one of the favorite things about this movie is that they didn’t make elle’s group of friends toxic. they truly want the best for her and that’s such a nice change from other feminine movies
I love that when Warner says I need a Jackie not a Marilyn, Elle doesn’t think of Marilyn as the dumb blonde stereotype, but only interprets his words as in looks, and that showed us how incredibly intelligent she was.
@@LAkadian Or I would think so because she has proven time and time again that she's only pretending to be a dumb blonde. Obviously you fell for the act hook line and sinker, so who's really the dumb one here?
Every scene is iconic. Not a single boring part. My sisters and I still chant the 'I got bangs💇!!' line every now and then cause we're not quite into 'bend and snap' 😁
She’s such an inspiration. Proving that just because your pretty and feminine doesn’t mean you’re mean and stupid. Which is the way many movies at the time perceived femininity
by correlating femininity with rudeness actually implicates the idea that being feminine is another way of being rude. rude women in movies can just so happen to *be* feminine, it doesnt overlap their entire personality.
@@JadeDAngelo I have to disagree. They were beautiful and smart, but not PINK and smart. In this era there was the big "not like other girls" insistence, where beautiful women were beautiful and intelligent, but they were not pink- referred to as social outcasts because they were chronically introverted and apparently 'losers'. This was the time where the villain was always pink and evil, hyperfeminine but cruel. I get what you're saying, but it's obviously incorrect to assume hyperfemininity was seen as the norm for the main character.
@@alondrita3107 The biggest comedy pun in the movie is exactly that the girl behaves dumb, but also happens to be smart. She is however not intellectual, her interests are fashion magazines and her dog. So, I am not sure whether what you are describing is not just a trait of the movie itself. Nowadays, movies are much more sensitive in their treatment of women, but they don't feature characters quite like El either 🙂
The fact that none of her court room lines are in here is crazy! "because isn't isn't it first cardinal rule of perm maintenance that you're forbidden to wet your hair for the first 24 hours at the risk of deactivating the ammonium thioglycolate?!"
Yeah, i did that on purpose, the whole courtroom scene deserves it's own video, just phenomenal mystery solving as a law student. In short, i want people to watch the whole movie and not just random clips. Sorry, it was my first ever video on RU-vid so I wasn't very sure what to put and what not to :/
@@dramatic._ I dig the video, don't worry! I just love those scenes. "Warner, what kind of shoes are these?!" "uuuhhhh black ones" "see? Gay men know designers, straight men don't!" But keep the videos comin! We like it! 😊
That first clip is easily one of the very best scenes considering it’s in the beginning and you basically get to see that there’s more to Elle than her body or her fashion. She was NOT about to be taken advantage of and let people consider her a dumb blonde, love this movie so much!
I also loved it because it shows how knowledgeable she actually is about her interests. She immediately knew the woman was lying because she was familiar with the fabric, and because she already saw the dress in another issue of teen vogue, so she's very well-versed in fashion. And in the court scene she could say the rules of perming your hair off the top of her head! It's another layer of the movie that shows that "girly" and "shallow, vain" interests still requires a lot of knowledge and intelligence. The amount of times I've seen someone undermine skills like make up and fashion makes me appreciate that part of the movie so much
Elle Woods is a true inspiration for me. She studied hard and she didn't change her image for others. She stayed true to herself. What an absolute queen
"She stayed true to herself" is it just me or is the whole movie about Elle bending herself, her entire future, career and basically life to adapt to her (ex) boyfriend's superficial needs ? What a mindfuck comment.
@@DeathnoteBB that’s not putting other girls down because of her interests. That is just saying the obvious she’s being a bitch and she’s rude to Elle for no reason
elle was ALWAYS a genius 1. she was amazing in school her whole life 2. she got a 179/180 on the LSAT 3. she used her combined law school and fashion school intelligence to win the case 4. HER COMBACKS 😍😍😍
Elle Woods motivates me a lot in going to law school. I'm now 17 and I just got started on my first day of college. Every month I watched Legally Blonde for some sort of inspiration. Whether you're a boy or a girl, can't deny that Elle Woods is a total icon
Elle Woods is one of favorite examples that femininity doesn’t mean pettiness or “being a bimbo”. She was always comfortable with herself and ready to flaunt her intelligence but never in a condescending way unless it was deserved (see: court lines✨). An icon for certain 💖
@TheKitKatLizard yes!! One of my favorite examples of this was when she told them she’d be going to law school and they didn’t put her down or tell her she couldn’t, they simply asked “why?” because they knew she could use her brain for more things than just going to law school for Warner
Yes even in the opening scene here at the dress store, she uses her knowledge and catches the sales lady in a lie, but she’s actually not being bitchy about it. It’s just a frank “I got this” kind of attitude and then she moves on. As opposed to starting some kind of drama.
What I love about Elle's character arc is that, when she comes into her own as a lawyer, she does it as herself; wearing pink, in high heels and all. That's who she is, and that's how she can be the best lawyer she can be.
That look of realisation then such a deep line that is "Im never gonna be good enough for you am I?" It always gives me chills it has such beautiful delivery and tbh till this day it's one of my favorite lines in the whole movie
First time I've seen this movie was with my mom (who is blonde, very feminine and has two degrees - architecture and technologist), and my mom said: this is just a movie, but you have me as an evidence that it is totally possible in real life. So you should never change your personality for your dreams. Keep both and try your best.
You should absolutely, 100% go watch the movie immediately. The musical came out when I was in high school, and while it’s a good musical in terms of entertainment (yes, I do still have the soundtrack memorized, shut up) it doesn’t do Elle justice AT ALL. It sacrifices a lot of her autonomy and work ethic in order to give others (mostly Emmett) something to do, and glosses over her intelligence and frankness because a goofy musical with lots of heavy numbers doesn’t have time to dive that deeply into her personality (plus, they likely assume everyone’s already seen the movie, so they get the gist). Watch. That. Movie. Go check out the Elle Woods as she was always meant to be.
@@erin5930 I sooo do NOT agree with you. The musical is so much better than the movie. So much more realistic, and does Elle much more justice, and the entire thing is just so much more powerful girlpower. I love it.
@@min9726 Sadly people project that pretty girls who look young for their age must be dumb to make themselves feel better... Oh, she's really pretty, then she must be mean and dumb... How does that make any sense??
@Me It's because men are very insecure about their intelligence and it makes them feel bad about themselves if a beautiful woman is also intelligent... Man: What? I can't manipulate this bozzo into bed and to do what I want? What? She's not a bozzo? Oh she must be a b$%#@ then.
I was in high school when this movie came out. Keep in mind: this was released around the same time Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson made a fortune banking on the "dumb blonde" caricature. That tactic was successful because hyperfeminine women are so commonly ridiculed. They're dismissed as airheaded, frivolous, and shallow. They're mocked for things such as being drawn to pink girlie things, or squealing when they're excited, or caring way too much about their eyebrows. *This movie was so ahead of its time.* Elle Woods is aware of the disdain for her, and she even tries to tone down her personality to "fit in," but in the end she embraces her personality and makes it work. She was a Gen Z icon during the age of millennials who hadn't quite gotten the memo yet. I salute you, Elle Woods!
You do know a lot of us millenials during that time were still literal children yk? Why are so many people obsessed with generation names and what not, is this the new horoscope?
@@mutya_ LMAO love your comment. yeah these Zoomers always think so highly of themselves it’s laughable. i was a kid when the movie came out - she was an inspiration to me that i could like pink and be girly and still be a rockstar/badass. then in my 20s watching it again, cemented her as a feminist icon for me. smh y’all zoomers need to get off your high horse
What the hell does that mean, "a Gen Z icon during the age of millennials who hadn't quite gotten the memo yet"? I'm a millennial and I was 8 years old when this movie came out, a young child. And most of Gen Z wasn't born yet. What is with people making everything about a generation identity? The character of Elle Woods isn't about being confined to a generation, hence the Jacquie/Marilyn reference. Elle is timeless
@@Amalthea16 it means generation behavior. Millennials are not just the ones that were born in your year, it’s usually from 1981 to 1996. As you can see, and don’t take it personally, there are a lot of common behaviors between generation. Millennials used to rivalize girls against each other, and gen z try more to support one another, worries about social causes, and a lot of themes that were not considered important for millennials. Therefore, Elle Woods has more gen z actions…
I also really liked her relationship with Emmet, how he always supported her no matter what and he actually respected her and saw her as an equal. And I also liked how their relationship wasnt the main event of the movie, he is just like a bonus. I think that their relationship of mutual respect and admiration is super healthy and one of the best "chick flick" relationships ever. Even on the second movie (which is a bit worse and def not as iconic) he is so devoted to her and knows her worth. Idk I just love this movie. Its my comfort movie🥺💕
Can someone explain why I have yet to find another movie like this where the main character stirs my soul so much? She is classy, gracious, studies hard, dresses up, is smart and pretty and an independent thinker. She's ambitious, a go getter, stands up for what's right even when no one else does. She has a strong sense of right and wrong and does the right thing even when no one is looking, goes after doing the right thing even when it's so much harder. She's kind to others and sticks up for her friends, helps others less fortunate or in unfortunate situations. I'm an idealist and relate so hard to her child like sense of what the world should be like, could be like if people were just honest and did the right thing. I love her forever 💖
@@ami7mina Kill Bill was good although I'm not crazy about gore and violence. Bridget Jones I think was much more focused on romance no? Pride and prejudice haven't seen that yet I will check it out thanks for the rec!
@@ami7mina Kill Bill's different 'cause it doesn't have that wholesome feeling that I presume what the OP implies in their sentiments about Elle Woods. However, Beatrix was one of the best written female protagonists in a while; she's strong-willed, dangerous yet shows compassion to those who deserve it, and basically a survivor.
Can we acknowledge that this movie was made TWENTY YEARS AGO in 2001 and is a million times more relevant today than the movies being released in 2021? Either this movie and its underlying themes were absolutely ahead of their times or we regressed as a society and un terms of movies.
in a weird way elle has always been an inspiration to me. i was treated the same way when i joined AP classes my junior year of hs. my ex friends never thought i could do it and that i was too stupid to do it. so the first time one of them asked me “ur taking 4 AP and 2 honor classes..?” and i literally kid u not responded w elle’s iconic line (1:20) “what like it’s hard?” best moment ever
When I first watched this movie, I didn't realise her wardrobe choice was sort of a metaphor for her character. She started out as pink but considering switching the colour to make herself different for her proposal - which kinda showed her eagerness to please others despite her own preference. Then she got to harvard and she dressed like a peacock but was not given any respect by her classmates or teachers. She eventually dialed down her clothing colour to more neutral and professional black, all the way to when assisting in Callaghan's case. Almost as if she was dialling herself down consciously in order to gain respect from others. But when she realised it never worked to begin with, she switched back to her bubblegum pink clothing as if she was done trying to impress others
One thing about the guidance consular scene is that law school would be interested in her major since it’s unique and the fashion industry need lawyers
I really love Elle Woods' fighting spirit and she is so genuine with herself and also to anyone. And she really know what women empowerment and sisterhood is.
The scenes where she pretends that guy has broke her heart just to help him out and then the next time he sees her he gets a book off a high shelf for her are one of my fav parts from the film
the assumption that women who are into fashion are dumb is so weird. even as a kid, i found it weird (and I wasn’t into fashion at all). you need to understand things like colour coding, patterns, what goes with what, designers, the worth of a clothing item so you can determine wether it’s worth it to buy it or not, the sizes, etc.
Who the hell calls fashion weird ?! Everything we wear (regardless of gender) is fashion! Fashion gives a powerful statement of a person and what it represents them
@@juanchoresultay2704 some people in the modern day view fashion as being a "vapid" and "no substance" interest for women in particular to have, mainly due to misinterpretation, internalized misogyny and fast fashion/mall culture
love how it's not at all self-centered when she screams ''ME!'' when she got the internship she worked so hard for, like yes you deserve this, be proud and enjoy without feeling guilty about it
throughout Hollywood the feminine character was always demonised, and the "cool girl" was masculine. I love this film so much that you don't have to compromise your femininity to be powerful
Ugh, I love her for so many reasons. She showed that girls can be pretty and smart! She showed that even when people are mean/catty to you, you should treat them with kindness and see the good in people. She showed that even when things get tough you must persevere and remain true to your convictions.
I wholeheartedly love Elle, especially because she’s shown to be emotional, but also smart and strong. Sometimes it seems like being emotional is portrayed as bad, but it’s not. Elle proved that while you may need time for a good cry every now and then, you can also prove someone innocent in court. Vote for Elle!
I would be so flattered if a guy would break up with me claiming I'm more of a Marilyn than a Jackie. All due respect to Jackie, she was classy, clever and respectful but Marilyn was a legendary goddess.
Elle woods gives me motivation for nursing school. I know it’s hard but I know with a lot of work , dedication , and studying I can make it even if it’s a hard major.
Even while she’s uncovering the case of the murderer she still complements her bone structure and perm curls! That’s how you be feminine without putting other women down even if they’re in the wrong
OKAY BUT CAN WE ALSO TALK ABOUT WHEN SHE WAS DEFENDING THAT EXERCISE TEACHER (I DON'T REMEMBER THE NAME SORRY) SHE PROMISED NOT TO TELL ANYONE THAT SHE HAD BEEN GETTING SURGERY AND THAT SHE WAS ALSO GETTING SURGERY ON THAT DAY AND ELLE MANAGED TO WIN THE CASE WITHOUT BRINGING THAT UP. QUEEN SHIT.
Elle is so kind hearted too 💓 Like how she refuses to use "dyke" or how she helps the nail tech to win back her life or how she ultimately becomes friends with Vivian after giving her a chance ❤ she's what I want to be
Omg you skipped my favorite part "I'LL SHOW YOU HOW VALUABLE ELLE WOODS CAN BE" and goes to buy a Mac and studies hard AF.. that always uplifts me and makes me want to study harder 💕
0:30 Marilyn Monroe was actually of a genius level IQ who had a thing for smart guys. I can see why, if Elle is her in this instance, she would drop him.
