Hockey Night in Canada Insider Elliotte Friedman joined the guys to chat about the Canucks Game 7 loss to the Oilers and the future of their UFA and RFA's this summer.
Having Demko down after game 1 of the Nashville series would cripple any team then having Pettersson a ghost for the entire post season then finally losing Boeser was the last straw that broke the Canucks back. Vancouver is going to be a force next season and for the next 2-3 years for sure.
They just have to avoid the let down a lot of teams go through once they enter that 'contender' territory. It just feels so common for teams to overachieve and surprise everyone then follow it up with a tough year.
They are going to be a completely different team on paper next season. Zadorov, joshua, Lindholm, Myers, Bluegar are all going to be unaffordable. There isn’t a lot of money to sign anyone, especially when competing with 31 other teams in free agency. Allvin is gonna need to get very creative if we hope to repeat the success we had this season.
The biggest question facing the Canucks is what the fuck happened to Elias Petterrsson at the all-star game because he's been useless ever since. Potential to be a franchise destroying contract.
Canucks get an A+ for being pure exciting entertainment. If any Canucks fan think the Canucks deserve to win the Stanley Cup this run is clueless and in denial. I'm not clueless but still in denial. That's why it hurt so much like breaking up from a very bad relationship. 😂😂
He just learned what a lot of people learned during covid. As long as you know what you are talking about nobody really cares how presentable you are on a video call. And Elliotte Friedman is the best in the business, he could be dressed up as a banana and everyone would still take him seriously.
Takes more energy to play in the defensive zone than the offensive zone. Too much time in their end over 2 series. Canucks just ran out of gas for that reason.
It was a good year and with tons of excitement and high drama. Hats off to the organization. And let's be honest, if someone had told you that the Canucks would lose by 1 goal in game 7 in the second round, and do so essentially without the services of Petterson and Demko, you would have asked the person to repeat what they just said. Let Hronek walk, resign Lindy, Myers, and Big Z if you can. And try to address the Elephant in the room : wtf is going on with EP40? $11+M a year for a guy who gets 1 goal in 13 playoff games? That's a big problem. Confidence issues? Or does Elias need to put 8 to 10 kilos? Should be another interesting Summer with Rutherford at the helm. Hoping this is the start of regular appearances in the post season. #GoCanucksgo
@TheRealJoe_Biden criticism from a man with advanced dementia? Yikes! Yes, Hronek scored last night. But that was his only goal in 13 playoff games. He had 1 g and 1 a. He's gonna want alot of cheddar and that might be $ spent wiser elsewhere. Myers should hopefully sign for a discounted rate, and hopefully they can sign Big Z but I think $6M per is a little too high. We'll see what Jimmy gets done over the Summer months.
I'm not interested in why we couldn't beat the oilers in the playoffs. The only question I want answered is WHAT THE HECK happened to this team after the All Star game ? They went from, not being near the top but actually ON the top of every offensive stat, they were the league leaders ! Then afterwards it was like they couldn't score at all. Several guys including our so called best player just slowly stopped scoring just fizzled out. And a few others of course never did score after November/December ( we won't name names but we know who that is). So wtf happened ?
Kuzmenko slowly declined from a point per game player to a 3rd line producer. Then Mikheyev who was on pace for 50-60 points became a 4th line producer. You just lost 2 top 6 forwards right there.
It's actually kind of easy - look at my Oilers. They were BRUTAL to start the year, cost their coach his job they were so bad -but - their goal was to make the SC finals and win. What happens to a Marathon runner who sprints right out of the gate and goes full bore? He / she gets a massive lead on the field, but runs out of gas 2/3rds of the way through the race and never wins it in the end. You need to 'pace' yourself - reg season is a marathon and is full of ups and downs, but you want to be peaking at playoff time. That's part of the teams learning process. Not saying you want to totally crap the bed to start the year like the Oilers did - but you do need to moderate how fast you go. It's pretty obvious to me the Canucks ran out of gas.
Puck Luck. If anyone thought that the victories over the Oilers in October would meant anything when it comes to how a team does in the playoffs, they're delusional. The Canucks had a lot of luck, but luck isn't a strategy--as they found out.
i believe that if we had Demko, and Petey playing good this is a different series that being said ,our power play is fkin terrible all that talent and couldn't even get over the blue line that's a fault we need to fix.I think that we have a great management group that will keep adding to make this team much better. If you look at what they have done so far NHL team is heading in the right direction and the AHL team is full of really good prospects and made the playoffs also.Once they get the CAP under control will help .We may have lost in 2nd round but many had us not making the playoffs and we not only did that but won the division .this was a surprise year for sure, gonna be hard to do again but we are heading to the top and this time next year will be kicking everyone to curb lol GO CANUCKS GO
they also played to not lose and didn't play to win flipping pucks out ,chip in an head to bench, there were lots of times they could have skated with puck but chipped off boards to defensive in my books
Canucks had a great first half of the season and sort of played ok hockey from there on. Tocchet style of hockey wore them down essentially as it was evident throughout the latter part of the season and playoffs. Maybe a better physio team to keep em in shape especially EP.
Vancouver lost to a team in Edmonton who was finally starting to get closer to their ceiling in games 5 and 6.... a much better team than Vancouver. Vancouver has a long way to go yet.
Worth noting: Boeser was -2 in game six, and admitted that he played a horrible game. Players play hurt all the time in the playoffs, and sometimes they can't play. That's the deal for every single team. Marchand, Matthews, McDavid, they've all played with issues. But only the Canucks want to raise Boeser as some kind of lose that explains why they averaged 16 shots a game over the last two games, why the lost 3 of the last 4 games and why the universe just isn't fair. The Canucks blew every PP in game 7. That had nothing to do with Boeser, and everything to do with the Edmonton PK. Sometimes you need to credit the other team when you get your ass handed to you.
@@johnstevens213 Petey put Giuseppe in all alone. Also was the pressure that created turnover on the Garland goal. He didn't do enough in the playoffs, but I thought he created good chances for bad wingers in game 7
The cut outs of never been respected. They never will be because Vancouver such a beautiful place people of always hated Vancouver if they don't live there.
Why was Canucks defensive strategy to be non existent in the neutral zone, and back up quickly over their blue line putting up zero resistance to attackers? I hope they don’t try that shit again next year. Also the forwards have zero chemistry on the rush, and clearly have no idea what to do. Probably less than 5 good opportunities on the rush between 1st and 2nd round. Pretty sad
Because the Kings were aggressive in the neutral zone and got decimated by the Oilers puck skill at speed. Canucks tried to clog up the rush, and largely were able to. They forced Edmonton to win different, with defense and greasy goals. Edmonton just had a little more in the tank.
the series flattered Vancouver, but Friedman is the ultimate non-offending cipher. Does he ever tell hard truths that the Canucks were just lucky to be close.
The hard truth is teams are a lot closer to each other then they realize the inexperienced really showed for the Canucks in the last 2 games that’s really the only difference
I would trade Petterssen, Demko, Mikheyev for Brady Tkachuk and Chychrun. This would give the Canucks an out on Pettersson's contract and get a player with heart and soul back. The trade makes sense for Ottawa as they would get a number one goalie. The Canucks could use the extra cap money to sign Zadorov and a couple of other players.
If they played the way they did in the last 5 minutes during the whole game, the Canucks would have won. its about consistency, Which they didnt have. They have shown they could do it. But they didnt produce. So on to the oilers and the hopes they win the cup.
His number might have even come down in price. But i guess hindsight is 20/20… I was a huge critic all playoffs, but i’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. He’ll find his game again. Hopefully this performance from him stokes an internal fire for him to become a better player for next playoffs.
Elliotte Friedman " it took them 50 minutes to get going, but it wasn't because of lack of effort " ???? that is EXACTLY why it took them 50 minutes to get going. You can't wait until there's 10 min left to start pushing in a Game 7... CASE IN POINT....if they played the entire 3rd period they way they did in the last 8 ....they would have at least carried it into OT. This all comes down to a WEAK EFFORT ....and whoever doesn't see that needs to wake up ....and I'm not taking anything away from the Oilers effort, it was good...but 2 shots in the 1st....and not ONE SHOT on net during a 4 minute double minor???? Are you f'in kidding me??? and the best chance on a 4 minute power play is shorthanded by Oilers...and Silovs has to bail out his idiot teammates. they should be f'in embarrassed by their effort in a Game 7. Proud of their season for sure; i'll give them props...but for a Game 7 they were all a no-show (save Silovs) except the last 8 minutes in the 3rd.....I have to put a lot of that on Tocchet...he's got to light a huge fire under their ass in the intermissions and it seems he simply failed at that
Lindholm would be a mistake to resign...they need someone to compliment their core, Lindholm doesn't compliment their core. Having Lindholm in the lineup doesn't make sense when they already have Miller and Pettersson signed long term. At least we know they will get an upgrade over Mikaeyev
Coach Rick says they need someone to play with Pettersson, a guy that can hold on to the puck. He had Kuz but didn't like him. Petterrson signing was a huge mistake. Hughes is not built for the playoffs. Only defence man is Zadorov. Cole, Myers and Hronek are marginal. Canucks management like tall defence men but it didn't help them to win.
Tall and heavy D is exactly what you want. Zadorov is an amazing D man. He gets no credit for his skill and abilities. You need guys his size in the playoffs as most people are afraid of him and his hitting ability.
Florida will advance and the Dallas Stars will advance what I seen the are bigger and tough team than any team oilers played Rangers are not defensive enough to hold Florida’s
NHL is "fixed" ....the 'Nucks lost because of the fix ....Hyman should have been suspended for the crosscheck on big "Z"...."Nucks would have win in game 6 .....how is legal betting allowed in this league ????? Stars in 4 straight....
Hear me out…Cole signs a contract with Edmonton then helps the Canucks score against them. Oilers buy him out and face recapture penalties for the next 2-4 years. How hilarious would that be?
@@jayt3096 You conveniently left out Pettersson's playoff numbers this season?? Oh, and the bubble doesn't count. If you call that "his prime," it is not too good!
Hughes was getting hammered in the Nashville series. I guarantee he was playing hurt. He barely shot or moved up ice like he did in the regular season. Petterson just had a bruised ego. He hopefully toughen up this off season.
Hughes needs a bruiser to threaten anyone who touches him. He also has to man-up and not be afraid of being hit once in a while. Can’t dodge them all. Petey just needs someone other than stonehands Mikheyev and Funnyman to play with. Mackinnon plays with Lehkonen and Rantanen…
@@mcjesus6524 obviously oiler fans are chasing down canucks media to shit talk because they know they can only be sore winners through 2 rounds. then they turn into sore losers.
Elliotts not an Oilers homer. He's a Leafs guy if anything. He picked Edmonton to win the series. Big deal, so did almost every other analyst. I picked the Canucks, but I'm also a biased fan so it is what it is. Go Canucks Go!
Exactly, Tochett was a passenger this series. What kind of game plan was to play D in your zone for a minute. Finally get the puck and skate to the red line. Dump it in the Oilers zone and do a line change? Rinse and repeat. Skinner was useless and they finally exposed him in the last 10 minutes. What a joke!!!!
Have you seen the Canucks roster? It’s a miracle they pushed Edmonton to 7 games, then I forget Oilers have terrible goaltending. But seriously, with no Boeser, Nucks only have Miller, Pettersson and Lindholm as legitimate threats on forward. How did the Canucks make it that far LOL
