When Michelle Yeoh said that it felt like everything she’s done in the past 40 years of her career prepared her for EEAAO, I felt that. Growing up and watching her films, being inspired by this woman for DECADES- I cried many times but especially when they gave us the supercut of all the Michelle Yeohs. She deserves it ALL 🙌🏻

Claires comment about movies/movie-makers fetishizing traumatic events that happen to women rather than prioritizing the humanity of that person and their experience -- maybe the most powerful statement said. This is a global pandemic and diseased perspective that is rampant in the world. See, understand and connect to women as human beings. They are not "others" to be fetishized in movies or in real life. They are humans.

As someone who has been a Michelle Yeoh fan since seeing her in Heroic Trio and Executioners, it struck me odd that she was correct that mainstream Hollywood and casual movie people only "discover her" when her next movie comes out. This year when people saw Everything , Everywhere All at Once, some of my friends or my friends children were saying " This NEW actress Michelle 'something' was AMAZING in that movie. I hope she does something else." I then have to get on my high horse and give them a history of the legend that she is and has always been.

YESSS. My dad used to buy VCDs of all her movies (from the Hong Kong films to Hollywood) and we’d watch with my grandpa. 3 generations of Asians sharing a love for Michelle Yeoh. She’s a living legend in Southeast Asia and it’s completely normal. So to hear how people know her just from Crazy Rich Asians and EEAAO I’m genuinely surprised before I realize not everyone had my childhood with Dato Michelle Yeoh being literally in everything everywhere all at once 🥲✨

I have seen a lot of people (not super young people) saying they only discovered her recently which I find quite amazing because in my mind Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was very popular, even in a "mainstream" way back in the day. She has also been fairly consistently in her output since then? But I guess since Crouching Tiger, her works have not achieved as much mainstream success besides some moderate success with Memoirs of a Geisha.

There is still a very marked difference in the questions that are asked at the actress roundtables versus the questions asked at the actors roundtables. I get that there are some social issues that are important for actresses in the public eye to talk about but I find it strange that only the women have to have these types of conversations where as the men get to wax lyrical about their art, character psychology, method , experiences etc. I would like to hear more about these extraordinary actreses artistic processes!
@phoebeel
@phoebeel Год назад
Tbh I find these topics way more interesting. You can watch other interviews where they talk about their method like the one where two actresses/actors talk to each other about their work. Instead, I wish the men would be forced to talk more about social issues. I find it more that the men are hiding behind the excuse that it's all just about the work. The work is easy if you're a man. Women need to talk about social issues because they are hindered and hurt by those issues. Men NEED to talk about those issues so that the rest of the world listens up. Men get paid more, men have more power. Unless they start talking about that fact, they are keeping the system alive

The race between Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh to Oscar Best Actress will be among the toughest and greatest in the history of this award. If the Oscar does not honor both two actresses (like it did once in 1968 with Katharine Hepburn and Barbara Streisand), then I wish Oscar will give the golden statute to Michelle Yeoh, marking the first time an Asian actor/actress winning Best Actor/Actress title. I love the convo about their hours and they also need to mention the crew more. We’re there before the actors and after the actors leave. Everyone else is appreciative when the day is cut shorter than 12 hours because an actor says no. Been on so many 90 hr work weeks, and 7 days a week with all over nights and we have less of a life than actors do. It’s exhausting. I’m navigating getting out of the business because it lost its magic for me. Still love art and films but I’ve missed so much of life because of it.

If I hadn't have stepped out of the business I wouldn't have met my boyfriend. I was so focused on work and had no time for anything else. I personally never wanted to date within the business either but guys outside of the business couldn't handle my schedule. It's a very tough balance. They really should do a table of some of the "lower" staff. Everyone thinks working in movies is glamorous. It's not for the crew depending on the actors. I've worked with great atmostpheric actors who love to talk with the crew and hang out and some that couldn't even look in the direction of someone making $15 an hour.

I don't care how bad you think it was but she shines there. Reminds me of Black Swan (well duh same director) but really, really underrated. I am glad she toned down her Hollywood life for a few years after that since the critics and Hollywood WERE BRUTAL to her. Let's not forget.
