Wow..as a 66 year old black woman, this is the first time in my life I’ve heard a Caucasian woman speak honestly and boldly. I can’t stop crying. Thank you Ellen.
Jane Elliot has always been an ally, that doesn't take away from the fact that it's commendable for Ellen Pompeo to have spoken up but I just wanted to mention it.
People don’t realize racial diversity is personal for Ellen Pompeo , her daughters and son are half African-American. My mother is Chinese and my father is African American. Whenever I cam home from private school crying from the racist slurs or was bullied, my mother took it personally as well. I raise my glass AND salute ELLEN POMPEO
her kids arent african american theyre mixed and light!! putting mixed peoples problems above black people is also part of the issue!!! she is doing well speaking for people of color but i have to correct you!! mixed people have more privileges than black people
@@tate9722 her kids are half african American...theyre not white sweetie...its pretty much d same...they dont hve white priviledge! they are not white...stop d slavery mentality u have. nobody prefers light skin over any proper dark skin.speak fr ur low self esteem
Keep in mind that Emma Roberts is significantly younger than the rest of them, she probably felt more comfortable listening to them since they have way more experience. Doesn’t mean she’s feeling guilty.
I think she was also maybe nervous in saying the wrong thing amongst older and more experienced women. At the end, she was swinging her leg back and forth which indicates to me that she was nervous
Emma just thought me how to listen and learn. One doesn't always have to say anything. She showed her strength❤. Have a wonderful weekend my sisters of all color.
You said it boo. Now more than ever we must listen without the need or urge to respond. We must listen to listen, be educated, empathize and take action accordingly ❤
@@biancac412 black is a color of a crayon! Who's actually black? And who's actually white, More like pink the derivative of red. A racist German invented that mind fuck so wake the hell up, ignorant! Take your ass back to school and learn something dummy!
For the adults in the room that are commenting about Emma check the respect factor she is the youngest in the room and sometimes listening is better on these subjects. If she spoke about this and is a white woman that doesn’t have children of color LIKE ELLEN something would be said as well. Pay attention and sometimes just hush.
Ferrari Yes. 🙌🏻 I wish more white people listened and stayed present during difficult or unfamiliar conversations about race. It’s easy to be afraid of saying something stupid, or tone deaf, or unhelpful (I’m guilty of that fear), but sometimes listening is the most important thing, and always the best way to learn. I love all of these women. 💜
FallOutGirl86 not much of a “conversation” if one person is encouraged to only listen based on their skin color. It actually sounds kinda racist when you think about it.
Corinne Shutack Lmao what does Shonda Rhimes have to do with Ellen Pompeo’s intelligence? We can learn something from everyone and we can also teach. But what makes her the teacher? Because she wrote and produced the show Ellen happens to star in? That’s dumb. 😂
@@IamHip I'm all up for the conversation, but don't be rude. You'd never respond to me with "LMAO" or "that's dumb" to my face, for good reason. Doing it behind a screen reveals both aggression and cowardice.
Corinne Shutack Well lets be real, I would never say “Lmao” to anyone’s face because that’s weird, I would just laugh. It’s not me being rude, it’s me expressing my opinion. I can think someone’s opinion is dumb, that’s not rude. If I called you dumb, then you can call me rude, but since I didn’t: you’re the rude one calling people out of their name, not me. 😂
Preach Ellen!! Seeing her get emotional just shows how deeply she cares about equality and making this world a fairer place.. Hope more actresses of her stature follow her lead.
TheRealMVP Remember that she is an actress and her script in this interview called for massive virtue signaling and fake crying. It was actually nauseating and sad to watch. She is a self-loathing white liberal woman who hates her own heritage and *desperately* seeks approval from the others on the panel.
Omniscient 1 is this you God? I'd like to know because otherwise I don't understand how you can tell whether what is in her heart is genuine. She doesn't "hate her heritage" she simply recognizes that white people have done wrong in the past, and even though we've progressed things still aren't equal! Or are you suggesting that every white person needs to love the fact that some of their ancestors owned slaves and oppressed black folks? Every decent person would be ashamed of that, unless you are a member of the kkk or a Neo-nazi
TheRealMVP I hear you. People should be ashamed of what their ancestors did. Mongolians should be ashamed that Gingus Khan invaded and brutalized Asia and Europe. Arabs should be ashamed of taking Europeans as slaves from the Barbary pirates. Everyone should be ashamed because someone in the past has done something to be ashamed of!
Samaria Mckinney yea I think people forget she married a black man and her three children are going to have to deal with exactly what’s she’s talking about and she’s just aware of that.
Great round table discussion (sans the table). Wish there was an Asian actress represented here. I’d love to hear Constance Wu or Sandra Oh’s experience and perspective.
S Azizi What was messed up about Ellen not wanting to be a part of political parties that only include white people? As for Gabrielle Union, @15:14 she was saying she didn’t want her children to be literally the only black kids in their school. She’s right, they shouldn’t be, it’s good that she searched for a more diverse school for her kids to attend. What was wrong @ 21:54?
@Reina Paraiso you can watch Sandra Oh speak about her experience on The Actress Round Table along with Angela Bassett I watch it last week ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mvfzWFl5q9E.html
@@sazizi3570 I can understand that what Ellen said didn't sit well with you... but I think you are missing the fundamental point she was trying to get across, which is "white privilege"... and unfortunately, because of your inability to comprehend this notion, you are part of the issue. Thinking it's "messed up" that she left an all white party because "race isn't your only identifying factor", and white people have "different upbringings", is perfectly dismissive of white privilege. White privilege is very real, and is one thing, that every white person in America has in common. To rationalize your statements by bringing up an all Hispanic, Black or Asian party makes no sense, since none of the aforementioned groups are born into the same privilege that is inherent with white people as a whole in America. White people come from all walks of life, but each white person in America, from birth, is considered and regarded higher than any minority (Hispanic, Black, White etc.). Minorities have to WORK to earn the basic regard that all white people are BORN to... that's what "white privilege" means. Until you understand that, I'm sure subsequent discussions focusing on race & privilege in America will not sit well with you.
@@sazizi3570 If any of this is lost on you, please understand that I'm not saying every white person in today's society made the choice to be privileged... rather, they were born into the privilege without choice (though the privileged roots are sprung out of human injustices ((Native American genocide, indentured servitude, slavery, etc.))... Ellen is essentially saying that white people must now make the choice to stand up against white privilege and stand for equality. The color of ones skin does not denote their worth.
Please watch this entire conversation. Ellen’s heartfelt moment going around was moving but this entire conversation needs to be heard. Love Ellen & Emma’s work. Gab is a legend in my eyes & I have so much respect for what Gina is fighting for. Great chat ladies!
Semajj Philly Ellen is a self-loathing white liberal woman whose virtue signaling is nauseating. She is openly racist because her opinion of the crew on set (of whom she had never me) solely on the basis of their race, something they had no choice in. Don’t support racism, MLK was right, judge a person not on their color but rather on the content of their character.
@@fullthrottlealways this is the biggest load of bullshit I’ve ever heard. She is a huge blm activist and she is married to a man of colour with bi racial children. She is far from racist
I cried with Ellen, she knew she had to say what the other actresses could not say. It shows that genuine quality that we can all reach for also in our non Hollywood lives. We can all tune into compassion and courage as long as we understand the value of standing in our truth. 💞💞💞
Helene Cho One should *NEVER* judge a person based solely on their outward appearance as she has here. She is just another self-loathing, virtue signaling liberal.
i have been lucky enough to work on greys anatomy the last 3 seasons, as a background extra, Ellen P is a lady with Class. She is all about keeping it diverse on set (she has had a black man in her life for many years), and she treats everybody with respect, my sister is really close to Gabrielle Union,(a real Class Act, )and i have worked with Emma roberts on american horror story(cult) , these Ladies are all Real , and keep it 100% ) and they are all really nice, Thanks for posting this, and thank you to all 4 Ladies for keeping it Real , this conversation is Epic, and real life emotion kicks in
Ellen made me tear up and when Gabrielle and Gina spoke about how they were expected to just feel grateful really made the waterworks start. I have felt that same feeling like I don't have a right to speak up or say anything because I should just be great I'm at the door... And Emma's listening really showed so much respect she didn't try to make it like she knew or understood she just listed and learned... and I'm grateful that people still do that when talking about race.
I didn't think I could love Ellen Pompeo more... The boldness in her words and her actions. The raw emotion of how personal it is for her. This was beautiful to watch. Love all of these strong women.
It is plain to see that Ellen is committed to diversity and that this is an issue that matters to her. Brilliant conversation and so important that everyone had a say in it.
Ellen Pompeo is just simply an amazing person. Her point of view on all social topics & her activism is soo inspiring. She deserved that money for a very long time. And the people who have a problem with her salary are simply jealous and their thinking is decades behind & are essentialy false feminist.
@PurelyAfrican I dont agree with the statement about she would be struggling without a person. yes shonda has done amazing things for all people but lets not fall in the trap of saying without a individual a person will be stuck at a certain job. also i like that ellen has realized in her own life that its good to open up yourself to all races and encourage others to do so. as she said some white people started the problem, so its our job to fix it. its good to have convo like this to get other people opinion i welcome it as long its from a good place.
She makes millions. Millions. People are not able to feed their kids they are so poor. People are homeless. Ellen is right. She is clueless. Being properly compensated is one thing. Making millions per episode on a TV show is crazy. No one should make that much, no matter their gender. Ellen isn't brave. She is a zillionaire breathing rarefied air. It is gross.
It’s was right for Emma to not chime in. She has the privelege because she comes from an acting family and it will only sound awkward if she tries to relate with Gina and Gabrille. All she had to do was listen and learn. She works in an inclusive environment already and that’s good.
God bless each and everyone of these woman. This interview was very enlightening. And shame on you if you said “not Emma” to think so negatively is the reason why woman have these boundaries. Change your way of thinking. Whose to say she isn’t listening and learning. . . This video was awesome. We need more woman or PEOPLE like these woman. #Trailblazers
Yes, it was very enlightening, they are women worth millions and they are complaining like they deserve more. FFS, they don't even deserve what they get now. Oh and just so you know, they think they are better than the caterers, how very humble of them. At least caterers have skills, what do they do? Lie and manipulate for a living. We need less of this, not more. These people don't care about you. Wake the F up.
This was insane! In tears and awe all at the same time. I need more of this enriched, wise & inspiring talk! Thanks Net -a-Porter for bringing this to us.
Once your sociological imagination has been trigger it’s very hard to turn your back on very real problems that we see in our society. I felt so proud watching this. Every word was so deliciously raw and put so eloquently. It brings me solace knowing these women and their voice can be seen/heard.
@@caddygirl813 Equal pay is contingent upon equal worth, which doesn't exist in the entertainment industry, nor should it. Some men get paid more than others, some women get paid more than men - it isn't gender based.
This was beautifully brave. I would love to see Ellen continue to use her platform in this way and possibly make a mini-series out of these types of open and honest conversations. Also, every time Gabrielle Union says anything anywhere, I love her more.
This is an incredible watch - thank you for sharing ladies. Looking out for each other and asking for our worth is not only courageous, it's necessary. Communication, compassion, courage and strength - using our power for power... lifting each other up diminishes nothing from us - it only adds to our collective shine. YAAAAAAAAAAS on many a level. Thank you, thank you thank you for this vid. Blessings, love and light! xx
OMG Ellen!! You touched my heart. 💙💙💙 Thank you 🙏🏽 for your courage!!! You are amazing!!! Gabrielle, I love how you have stepped into your womanhood and how you are owning your voice! This was incredibly powerful and transformational. 💙
I feel so inspired watching this, each woman in this video is an inspiration and it was a privilege to get a look into their lives. Also, Ellen to me is an amazing human and her soul looks so pure.
What a effing gold mine!!! Wow! Kudos to the ladies for being so honest. Also, I've realised here that just because one is silent for most of a conversation does not mean that they have it better, but perhaps they're being educated. I hope Emma Roberts feels empowered to use her priveledge in her own spaces as much as Ellen does.
This video means so much to me right now. It’s “everything” I’ve been fighting for ever since I became an artist, ever since I became a photographer, and every time I tried to break into media. I’ve always wanted to work behind the scenes but as a minority the “walls” are there! And because we don’t match behind the camera our populations the narratives keep getting pushed and affecting our society in dark ways!
Michael Dominick The biggest racial barriers are economic. I went to an art magnet school, learned computer graphics, film, and design when my parents couldn’t even afford to buy me a computer. Graduated with a GPA over 4.0. Had to work McDonalds, Retail, and Call Centers at minimum wage to pay my bills until I could “afford” anything close to what I needed to film, edit, and create. By the time I had the tools and started to get freelance jobs I was coming up fast to being 30 years old. Those that had support, got in and became my competition in their early 20s. They could afford to undercut my rates. All of that before we get into racial bias which I have experienced from clients and their own peers. I never cheated a client but they were kind enough to tell me what their colleagues thought about me.
This discussion was EVERYTHING!!! Everything that's needing to be said everywhere but most are too scared, too unknowing, and too closed minded to say. I love every single one of these women before this and now I see why.
EXCELLENT conversation, so proud of these women's bravery to speak up and out !!! We love this, very inspiring ! Love this example of how powerful we can be when we stick together!
Gina made a great point when she mentioned people choosing not to cater to latin audiences because they are already the most committed consumer group. This is why as people of color, we have to take our commitment and money to projects that do involve more lead POC. Great video overall and major points made by all of these wonderful women. I applaud them for even taking part in this conversation.
I think this is so credibly amazing and very interesting these women are awesome smart strong and know what they're worth I wish for all women to feel this in their heart no matter what they do in life. This is Ivana from Blue Mountains Ontario Canada ❤️
- This was a beautiful thing to watch. Four women from different backgrounds and experiences coming together to have a civilized conversation. Women empowerment, self love and love for others is the key. Thank you for sharing this, Ellen! #Blessings 🥰🥰
What a great conversation. I am the first to admit that I can be better in being aware of my surroundings and using my voice to speak for those who can't/are afraid to. Thank you!!
OMG, I loved Ellen before now I am just...WOW! Thank you for speaking the truth with confidence and grace. Gabrielle and Gina you are true champions to women of color, THANK YOU!
ellen & emma giving the WOC the floor & listening to them speak about their experiences is really incredible to see. that's something you don't see enough of in the world & i feel emotional just watching it. gonna go cry now lol love y'all
We need more of this. The power these women held in their voices made me listen to what change sounds like and looks like. Not by how many 0's follows.
This is amazing. I feel, truly, like a better person for just watching this discussion. So proud of the honesty, the true care, realness of this conversation. I hope that I find my voice, expression and ability to demand equality.
I don't even know what to say it was so amazing. They said everything so perfectly. I've never been able to put to words how I feel. It's like Ellen read my mind and told me how I felt. We need more videos like this. Thank you!!!
