@Queen Bee you read my mind I was thinking the same thing that they should bring out a ground penatrating radar to locate and move the remains to a proper spot and put in a new headstone
Can't wait to find out this mystery. If their bodies were dug up and moves to that wooded area an reburied thw headstones would bw above their graves. Obviously thats not the case. Looks like maybe the bodies weren't moved and headstones were just thrown in there and discarded. That is so disrespectful and sad. 😔
So very sad to see people tossed away like that. I'm in Colorado and the "oldest" cemetery in Denver, Riverside, and Cheesman Park are linked. Cheesman was a cemetery and the city wanted the land for a park, so they started moving bodies and markers to Riverside. At first, they were very meticulous and the whole situation devolved when the cost started to rise. There are several mass graves at Riverside (a little marker that just says, "Colorado Children's Home," just brought me to tears), but they even abandoned that effort and the city just paved over hundreds of graves that still remain. I couldn't imagine that happening to one of my relatives.
It's so sad. It's disgusting that development can move the dead. Cemeteries are sacred. Where i used to live there's a building off a bluff and when renovations were done on the grounds human bones were found. It's said back in the day they knew it was a cemetery and supposedly moved the bodies. It's just wrong!
I believe they moved quite a few for a London high-speed railway when it was being built in 2017, 60,000 bodies to be exhumed, St James Gardens, 1790 to 1853. There was a campaign to stop it , 500 trees for the chop too, phase 1 at Eustan Station went through, to be all finished by 2026. Money always comes before people, always has. Sad.
after watching these types of videos... it makes me realize you're dead and no longer are important to society... why spend 15k on a funeral? and you shouldn't be... your body wont contribute anything dead... life goes own, even if you don't lol... that respect to the dead bs is nothing but a ploy for the govt to make money, why should a dead persons family have to pay a death tax and etc? maybe there is a heaven maybe there's a hell... what does the body care about either tho? that being said... it doesn't matter what happens to a body during death, they're dead and don't know anything...
This is why I’m here. Love the unknown. They deserve to be seen and remembered. I think you’ve found a real graveyard of those from years and years ago.
My great great great grandfather is buried in a little graveyard in the woods. The churxh i've learned burned down around 1903 or 1904. The was left to be forgotten. People built a home next to the graveyard. The homeowners took it upon themselves to mow the grass(?) and weed whacked where needed. These are good human beings. We learned who we could tell, were veterans. Every Memorial day we place flags on the graves. A total opposite of this terrible situation you exposed Ron.
These graves need to be reported because they have family members and there were other cemeteries in Cook County that did something like this. God bless their souls and all the ones who are misplaced.
Love your channel so interesting. Those poor people that thought they were buried and resting in peace. I’m from Bristol UK and we had a cemetery that was privately owned called Arnos Vale. The owner let it get run down and decided to sell it to developers. The council stepped in and made a compulsory purchase order. It is amazing they’ve done to the place. There are volunteers that help to run it. There is so much history attached to the cemetery. They do tours explaining the different types of head stones the people buried there, wild life talks. My husbands old home used to back on to the cemetery and he would get deer in his garden, which is unusual as it’s in the middle of the city! If you get the chance look it up, maybe use it as an example to save this cemetery. Keep up the good work you are doing.
Could the numbered cylinders be marking pauper graves, looks like they are upright with the numbers up. I believe you covered another cemetery by a hospital which had numbered markers. Development in the area may have diverted water to cause the area to flood. Seems if the markers were just dumped for disposal they would be piled with no sequence.
I know that the cemetery some of my family is buried in have markers like that at every corner. It's different lots/areas. It makes it easier for the cemetery to use to find certain grave etc. It doesn't hurt to ask questions at the office which I did 😊
No way those circular numbered stones aren't graves when they're lined up so closely--perfectly for grave next to grave. They have to be paupers' graves. It's a big town with an old cemetery and the dates include World War 1 (1914-1918), when many citizens went to join the fight and/or fight with/for relatives, and a major pandemic (1918) when whole families could have died with no one to pay for the graves. And that's NOT counting the Tuberculosis place.
Should get like history section of an university behind this. Montrose cemetery board should have records but if somebody covered up things years ago, which may have easily been done, its gonna be hard to prove. Maybe like ground radar thru the university could see graves? Good blessings to all. R.i.p
@@RockinStacy i found same funeral director family has owned cemetery since 1902. They maybe covered it up. Grave stones in woods are 1920s so there should be records unless state government is crooked to. I've found some living descendants hope ron starts there and not with funeral home cause they all family. If anything should get a news crew in on it. I have a feeling its a cover up job. I've sent Ron info on hagop kirishian family line.
I'm so happy you're going to follow up. Thank Briton for his courage and knowledge into this nightmare. Another great video just in time for the Halloween season.. because that's pretty much where it belongs, under Halloween. What a mess. I'm praying the bodies are found and someone cleans that place up. I'm heart sick at the amount of desecration of graves. Thank you for this jaw dropping video.
This was such a fascinating episode, who knew this was hidden back there? It’s so sad that their graves were disrespected in such a way. I hope more comes to light on this, and hopefully someday the deceased will be reunited with their headstones.
I forgot on my previous msg that my grandfather was a civil war veteran. He was wounded twice, once at Gettysburg and Antietam. He held the rank of Sgt Major at the end of the war. I am very proud of my grandpa.
A little insight. Real Satanist use an upsidedown pentagram. Usually with a goats head intertwined somehow. A point up pentagram is similar to an upright cross. It is not evil. So when it's used like the picture here, you can bet it's people who have no idea. And those who follow the pagan nature religion really find that kind of thing horribly offensive and feel the symbol is desecrated by those practices. Just some information and insight. Please don't make this into a negative discussion.
I've also seen episodes of people finding abandoned mausoleums. Caskets laying out, and some bones laying around. It's horrible. I don't understand how mausoleums get abandoned.
@@EmilyTienne I guess you don’t seem to realize that this is a video about a forgotten cemetery and how sad that is. Someone always seems to think they need to interject political views to get people off the subject and start a political argument when it’s not the subject at hand. There are other forums where they can argue away to their content. And I didn’t change the subject, the first person to enter a political post did, so don’t blame me. You are just a troll here promoting politics and trying to carry on the argument 😡
Extremely angry!! I've spent 20 years doing family research. About 7 minutes into this video you will see the headstone of Jacob Herbst 1882-1923. He's a lost member of my family. His name was actually Jakob Herbst and he was born in Mackenbach, Bavaria. He was married to Rosie Ulrich, who, with their son Jacob and her brother Sam Ulreich, are buried at the REAL Montrose Cemetery. Jakob was a musician. He was a violin finisher by trade. He immigrated to this country in 1910 and was naturalized in 1919. His family lived on Bissell Street in Chicago. He suffered great loss in his life, loosing at least 2 sons at very young ages, himself passing at a young age. And today, as we all see, his suffering continues nearly a century after his passing, being forgotten and thrown away in an unkept area of discarded memories. This absolutely breaks my heart! Tomorrow, I will be making some calls to find out how and why his headstone is there. But most importantly, where HIS location actually is. He had a son that passed in 1983, and I will be starting there to find out who would have been responsible for the laying to rest of these poor people. Jakob....you are NOT forgotten; in memory, thanks to this youtube video....you have family again. Rest in peace.
Wow! You know "some palms were greased" in this venture! The bodies are almost ALWAYS left where they were originally buried, & the markers discarded, paperwork is "edited" or simply lost, & when the people responsible are questioned, there's a whole lot of shoulder shrugging ...hopefully some of the relatives of these people can start inquiries into a possible Montrose Cemetary plot map? Or cemetary boundary markers? Maybe they could also start a few chats with the neighbors who may have dug up bodies/coffins while building their homes?
Wow. This is amazing, tragic and so sad. I hope there is a follow up on what happened there. Brittan's knowledge on this , and history in general is astounding. What a blessing to be able to spend the day with someone so knowledgeable and learn so much.Thank you for traveling through the woods and sticky thorns to bring us this episode.
Oh my gosh! My old boyfriend and I as teenagers use to travel the railroad tracks here back in the mid 70's to go see this cemetery. He had told me about it and called it "The Lost Cemetery" .....it was scary. I can't believe it's still there! I remember when they tore up the tracks to make a bike path. Funniest thing is that I was just telling my son-in-law about this place a few days ago and then your video popped up!
Have the gravestones been in the same spots this whole time or does it look different in the video? I've been here with my friends in the last couple years!
Ok fellas, great job showing us all the questionable refuse…. But the leather face with scary booing was too much for my weak kneed self. Lol. I loved hearing about the Snells. I have Snell kin living in the area there….so I will be making some inquiries. Take care, see you soon, I hope.
Oh I just got a sick feeling. My great grandparents are buried there at Montrose as are most of my grandfathers family. My grandparents had bought lots there as well but wanted to be by their only daughter who had lots in Mt. Emblem so those graves were never going to used. When my grandfather died, his cousin was saying she and her husband tried to get graves there but they were all taken so they could not be in that cemetary by her parents. We gave her my grandparents lots and that was 25 years ago. I noticed when I went to the cemetery there were newer graves just next to that oriental section. Maybe they were dug up and those graves resold.
Hey Gang!! Last Sunday we were going to carve pumpkins n I detailed the tools on the table to use for carving n YT deleted my posts!!! If you haven't joined the Facebook page I find it very interesting. Unusual grave markers and interesting stories. A great "umbrella" link to the UTube channel.
From google images it’s fairly obvious to me the area with new house is the site for the removed head stones and the developer even used the original roads in the cemetery by the Satelite images but that’s to obvious I’d be thinking the person or persons responsible had never thought Satalite images would ever be a thing
@@redmage777 I know but just imagine the people in houses and they find human bones under their house or in their gardens, how will that effect them. I do feel that as these people have been buried, the least that can be done is that the grounds are looked after and not ploughed over and houses built on their bones 💀💀💀
I looked up Montrose Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois/Cook County, and there seems to be a wonderful depiction of graves. I believe in the hunt you had with a man who showed you many discarded head stones. When will justice be found???
I used to dig graves in a few remote towns that were once boom towns. At one, the markers were once mostly timber. When the town declined, a fire took out most of the markers, and another fire later at the Council building took out the burial records. There is now around 300 known locations, but 2500 burials. If I was digging a grave in an older area I always had to have a back up location in case someone was already in there - which wasn't uncommon. At another cemetery, the whole old indigenous area had become lost and overgrown, and was nothing more than a rumour. I tried to get in there many times but it was just too thick.
Here are your answers. The stones were discarded cause the land was sold off to developers. The graves were left because as you said they became part of mother earth & the homes were built on the land.
Very interesting. The gravestones seem to be in good shape for the most part. Readable anyway. Another Chicago mystery. Those folks probably voted too.
There's a real old cemetery in Southern Illinois near lake Carlyle. You have to take a path and then all of a sudden there's this old cemetery from the 1700 and 1800s untouched. I haven't Been there in over 20 years but I would love it if we could find that cemetery and clean it up... I live about 4 hours from it. Springdale Cemetery in Peoria...theres headstones laying in gully around Cemetery
So what if someone visits Montrose with a list of those names , then you would know if their graves are still listed there ? Or are houses sitting where those graves should have been ? Then we would know where the blame lies for these forgotten folks ...if there are houses on the grounds where the bodies should be buried then 9 times out if 10 , the bodies were left to Mother Earth and those headstones and markers were thrown back there. Have Montrose show you where they are buried now ...
Apparently it's an old dumping ground for murdered X-mas trees. 2:00 Branches of the Forgotten... Houses developed over graves that were "supposedly" moved? Wouldn't that make a great movie by Spielberg in the 80's. If all the markers were discarded they wouldn't mostly be upright sticking out of the ground and the promenate head stones would be in a pile, noone is carrying heavy stones like that and setting them every so often in the woods that's too much work for someone doing something so lazy and inconsiderate. I am a Land Surveyor by trade and you can have plot markers close to each other depending on the plot's dimensions. Either way it's a mess out there. Fun fact = A graveyard is connected to and on the property of a church, a cemetery is not.
Historic Aerials shows the area now covered by the housing development as part or directly connected to Montrose Cemetery. Roadways are clearly present as part of the cemetery as late as the 1970's.
Ive been there ages ago! It was in the middle of the night with a bunch of friends who told me about it but I didn't believe it until they brought me there. For some reason I remember it not being that far from Niles??? Again it was long ago - but for some reason I remember it being Jewish gravestones.
I think the t.b. sanitarium, which was progressive in operation as opposed to prison like, was closed in the 70s. I read at the library that almost 700 were cremated in the boiler house with the tall brick smoke stack, which is connected by tunnel to the morgue which is now the basement of the park's athletic building. The Peterson Park parsal originally an orchard and nursery which sourced many of the trees to replant after the Chicago fire was donated by old man Peterson to the state or county for the sanitarium after his wife died of tuberculosis. When it closed it was suppose to be privately developed as a shopping center but a community group rallied to ensure it was designated for public use. Great discovery! I'd love to see more of that quintessential Chicagoan, Brittan! Great stories and bringing all of this research and perspective together. I've come across parts of livestock at Labagh when I was younger but attributed it to those practicing Santaria.
Could try n plot out the locations of stones etc. with GPS and note the direction they face etc. and plot it all out on paper. . . then you could maybe get an idea of the layout and make some sense of the place? Just an idea.
If those houses are actually buried on those Graves from way back then. I hope those that are buried there are haunting those people that live in those homes because you do not bury homes on a sacred ground without being haunted. 🙏🏻 God please Bless.. all those that are buried in those woods and have been discarded.. 🙏🏻
If i were the bulldozer operator who was hired to do excavations for new homes to be built, and came upon headstones where am to excavate, i would NOT take as much as one bucketful of dirt out there. Every headstone has a story, and someone loved them some time in their lives.
is it possible they were buried in a rented plot, that had to be re-paid for after a certain number of years. when no relatives could be found to pay for it or they couldn`t afford too, the graves were vacated for new burials and the headstones discarded in the woods.
This was a very interesting coverage of forgotten/abandoned graves... Some of those markers could have been pushed over due to extreme water flow .... I like to think that although these deceased people seemed "forgotten" .... They are in Heaven and not in pain or sadness anymore. Thank you for caring, this is really nice of you to remember the "forgotten" 🙏
Our neighbors once had a small family cemetery on their land and turned their cattle loose to trample it and knock down the stones rubbing against them. My Dad couldn't stand it so he offered to repair the stones and put up fencing around the graves. They didn't care so that's what Dad did. It's now been bulldozed for subdivision homes since my Dad's death. I don't know who the family was but it's sad.
The situation definitely needs to be investigated. It appears criminal activity may have taken place in this situation. In N.Y. State when you purchase a burial plot, you are buying property that is deeded property. I don’t know how it works in the area this took place, but in N.Y. State you just don’t simply move a cemetery.
I think you are right, it is a combination of pauper graves and headstones and markers dumped there from the clearing of the land for the houses. Why would you try moving graves on land you had not developed yet, only need to do it for what you are going to develop, so dump the headstones in the woods. Those markers are interesting, that cemetery certainly didn't look like a quickly thrown together thing, there just has to be some records somewhere, even photos, of that area. Wonder if you could take some of those grave marker numbers, and actually figure out where they were originally, by finding undisturbed markers. A lot of work for I don't know what, but I can tell you, no way I would buy a house anywhere near there! Even during broad daylight, those woods look totally creepy, you seriously couldn't make them look scarier. Poor people.
Well here's an idea maybe some of these wealthy people that want something to do with their their time and money would like to leave a legacy. Perhaps they could form a not-for-profit society that would like to clean up this cemetery and find out what really is going on here. And maybe a few Developers need to be looked into.
Nothing about this area is right. How do you get it investigated properly and things put to rights as far as is able? As a genealogist this just really breaks my heart, as a Christian, even more so. I'm wondering if Montrose Cemetery has records of where these people are supposed to be if this is not part of the original cemetery. And if they are still in Montrose cemetery, why are headstones laying around in the woods, just thrown away?
How big are the small round ones with a number on them? They may be marking individual lots. In the cemetery that I work at we have single spaces areas where there was a small square marker (ours are about 2" by 2") with a number on it to indicate the lot number within the block. Every cemetery is laid out differently mine is laid out in Blocks which are composed of lots that are then made up of spaces. Most lots have between 3 to 12 grave spaces each but I do have a few blocks that each lot is one individual grave space, it is those blocks that have the small square numbered markers. When a headstone was set they would usually remove the numbered marker but not always.
There didn't used to be a "back wall" in Montrose Cemetery. You could walk back into the abandoned area from the cemetery. It was overgrown, so I don't think many people did walk in. I grew up in Bryn Mawr right there. People went in there to drink and stuff in the 1970s and 1980s. A lot of the stones were broken and in disarray already at that time. I think someone may have relocated them in years past. They absolutely built those houses over graves. In the 80s I went in there a few times during the day. I always thought it was so weird because the graves weren't that old... 50-60 years, and already forgotten. That developer must have paid somebody off to be able to build those houses there. The last time I was in Chicago a year ago, I drove over there and saw the houses. I saw someone in the yard of one of the houses that I know is absolutely over graves. I got out with my dog to talk to the lady. She was nice-- everyone likes my dog. I asked her if they told her that this was/is a cemetary. She said "no" no one said anything about that. They told her it had been forest preserve land.
I am at a loss for words! The only dignity these deceased individuals have is FOTF visiting this location. Otherwise, they were potentially tossed aside like yesterday's refuse. May G-d have mercy on their souls.
That was fantastic,I'm in England have just watched it .....How sad to discard headstones etc like that 😭, I hope something is done about this now.Ron and Britan thank you for bringing this to people's attention , and I bet it's not the first time???.Thanks Ron.🎃💀
If the bodies of tuberculosis victims, and paupers were cremated, they could have been buried very close together. There should be records somewhere of names that match the numbers on the cylinders. Please keep researching this terrible situation.
How sad to see, no kind of respect for the dead shame on those who were part of this Destruction smh 😪 I hope something can be done with This place just sad.😔
This was a very mysterious and sad video. I love all the local and historical information Britain shared. It could be rather easily checked out I would think if they (the cemetery) could agree to do the ground radar. I hope all you bright sleuths will be able to get this mystery solved. Great video Ron.
You can find the lost Cemetery in LaBaugh Woods on Find a Grave. These graves they say are suppose to be buried in Montrose Cemetery, but unfortunately they were left behind 😟
@@FacesoftheForgotten Who would you email about this - I’m over in the UK but think this is awful. These people paid to be buried n a cemetery not under a house or someone’s roses in the garden. It just not right.
They discarded the bodies and then tossed the markers and the cemetery plot ID's in order to cover up the fact that they illegally removed the bodies. Look at where many of these people were from and then figure that they have no next of kin here in the USA, or if they are, do not live nearby. The markers would not be moved unless the bodies were moved. Follow the money.
So I grew up in Saugunash (I never could spell it) off of Hollywood. I remember when they were building those houses there and my little brother my sister and I walked past and seen coffins piled up, falling apart and just awful. I remember when it was train tracks there and now it’s paved for jogging. Those houses built there are ALWAYS for sale. One of the ladies there told my mother that since they moved in, they had lots of unexplained phenomena and something would terrorize her kids. She had been there less than 8 months and would not stay in the home when her husband was not home, and everyone slept in the same room at night. It’s so sad to see developers have disregard for those that had passed. They also buried a lot of those who haven’t had visitors recently in a mass grave my mother told me.
Amazing comment....do you remember what year this was and where they had the coffins stacked?.....ive heard this same thing from another person that grew up around there and also you are right about the houses always up for sale.......I am brittan and your comment may become very important......i cant talk too much right now but Ron is gettin threats and venom from certain individuals over there that came out swingin and just want this to go away and pretend it did not happen.....i feel in my mind and heart that once the smoke settles the wrongs will be righted and those forgotten souls laid to rest there will be remembered and honored
@@itsthe773guero5 the coffins were stacked towards the back of the cemetery right before the clearing area and then you have the end where the street meets and you enter in. I haven’t been back there for a while….many many years, but I remember there was a bench and a small hill and you could walk over it and enter the cemetery at any time, there was no fence then. Not sure if there is one built now. My stepfather is buried there too, he passed away I believe in 2010. It is a very beautiful cemetery but it is so sad what was done to make way for these new houses. I do not believe though any were actually built on the cemetery for I do not think it honestly went back that far, but then again when you first enter the street that takes you there to the left there are houses built and they go further back a little than the street does. As for the time this happened, I’ll have to ask my mom again I want to say late 90s maybe very early 2000s we seen it. I’ll let you know as soon as I ask my mom. I remember though being younger and knowing the cemetery was so close, literally almost up to the old railroad tracks, being scared at night that zombies would come 😂
And I am almost certain it was part of montrose cemetery. I don’t recall a small or private cemetery being there. The railroad tracks were huge and full of rocks, if you follow it down going south, you’ll come to the Pulaski (?) river. But definitely the cemetery did not go past the railroad tracks.
@@itsthe773guero5 so I googled a map of the cemetery and where I used to live. Like I said, off of kosher and Hollywood, it’s a dead end street. There is a little hilly wooded area at the end of the block, we used to walk up there….maybe no more than 1000 feet from the entrance was the tracks. Looking at the map now and the new houses…..the new houses are built BEFORE where the tracks were….old tracks were after where the houses now stand.
No Ron, no lost cemetary. Those stones were discarded there. Looks like Montrose cemetery found a better use for their plots. Either sold off the land to developers or resold the individual plots.
Hi Ron, I was excited to see where you were for this video. Your friend spoke about the old tuberculosis center. Back in 2007 I did my masters internship at North River Mental Health which is located on the grounds. It was a neat place. I also at that time lived on Montrose Ave. right by the lake. Love your content!
