Eliza Hutton is coming forward for the first time since her fiancé Brandon Lee died following last week's tragic accidental shooting on the set of the Alec Baldwin film Rust.
Brandon died at 28 in a similar accident in March of 1993 on the set of his film The Crow. Hutton, 57, tells PEOPLE that the accident on the New Mexico set of Rust that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounded director Joel Souza is yet another "avoidable tragedy."

Literally must still feel like yesterday for her when she hears tragedy like this. I have often thought of Eliza over the years, as it was very apparent that her and Brandon were incredibly in love and that they were genuine soulmates. I can’t even imagine what she and Brandon’s other family members have gone through, losing him so senselessly and quickly. Rest in peace Brandon Lee …….. I hope that someday you and Eliza will be reunited for eternity

Can you imagine the fight choreography if Lee played Neo? It just felt like he was born for that role. I also think Rachel Weisz would have been a better Trinity and would have had better chemistry with Lee.

On March 31, 1993, at EUE Screen Gems Studios in Wilmington, North Carolina, Lee was filming a scene where his character, Eric, is shot after witnessing the beating and rape of his fiancée. Actor Michael Massee's character Funboy fires a .44 Magnum Smith & Wesson Model 629 revolver at Lee as he walks into the room. A scene filmed two weeks before Lee's had called for the same gun to be shown in close-up. Revolvers often use dummy cartridges fitted with bullets, but no powder or primer, during close-ups as they look more realistic than blank rounds which have no bullet. Instead of purchasing commercial dummy cartridges, the film's prop crew, hampered by time and money constraints, created their own by pulling the bullets from live rounds, dumping the powder charge but not the primer, then reinserting the bullets. Witnesses reported that two weeks before Lee's death they saw an unsupervised actor pulling the trigger on the gun while it was loaded with the powderless but primed round. Having not removed the primer, the primer could detonate with enough energy to launch a bullet and lodge it in the barrel. In the fatal scene, which called for the revolver to be actually fired at Lee from a distance of 12-15 feet, the dummy cartridges were exchanged for blank rounds, which feature a live powder charge and primer, but no bullet, thus allowing the gun to be fired without the risk of an actual projectile. As the production company had sent the firearms specialist home early, responsibility for the guns was given to a prop assistant who was unaware of the rule for inspecting all firearms before and after any handling. Therefore, the barrel was not checked for obstructions when the time came to load it with the blank rounds. Since the bullet from the dummy round was already trapped in the barrel, this caused the .44 Magnum bullet to be fired out of the barrel with virtually the same force as if the gun had been loaded with a live round, and it struck Lee in the abdomen, mortally wounding him. After Lee's death, the producers were faced with the decision of whether or not to continue with the film. Lee had completed most of his scenes for the film and was scheduled to shoot for only three more days.[1] The rest of the cast and crew, except for Ernie Hudson, whose brother-in-law had just died, stayed in Wilmington. Paramount Pictures, which was initially interested in distributing The Crow theatrically (originally a direct-to-video feature), opted out of involvement due to delays in filming and some controversy over the violent content being inappropriate given Lee's death. However, Miramax picked it up with the intention of releasing it in theatres and injected a further $8 million to complete the production, taking its budget to approximately $23 million. The cast and crew then took a break for script rewrites of the flashback scenes that had yet to be completed. The script was rewritten by Walon Green, Terry Hayes, René Balcer, and Michael S. Chernuchin, adding narration and new scenes. Lee's stunt double Chad Stahelski was used as a stand-in and digital face replacement was used to superimpose Lee's face onto the head of the double. The beginning of the movie, which had not been finished, was rewritten, and the apartment scene remade using computer graphics from an earlier scene of Lee. A character from the original comic book called Skull Cowboy was originally planned to be part of the adaptation and even had scenes filmed. He acted as a guide for Eric Draven between the worlds of the dead and the living. He was set to be played by Michael Berryman, but the role was cut from the film due to Lee's death. O'Barr later remarked that losing Lee was like losing his fiancée all over again, and he regretted ever writing the comic in the first place.

Jon-Erik Hexum died this way on the set of a show he was filming back in the 80s. Why is this still happening??? These are entertainment movies, not the wild west shoot outs. With the technological advances in adding special effects post production, a non metal, solid rubber or solid plastic gun incapable of making any shots of any kind, including noise effects, should be the only thing allowed during filming. Add the noise, spark, and smoke in post-production enhancements. Enough is enough.

Not exactly. Jon Erick put a gun loaded with blanks to his head & pulled the trigger. He was just screwing around while waiting on the next step up. Blanks have a small amount of power & wadding like a piece of cardboard or paper. The concussion from the point blank shot fractured his skull & sent pieces of bone into his head. He passed a few days later. The guns themselves aren’t the problem. People not paying attention, not respecting the things their using, & ignorance is the biggest problem. There’s a million ways people can get hurt and or die on a set.

@@TaraConti you are exactly right and I jumped the gun, no pun intended, on my comment. I was a child when he died and remember being traumatized then because I really had a crush on him. Funny how a child's memory, pre understanding of guns, thought the gun was loaded. I should have fact checked first. Thank you for correcting me.

@@Sunnybrook69 Thanks for not taking it the wrong way. I was also a little kid when he passed but he was a beautiful guy. And in his interviews he seems like a very sweet kid. I say “kid” now as I am an adult and unfortunately he’ll forever be young. I wish there were more episodes of Cover-Up with him. The show just wasn’t the same after he passed. It’s just so sad John Erik, Brandon, and now halyna. Every single one of these incidents were totally avoidable. It really isn’t the fault of the guns themselves it’s the fault of the people that were in charge of them. Either there’s just not enough knowledge or people became complacent and lazy. I’ve shot guns since I was a kid and it’s just ingrained in me that no matter who hands me a weapon whether I’ve watched them clear it and check it or load it whatever themselves. I always double check anything that’s put in my hand or I pick up. I can see why maybe an actor wouldn’t do that because they have so-called professionals on set but if you’re a person who’s handled Guns I think that’s just something that becomes instilled in you.

Because of all the "leave Britney alone" people who make excuses for actors not pushing back on directors about safety concerns or simply negligently handling a firearm because "meh.... that's the armorer's/prop master's job." Hollywood is also exempt from many laws so they will never learn their lessons the way a normal civilian will when making the same mistakes. Hollywood may be above the law, but they are not above the rules of firearm safety... as we see with both brandon lee and alec baldwin.
