Elitism in the Historical European Martial Arts Community?

Some say HEMA is elitist. Naturally We are too far above the groveling insects of the sword swinging peasantry to even dignify such a plebeian insinuation with a riposte, which shall remain confined to the feeble minds of doubters.
Seriously though, this is a worthwhile topic to discuss. Obviously any club / school / sport / interest group has its share of elitism, and where are humans there is drama. But is there more of it than usual in a community that relies on de-discovering and interpreting historical sources? Is there perhaps a certain amount of gatekeeping at work? Is there any dismissal of other armed martial arts or sword-related activities (Kendo, Kenjutsu, Kali, SCA, LARP, etc)?
No short answer, I'll just tell you about my personal experience and opinion on the topic in this video. While showing you some nice, relaxing footage of a trip to the beach (more like ragged shore) to balance any hard sentiments anyone might be having. :)

They don't say that you have as many opinions as people in the room for nothing, it's just plain true. Problem is often those few people who simply cant accept that people don't share "their" opinion. I myself like to think I'm open minded, i will listen to peoples opinion and try to take a honest look at their arguments instead of outright condemning anything that is opposite or against my own opinion. That said, there is also a point that he (Skal) made concerning professional vs hobby practitioners. If you are indeed looking to enter tournaments then you do benefit from a more strict interpretation of the rules and ways of H.E.M.A. and may advocate it. If your just a casual practitioner, you might prefer a more looser style then those. Both are arguably valid ways of practice. And this exists in every martial art you can practice. I personally did a variant of Thai Kickboxing, and while my technique was decent i had no interest in doing it professionally, so my practice in its was for fun. Someone who would do tournaments would be much more intense with getting every technique as best as possible.

I am reminded of the Swedish sports association's attitude towards youth sports in general. They noticed there was a problem with people quitting at around the age of 15ish because the clubs focused too much on pushing towards elite level training, and the vast majority of people were just not interested in that. Especially at such a young age. I can also attest to this myself. A few years ago though, they started pushing hard to change the culture to allow more "casual" forms of sport practice, and I believe it is working quite well as far as I know.

@@ninodino444 It's not about aiming for mediocrity. It's about understanding that you don't have to practice a sport at an elite level to practice that sport at all. Practicing a sport is very good for you in many ways, yet the percentage of the population that actually wants to do it at a professional level is not that big. To discourage everyone else from participating is not only elitist, it is bad for the overall health of the population (this is one of the reasons the sport association gave for intervening). Society literally wouldn't work if everyone was an elite athlete. It's important to allow people to devote their lives to other things without shoving them away from something they enjoy, especially when it is also healthy for them. Besides, what club would say no to an increase in membership fees?

Historical combat and historical societies have a great deal to learn from each other. It's interesting that the HEMA Coalition's manifesto says that its preference for primary sources isn't dogmatic, and that it encourages members to go their own way in their studies, and it even has a source database that includes the Viking Sagas. And the HEMA Alliance's bylaws have a Freedom of Study Policy which empowers members to study as they wish, and says that the treatise-based curriculum is not a mandate. And ARMA says that it seeks to understand the totality of forgotten weapon skills, through a cross comparison of documents. The snobbery is a feature of individual members and clubs. It is NOT in the organizations' core beliefs and doctrines.

I remember back in the late 90's, early 00's where there were the "Martial Arts Wars" where people wanted to assert that their art of choice was the "superior one". I dealt with this a lot when doing kickboxing, but it was all in good fun. People would have a go at each other, they would assert themselves, let's say, in sparring but at the end of the day everyone would feed of each other (that's a meme in the extreme sports world) and have a good time. When you were discussing how to view and interpret techniques I was reminded of my recent studies into stoicism through the lens of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations. One of the key disciplines of stoicism is discipline of perception, that, viewing the world as objectively as possible through our flawed perception. Understanding that our perception is flawed and influenced can be the first step towards understanding something new. Also, on the subject of claiming victory through flawed technique, I remember when I cross studied with two Kali expert as a boxer, and after a bout of sparring, we all sat and drank tea and water and discussed exactly why we chose particular positioning, movement, strikes, grappling, or other techniques. We would break down the round and go "That wasn't a good decision, what can we do that is better?" or "this was an excellent choice in the moment, but it risks leaving your back exposed." While I had encountered coaches and trainers who would work with you one on one and do something similar, this kind of group discussion and breakdown hadn't been exposed to me yet, and it's something I try to include in my training to this day.

There are really great people in the HEMA community who are welcoming and friendly, but there really does seem to be an over abundance of elitism and gatekeeping with an extreme amount of derogatory toxicity. Just look at the Historical European Martial Arts discord group and what they say about us HEMA adjacent RU-vidrs with large followings (although they've been trying to do better recently). There seems to be a dedicated hate group in many HEMA circles that go out of their way to trash me for, what seems to be, my more casual approach to HEMA. Many claiming I don't even practice HEMA (gatekeeping) because I don't do it the way they think I should. So again, thanks for raising this issue.

And then you will have elitists, especially in the astrophotography part of the hobby, that can't help but be unpleasant and really rude to others because they don't have the best (and priciest) equipment and what not. Like I legitimatly got a comment from a guy like that, telling me " why are you even bothering with astrophotography if you don't have the financial means to get this kind of equipment ?". Others would just look down on you because you don't do it the "proper" way. So yeah, you can probably find lots of similar patterns in any hobby. Better ignore them and continue having fun and interact with more pleasant people.

TLDR: this is one of my favorite analysis yet I appreciate the level of reflection here. I think it can be a total bummer when people from our communities represent us in a way that hurts others, and it’s important for us to have moments of sharing our experiences of that. I play music for a living, and like you said, every community has this issue. Without leaning into it in a good faith effort the practice will quickly stop reaching new people who might have really enjoyed it or been exceptionally good. I took up swinging a Longsword because it really made by spine feel great; lots of endorphin release. Pursuit of HEMA is my effort to adopt the proper biomechanics in order to avoid injury, i.e., I did not want my new-found hobby to “join the other side” and become yet another way to hammer my aging body. I’m all about answering the “why do it this way” question. Like most other hobbies, HEMA is an anachronism; it’s not necessary for everyday life, unless it is the outlet that allows one’s body to function normally and without pain. Yes, stretching and a regular workout regime are important as well, but all work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy. IMO the elitism that we see is just people who need to convince themselves that they are “doing it right.” In a sport that grew from a life-and-death necessity, if in the 21st century you are not getting creamed by every opponent, and your not hurting yourself or others, then your probably doing it right enough. It’s only a hobby. Let’s not take ourselves too seriously.

We run a HEMA club here and we get lots of fantasy oriented newcomers as well. You featured one of our early experiments with the Japanese kusarigama (Champ Archer's video). Heck.. I was one of them once. HEMA is an eye opener to me as well as a lot of our members. We operate on the motto "Try it and see for yourself" because it's hard to talk people to believe until they try it. I think trying to explain it even makes us sound like elitist a-holes. Many just left because it was not as fantasy as they imagined and reality is often disappointing. Some stayed with us. Our national wide medieval enthusiast community is small and we can't be picky about who we 'play' with. I think it's better we stick together rather than alienate people.

Great video! I’ve definitely experienced gatekeeping to the extent that I’ve witnessed schisms occur in clubs, and been shunned by some for not choosing sides when you have friends on both sides, which I find most unfortunate. Something you didn’t touch on is how extremely this can effect a HEMA-ist’s ability to be a part of the community. What I mean by this is that it can lead to threats and real barriers for someone who doesn’t agree, or refuses to choose sides. It can also quell exciting opportunities where say, multiple clubs would combine their efforts to create a broader community of events that would be amazing for everyone, etc… Your approach to HEMA mirrors mine closely - openness to ideas, inclusion of various related hobbies, open-ended about subjective aspects, while being pragmatic about objective aspects. Yea I walked into my photography class in college and said “this is stupid let’s just photoshop the image we want and call it a day” and they were all like wow thanks so much I can’t believe how stupid we were to enjoy the art of photography with cameras like closed minded idiots! Thanks for improving our art and hobby by getting rid of it all together! That’s you. That’s what you’re saying. There’s a reason they kicked you outX

Started HEMA this year after seeing you video for some years. It's nice and fun and people are really nice. I like it because there is no pressure of being there all the time, I really like getting into HEMA at my own rythme. I think I will engage more by the time, but later. Nice video !

I've seen this prevalent in sword selling and making groups too, there's always that one or five guys who knows everything about everything. The most recent claim I've seen is a sword isnt a real sword unless it follows exacting historical guidebooks and as such, no modernly designed sword can possibly be a real sword. This is ignoring the obvious fact that weapons, armour and fighting styles evolved through history in relation and retaliation to opposing forces, culture and even fashion. Admitting this would forfeit control of the discussion though so... More on topic regarding HEMA, I think on principle, new styles and techniques should be acceptable as much as historical forms (with a respectful not that HEMA stands for something particular and this should never be forgotten or disregarded), as we now have access to incredible levels of documentation from not just our own histories but other people's styles too, and as I said before, styles develop in relation to their surroundings and outside influences. Martially speaking the last thing you want to do is fight against someone who's got a broad array of skills designed to pull your own style apart while you have nothing but a basic textbook knowledge that hasn't changed in 600 years and no experience on a battlefield to test it out. And let's be honest with ourselves, if you dont come away with at least a few bruises you haven't tested a single thing you've learned. A lot of "experts" in a lot of groups therefor need to simmer down.

"We have trained in different ways. Let's train together and see what we learn." This is the genesis and lifeblood of martial arts. If we were talking about language, it's the difference between English and Latin. Snobs are purists who want their martial art to be a pristine show piece, not a living thing.

The comment on the 'tippy tap' at 10.50 reminds me of Seven Samurai, where the loudmouthed samurai claimed victory over Kyuso (a real master) after a tap like that. It didn't end well for him.

That intro was 👌 Such an excellent point. In my personal experiences on social media (particularly iFunny) one can't so much as mention Japanese swordsmanship or martial arts withoit facing criticism. It gets to such a point where I see there is a lot of blatant misinformation that gets spread about Japanese weapons and armor. I'd even say I prefer HEMA but on social media I like to talk about historical Japanese martial arts, arms, and armor a lot more bc it's at a point where I feel like sometimes I'm playing devil's advocate just by showing interest in it.

Ah, Elitism, the origin of the saying " Those who claim to know everything are very annoying to those of us who do ". Interestingly enough in real combat where your opponent is determined to kill you that kind of arrogance can be deadly. Hench the instruction ' Never underestimate your opponent '. And yes, I've been in real combat so I have an informed opinion of this matter.

I do realize I’m very late to the party, but being so locked in to one style of fighting, is about the best way to find out what your own guts will look like. That’s ridiculous to think that only one style has a place in any sort of combat.
