The most significant external event in this narrow adult life occurred when Darger was nearly 20. A Chicago girl called Eliska ("Elsie" for American slang) Paroubek was abducted and strangled. The murder has never been solved; a few claim Darger was the culprit. Darger certainly cherished a newspaper photograph of the girl, and built a shrine to her memory when he lost the photo. But of course he may just have been touched by the girl's awful fate, which so poignantly recalled his own dark, abandoned childhood. Murderer or not (and most people think not), the adult Darger was indisputably an oddball.

It may look like the grim reaper but is actually the “Pilgrim”, a bronze statue sculpted in 1929 by the great Czech sculptor, Albin Polacek (1879-1965). It was not a woman.

I read one article on that statue. She is represented in mid-stride on her way to that small mausoleum. It is said if she ever gets all the way to the door of the mausoleum, doomsday will be here. There was also a prediction if you look her in the face.

I found a young mans stone in the graveyard my relatives are buried in. It stated “Murdered and Robbed”. For years I tried to find any info about him. Finally, this year I read his story that was featured in a magazine. I realized I couldn’t find anything about him because the stone was hard to read and the church misspelled his first name! Unless something extraordinary happened, their story disappears when other family members die out. Thank you for bringing them back by speaking their names!

But it is sad to think about him , and all our other relatives who are gone. And when we are gone, their memories in us are dead.

I grew up living on a farm about a mile from the city cemetery. As a child, I would walk there just to read the stones and wonder about these people's lives. I still can't visit a cemetery without wondering about the deceased's stories.💔

My great grandparents John and Marie Hora are buried here. Their graves are marked , but buried around them are unmarked graves of four of aunts and uncles who died in 1911 from a house fire and scarlet fever.

I am, so sorry for your loss. I had, a dear friend who passed, on May. 10, 2001 at the young age of 28, from a rare form of a terminal neck cancer. Her mom, who verbally abused my friend, calling her retarted, even though my friend was partially autistic.

The weird, and sad thing is, I actually told my friends mom, if anything happens to your daughter, you are going to regret everything you did to her. And, the day her daughter passed, she at first thought I put some type of curse on her. But, my friends best friend told her, he didn't put anything on you. It's, simple guilt and karma. Granted, if you treated your daughter better, may not have saved her life. But, remember you did tell David, (that is me), that in the very beginning, that that sore on your daughter neck, was just a pimple, and she just wants attention. Ma'am, do all you can, to keep your son's memory alive. My friend, has been with Jesus, for a little over 21 years now. And, I keep her memory alive every day. My youngest niece, who was 3 at the time my friend passed, was the only one who could comfort me. My niece, loved my friend too. May you son RIP, and may my friend Christel RIP. Two "SPECIAL ANGELS" in heaven. You will, be in my daily prayers. God Bless You!!!!!!!

For the Holik family - there is no mystery about why there is no info by Anna's name. Anna was supposed to be buried there and when the stone was first set, her photo was added. However, she is buried in Florida with her husband. So they took out her name since she was not going to be buried there.

We had something like that too. Graves were bought, in 1918 for family when Uncle Louis died of flu, The Uncle Johns wife died in an accidental gas leak, So John bought another 2 spots, as Family did not want wife Elisabeth in the plots. Then John committed suicide (with gas) over loss of wife, and they put him in a spot.. so some spots are left empty, (I suppose), I was there in '52 when Grand ma was buried. Visiting cemeteries used to be a family event.

Thanks. I am excited to see how they turn out. I purchased them back in August....it takes a long time to make them, I guess. They are nice granite stones. When I hear that they are installed, I might go back and do a video on them again, with their new stones....not sure. But--- I was yesterday at another cemetery where that Henry Darger is buried, and I did a whole expose on that guy. (He is a suspect in Elsie's murder). Creepy guy, but the whole artist community and academia is worshiping him now, hmmm. That episode will be out soon. I talk about both sides of his story.

That really was so nice of you to do. My family cemetery is back in the woods unknown to most people. The very first person ever buried there was a young girl that had caught a disease. They were in a wagon train. They buried her where she died and never had a tombstone. Uncle Harry ordered her a stone out of the little bit of money he had left. We still can find no information on her or her relatives. It’s really sad.

@@FacesoftheForgotten There are 2 mass graves in the area. One is in Homewood Illinois formed in 1995 when we got hit with a heatwave. Many people died and were buried there. The cemetary is off of Halsted and I-80 right before you see the quarries. (those are scary). The other one is in Merrillville Indiana and is the final resting place of the remains of the passengers on the Eagle Flight that crashed in Roselawn, IN on 10/31/94 when we had that unexpected snow storm. There is a book 'UNHEEDED WARNING' about it. The crash site in Roselawn is very eerie. I have been there twice. There is no sound or wind within a mile of the site. I've been there twice. I also have a connection to the coroner's office. The place is haunted. EDIT: I used to work at Equitable in their building on the river and Michigan Ave. where the Eastland tragedy happened.

My grandparents (John and Thelma) are at rest here. My grandpa’s family (Novak) was from Bohemia, our family name is on a memorial in Europe too. 1918-1920 Spanish flu?

My father’s dad’s family came from Czechoslovakia during WWII. They settled in a patch town in sw PA outside of Pittsburgh, where we remain. My aunt still lives in the house they moved into. When they arrived they spoke no English. Worse, they sounded German. They were prejudiced against because of it. They couldn’t find work, with 11 surviving children, they were in extreme poverty. They sent my grandfather to school as the oldest son to learn English. By the 4th grade they felt he had learned enough English and was made to get work. He worked as a small child in a local textile mill clearing jams on the needles. They made rugs. They used children for the task because their tiny fingers could get in there to do it. He saw children lose fingers. He would sleep on the floor of the mill and walk home on Fridays to give his mom, my great-grandma, his pay to support the family. My Pop-Pop spoke broken English until the day he died. My great-grandparents had 11 surviving children. That was out of 14 children. They had to reuse names because they only knew so many American names. They re-named nearly all of the children that were already born when they had arrived, too. It was important to them to have American names so they could find work. To not be prejudiced against. His younger sisters all spoke perfect English with no discernible accents. They were allowed to attend school until graduation. His one brother also had an accent like him. I also know, but not the reason why, there was a split in the family upon their arrival in the states. My Pop-Pop’s aunts and uncles had split the family. One side retained our original Czech last name and my side took a new one. My Pop-Pop would never discuss anything about our history no matter how much he was prodded. Everyone used to get me to ask him questions. I was the first grandchild and was his favorite, lol. The little I said here was all I could ever get from him. Some of my family could be in that cemetery. Just thought I’d share this. Thank you for remembering our people. What you’re doing is important and valued.

I think your comments beginning at the 5:04 mark reminds me of how important friends and especially family are. We may not ever be in a history book but your friends and family keep your memory alive. In our family, our grandparents and great grandparents are legends. They were never famous or anything but we appreciate so much about them. If you have children tell them about their grands and great grands, etc Keep that memory going. It actually surprises me how many people don't know about their own grandparents or great grands or family history.

They did not leave without a legacy...many left generations of family that followed and are still spreading...so in many ways they are not forgotten. And its not always what you leave when you go, but what you gave to others while you were alive. I am childless with no siblings nor nieces or nephews, but I try to make a difference in my community and for my church family and to those whom I care for and who care for me. I have put stones up for 16 people in my family, with the help of my dad, two aunts, and relations of our deceased, to keep them locatable and remembered. They died during wars or pandemics or the depression, and many just had sandstone rocks marking their resting places. I never knew any of them, (great great great grandparents, etc) but knew of them thru doing my genealogy, and now they are written up in a family history book and marked with granite. These people whose memorials you see, may be remembered in many ways, but just are not visited often. Researching one's genealogy keeps many ancestors alive to their families many times like ours did, as well. Good work, and I enjoy your videos. I am the executive director of a history museum. Have worked there 26 years and held the post faithfully, and tried to be as helpful as possible to our many visitors each year. God bless.

That soldier in the picture was in a WW1 uniform , that sinking was three years after the Titanic sinking in 1912, 1915 was the year the Lusitania sunk from the German U-boat. My great grandfather had the same uniform.

My grandmother worked at the Bohemian National Cemetery in the ‘40s and ‘50s as a gardener, planting and caring for flowers on the graves. Both grandparents were born in Bohemia, raised their sons in Cicero, and later lived in Stickney.

As I imagine someone has pointed out below, the Cermak assassination was in 1933; my girlfriend's parents were Czech, and it was a major tragedy in their community...

Thank you for the video. These graves and faces are especially interesting to see because here in the Czech republic many old graves get sold and the bones are either moved into a mass grave or cremated. Some graveyards keep 100+ years old graves, but a lot of them sell the plots after 10+ years if nobody claims them.

It’s incredible the quality of the the burials.. early 1900’s and the photographs are so impeccable to be able to see them clearly still is just incredible!! Thanks for sharing.. yes.. that one dark statuary is very creepy!

So kind of you to get tombstones for Elsie's parents! I have a book about Albin Polasek written by his wife with lots of photos of his sculptures. The “Pilgrim Mother” is in it. The description: “This life-sized figure was made as a private memorial for the mother of a Bohemian family in Chicago and stands in the National Bohemian Cemetery there. Keeping in mind the woman who died, Polasek made a woman pilgrim nearing the end of her long journey. She is heavily robed with drapery such as only Polasek could make, and she supports her weary steps with a staff. He spent much time over the face, endeavoring to capture just the right type of aged benevolence.” The picture in the book is not at all creepy! You can clearly see her face. What makes the current statue so creepy is erosion. I wish someone could fix it. What a great tour. I've been there many times. Many of my deceased family members are there.

What a very sad sad story and I do hope you raise enough money to give Eliskas parents gravestones. That makes me feel really really good. Such a wonderful thing you are doing. The world is so blessed to have you to do this wonderful thing for the Forgotten. Oh so generous. You truly are the best. In the 1900s - 1940s especially remember there was the Spanish Fly (didnt come from Spain tho as I am sure people know) and TB, Smallpox, measles and syphilis were predominant back in those days and medical science was just starting I think to make progress in medicine. So many lives in those ugly years. To have a kidnapped and murdered child was horrendous. So sad they never found the killer. Breaks my heart. Thanks for the tour of the Church. Secret door, that is a tad funny. Yes one of those doors that go down to the place where the crematorium is. I've seen it done twice with people I know and of course recently with Prince Phillip and our lovely Queen.

All of these beautiful children, such short lives yet loved so deeply by their families. I can't help but get a sickening in my gut at the thought of how much pain their losses caused. I hope I never have to experience it.

The "ashes" of a person are actually called "cremains". The trap door is where the casket is brought up from below for the service and then lowered to be taken where they are to be buried or cremated. Beautiful chapel.

National archives or state death certifificates would give the parents names and cause of death ....just an idea after doing much genealogy. Nice video, beautiful mortuary and statuary art!
