ideal for me!

ALTERNATIVE IDEA: Put 1 piece of electrical tape on the Switch console. Put the other piece of electrical tape on the joycon.

I have this issue on my OLED. The up down wiggle is the worse, if I use my Hyperion Joy Cons I really notice it when using the D Pad, it’s very annoying!

Mine does it on the right red joycon and my left one doesn’t wiggle it just goes up and down like if you was to push down or up it’s annoying but really doesn’t interfere with my gaming but i am looking for a fix
