Taarna's theme is beautiful, perfectly exmplifies the character. Her seemingly meek persona giving the fact that she's a woman without words but that persona is definitely not in keeping with her very aggressive warrior mantality. Elmer bernstein's score for Heavy metal is an unbelievable treasure and a film score enthusist's dream. A score i believe is his best out of all the scores he did in his long glorious career!
No kidding, I saw this movie as a kid when I was nine going on 10 31 years ago on Cinemax with other cool adult animation movies like Hey Good Looking, American pop and vampire hunter d and all became favorites since. I was in love with Taarna when I was a little boy especially hearts shot out of my eyes when she did her pool scene as she was like an Angel sent down from heaven. She was my childhood animated crush along with Belle from Disneys beauty and the beast, Daphne and Velma on scooby doo, Adora and Teela on heman and shera, princess Jasmine, Cleo on heathcliff, Callie Briggs Ann Gora and Felina feral on swat Kats, catwoman with Ivy Harley and red claw with batgirl on Batman TAS, Red from those Tex Avery shorts, Jessica Rabbit, Rogue from X-men tas, Shelia and Diana on dungeons and dragons, hello nurse and Minerva mink from animaniacs, Gadget in rescue rangers, April O’Neil, Ariel the mermaid, and more
Some of the greatest music I've ever heard in a film. This segment and story concept totally took me off guard for the tone that was the entire film before. All the adult humor and quirky scenes had nothing on Taarna. I could do to have a whole movie dedicated to the pact. Animated or live action, that could be one hell of a film.
One of the most amazing soundtracks ever!!!!! Elmer composed the most dynamic piece of music there could've ever been for an animated movie!!!!! Elmer's incredible scoring got him some of the most distinctive assignments throughout his wonderful career. Such as Heavy metal here and scoring major comedies such as Spies like us, Ghostbusters,Three amigos Funny farm and Trading places. And all movies needed Elmer's magical music to help push those stories along by in each of those movies and give each of them a life of their own, which neither one of those movies would've had without the music of the great Elmer bernstein!!!!
The Taarna segment is my favorite from the movie Heavy Metal. Taarna herself is a magnificent fantasy creation, a depiction of an idealized woman, beautiful, strong, and principled. Elmer Bernstein's score for the segment is also magnificent, one of my very favorites. It conveys the mysticism, majesty, and heroic quest of the moment, perfectly fitting the character.
I was 6 when I watched Heavy Metal. never forgot it. at 23 got it on DVD. I love this film. kick ass music, animation and Taarna. one of my early childhood animated heroes. One of many that inspired me to learn martial arts, swords, other weapons and ultimately enlist army infantry.
I was 11 when i saw this movie on Cinemax back in 93 with Hey Good Looking, American Pop and Vampire Hunter D and became one of my faves, i had a crush on Taarna growing up.
Yes i agree, such a fine and EXTREMELY rich score missing out on the awards is so unbelievable. Some people don't appreciate a great score when they here one,if i was ahead of those organizations Elmer bernstein's explosive Heavy metal score wouldve won every award there was!!!!
It was up against Raiders of the Lost Ark, Chariots of Fire, Dragonslayer, and Goldsmith’s Final Conflict (not nominated either in 1981). But it’s amazing how many incredible scores we used to get in the late 70s and early 80s.
This one of the most beautiful and powerful cues of Elmer's magical Heavy metal masterpiece!!!!! The beauty of the flutes as Taarna swims across the water is entrancing and the explosiveness of the full orchestra as she rises out of the pool is AMAZING!!!! Elmer bernstein proved with this score to be one the alltime masters of film scoring. This score and Craig safan's Remo williams soundtracks are 2 of the most amazing soundtracks ive ever heard and im honored to have them both on CD!!!!
I was a kid and watched this scene because of the music and the sword part where she gets ready for battle. My mom walks by “you’re always watching that part with the naked girl.”

Marvelous cue as the orchestra exploded beautifully as Taarna rose out of the water. This was always one of the many parts of this incredible score that always made me not being able to wait to get my hands on this score and im so happy to have finally caught up with it on CD!!!
If only Elmer Bernstein was to make music for Peter Jackson's LOTR Trilogy... I can imagine this music playing when Gandalf and Pippin arrive on Shadowfax on the top of the hill from where Minas Tirith is visible and when Gandalf says: 'The city of Kings', and when they are riding inside the city. Anybody agrees?
Bojan Boskovic That would have been awesome if the LOTR trilogy was older. This kind of theme is slightly dated. Howard Shore's theme fits the trilogy perfectly.
Silence is golden just like her sword. If you have read Plato's Republic you will notice that the golden sword represents the ruling philosopher kings, her silver hair represents the guardian military/police caste and the brown winged creature is the bronze worker caste
Taarna is just herself before she enters the water..after the cleansing waters. She slowly ascends the stairs to don her armor. Then the oath and the sword appears. She takes the sword and now she is now Taarak the Defender. The music is incredible paced slow at first then increasing until the end.
I was about to disagree with you, but then realized that Taarna gave HER life to protect the next defender (the little girl that her spaceman father came home to, with her owh bird)...
This sequence literally put Disney to shame . Ive always loved watching this and its not because of the nudity . It's beautifully done . Disney practically gave up on quality animation when HEAVY METAL was theatrically released .
This was before Trevor Jone's The Dark Crystal theme a year later. Both cheesy themes by Jones and Bernstein sound somewhat similar in a way. Haunting, epic, beautiful, cinematic, chilling, orchestrated, and powerful, in a method reminiscent to Miklos Rosza's epic classic scores.
"Steven and the Cluster" is nothing more than a Hugh pile of steaming Dog Shit....and I should know....my son watches that GAY-Ass garbage. Its Right up there with "Annoying Orange" and "Gravity Falls".....WTF Ever happened to F-ing Bugs Bunny??? Not the "new" shit but the good stuff that we All watched as children...
Technically, the show is called "Steven Universe", but you probably don't even care. That said, though it's evident we have opposite views on the show, I respect your opinion, even if you don't respect mine. Everybody is different, and I completely understand.
Reminds me of Ben Hur, Kings of the Sun, Conan the Destroyer, Forbudden zone and Bridge of Remagen I know that Ben Hur and Conan were not done bei E.R.
