Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
There was a fair amount of small arms production in Croatia during the breakup of Yugoslavia, but most of it was not particularly high quality. After the government of Croatia had become established, it looked to arm a formal military, and turned to the Elmech company to produce a sniper's rifle. The result was the EMM-992 in .300 Winchester Magnum and a companion rifle in 7.62x51mm NATO, the EM-992. Adopted by the Croatian military and police forces in 1992, production ran until about 1997. It is not clear how many were made in total, although the majority were the .300 WM model.
Mechanically, the rifle is a simple push-feed, rotating bolt system. It uses a detachable magazine (unfortunately missing on this example) that could hold either 5 or 7 rounds (I presume 5 in .300WM and 7 in 7.62 NATO). The barrel is free floated, and has integral porting at the muzzle. The trigger is a commercial Timney unit, and the scope chosen was the Leupold 3.5-10 x 24mm. A commercial Harris bipod and composite wood stock round out the elements of the rifle. They apparently served well, but have since been replaced in military service by the Sako TRG-42.
Interestingly, a number of Elmech rifles have been documented in use in Syria, by ISIS and other groups. This particular example was imported into the US directly from a Croatian police department.

One piece of advice to the author; it was not a "civil war", because the forces came from other republics - Serbia (which took the entire federal army) and the Serbs from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro - which forces attacked the Croatian south and the City of Dubrovnik. all the battlefields in Croatia that were crucial for the creation of "Greater Serbia", from the line Virovitica, Karlovac (where XDM pistols and VHS assault rifles are made today) and the City of Karlobag. I guess these toponyms mean nothing to you, but a whole war was fought to stop the Serbian fascists from occupying all the lines east of these cities. The war was fought for territory and on Croatian soil, and it was not fought for some armed peasants who took up arms and declared a rebellion. No, sir. They have all the weapons and weapon systems taken over from the “federal” military where Serbs and Montenegrines represent almost 90% military officials. Serb in a bad way". Unfortunately, they still believed in such a narrative.

From what I could gather the Elmech company was founded in 1969. There isnt much info on whether they were involved in weapons production before the start of the war but somewhere after 1991 the manufacturing was moved and split into two factories, located in the North-West of Croatia. It says also before they went into sniper rifle design and production they produced various caliber mortar shells and heavy towed artillery shells ei. for howitzers and so on.

So a bit of digging, the rifle is in fact a nice combination of the following: Timney adjustable trigger for the Mauser K98k, match grade barel from the Sako TRG with a recoil brake on the end. There were two mounting options the regular Harris mounting system and the less used "custom" system which I suspect is something by Croatian Rusan riflemaker. It did use both Sako and in house magazines. Leupold & Stevens Vari-X 3.5-10× was the contractual basic optic provided for the MUP (Police) and the OSRH ( Croatian armed defense forces)... The guns are still in use, and can be purchased freely on the civilian market with both hunting and marksman buy permits. Any other questions as far as the Elmech ( Now liquidated) that is superseded by Elmech Sintermak or the time period and the importance of this gunmaker I can answer within a couple of days when i can get in contact with an ex original war time/early peace time Elmech engineer.

Elmech Razvoj (Development) was a small-scale domestic arms manufacturer in northwestern Croatia in Zagorje founded in 1969, all the info I found was in Croatian and only on the actual rifle's wiki page. Initially they made ammo, loads and explosives for artillery and similar weaponry. The EM-992 was used by Yugoslav domestic hunters primarily in nearby areas in Croatia and Slovenia but also Bosnia and Serbia further away and some were exported to Romania for use in their army. It was also used by police forces as mentioned. Z stands for Zagreb where they were produced. All current info suggests Elmech went into bankruptcy somewhat recently.

In particular, the old Israeli ones sold to South Africa. I managed to migrate from infantry section leader (5SAI battalion, Ladysmith, from 1973) to Durban Light Infantry (Motorised, before they became Mechanised with Ratels) after a few years, and got into anti-tank on one of these venerable old heaps. Very unusual that that the stock has pillar beds in the stock screw hole locations, but no bedding compound around the receiver to maintain it's position in the stock. That range marker around the outside is the Leupold ranging system. For them, the center of the duplex reticle to the thick marker corresponds to 16" at that range (breastbone to vital zone on an average whitetail deer). While I can't definitively say what the exact amount is for this scope, that's how it works on their VX lines.

It most likely is a copy, I worked at Timney from 1990-94 and at that time we stamped the trigger housing vertically on the left side with the Timney name ( I do not see that on this trigger ). I can tell you that somehow some of "our" triggers did end up over there because I remember several "suits" did come to the shop and wanted to see all the sales records - trying to figure out how those triggers got there. Not sure what ever came out of that investigation, but apparently no "wrong doing" on Timney's part was ever found. Maybe that's why they started copying triggers because they could no longer acquire the real ones. Just some inside info from a former employee. Cool to finally see what they were being used for though.

As the reticle is in the second focal plane, you will use the magnification ring to adjust the image size so that any given object of a given size in inches/cm wil fitt between the 2 points off the thicker lines in the crosshair, and then you can read the distance in yards/meters at the rear of the magnification ring. That is also why some reticles are called 30-30 reticle, as it refers to an object 30" in height/with, bracketed between the two opposing thick points in the crosshair. Otherwise, a fine presentation on your fantastic channel. Regards. Peder / Gunsmith

Amazing Croatia was able to build such a fine rifle, considering there was an unjust weapon's embargo placed on Yugoslavia during that time period. Guess the UN peacekeepers looked the other way when the trucks carrying the Sako barrels drove through their checkpoints.

In 1991 when we got invaded our army was entirely paramilitary volunteers equipped with a few civilian grade hunting rifles and homemade smgs, driving around in homemade APCs and they still won against one of worlds biggest armies 😂

It is very likely it got smuggled in, bec the UN made an weapons embargo, which effectively just effected Croatia and Bosnia only, which hadn't any real weaponary, while Serbia had most of the Yugoslavian Army weaponary.

The bolt looks very similar to the bolt on my Tikka T3x, as in the two lugs at the front and the position of the extractor and ejector. I'm willing to bet that Tikka made the bolt too.

FYI. That Leupold scope is a 3.5x10x40mm, 1”/25.4mm main tube. I owned one, and a friend owns two or three. Nice optics, but no parallax adjustment or zero stop like the more modern updated version from Leupold.

The numbers on the mag ring are used in conjunction with the second focal plane duplex reticle for ranging your target. Simply turn the mag ring until the target fits in the duplex reticle then look at the number to get your range.

When you want to reach out and touch some one at very long range and send them a message they'd just can't ignore a three hundred Winchester magnum bolt gun has a lot to offer. Harder hitting and flatter shooting than a .308 for sure.

That's an interesting rifle and I bet a great plain Jane shooter, great video. The choice of 300 Winchester Magnum for the time period certainly improves the concept. The extra 500 FPS over the 7.62 NATO makes the reach easier.

The gun has a very cool medaillon on the bottom of the pistol grip section which this example unfortunately is missing... a fair amount of these guns have found their way to switzerland at some point. They pop up quite regularly here in both calibers. I have owned a 308 version too :-) the mosin crate might ask one of the larger swiss dealers like lagardere (I know they had quite many of these guns). Maybe they can put him in the right direction to find a magazine.

Some quick background to give you some perspective on this weapon that might have been interesting to include in the video: - at the time there was a general arms embargo on the whole Yugoslavia and its successor states. This was in place from 1991-1996. - the official army of the federation disarmed Croatia's territorial defence forces - technically a local militia that transformed into the army of Croatia, leaving them with a huge shortage of weapons. - after the whole Yugoslav Sengoku Jidai, weapons of all kinds in large quantities were present within the population of all warring states, and thus a large arms black market emerged and is still present. People were literally transporting grenades in hand bags on busses etc..

Another interesting video. One mistake you make in the video I would like to correct in regards to the scope. You said it had no range finding capabilities. That is not true. The numbers you thought were recommendations were actually range finding numbers. With a second focal plane scope and a duplex the small area of the duplex is set to subtend to a specific size, say 16 inches the average height of a deer from back to chest vertically. You simply adjust the scope power to where that fits in then look at the corresponding number on the scope. With a person set it where the shoulders are just in the smaller area of the duplex and it is at say 6x but the other number is 4 that is 400 yards. The ART scopes worked on the same principal but were more complex and self adjusted for elevation where that scope just was a range estimation and it was up to you to correct for range.
