I saw Dame Edna at the Moore Theatre in Seattle in January 2015 and got to talk with him out in the parking lot afterwards. He was happy that I have the DVD's of his shows "Neighbourhood Watch". Such a lovely man. The gladiolas he gave me lasted for a long time. I will always miss him. Rest in peace, sweet man.
What a remarkable set of guests on the stage at the same time. Even without any direct references, the intersection of ideas these three represent about gender and sexuality is just stunning.
An absolute Aussie legend, Barry Humphries will be sorely missed. I was lucky to see him years ago and his character portrayals were hilarious Dame Edna Everage (a twist on the word Average), Les Patterson and thought provoking, Sandy Stone. We got gladiolas and chux were thrown into the audience. He was an extremely intelligent and insightful comedian, poet and artist. Vale Sir Barry Humphries.
I saw him in Liverpool in the 90s. Bizarrely in the whole theatre there were about ten people, it was dead. He went on anyway and absolutely smashed it, in almost a private show. I felt sorry for him in a way that it could be so poorly attended, but he was devastatingly funny. A true professional
Wonderful Barry, (in my humble opinion) Australian entertainment's greatest export. I'm 58 now and it seems that Dame Edna has made me laugh all my life. I will miss Barry Humphreys enormously.
I saw Dame Edna some years ago on Stage & she was fantastic. Last year, I met Barry after his show & chatted to him for a few golden minutes! Rip Barry/Dame /Genius ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️❤
I saw Dame Edna 5 times on stage in London. In ‘ Back with a vengeance’ in 1989, she was raised on a crane like contraption in order to meet her paupers which were members of the audience sitting in ‘ the gods’. ‘ I’m very high up possums’ she said. ‘ Hope I don’t have any little involuntary reactions. Be it on your own heads if I do’. Wonderful memories.
No one touches the improvisational gifts of Barry Humphries. I saw him in concert in San Francisco several years ago and was blown-away how she/ he was able to literally create the performance on the spot interacting with the audience. Absolutely brilliant, nothing was planned and it was hystarical
I very vividly remember watching this when it originally aired. I haven't laughed that hard too many times in my 54 years now! It was absolutely hysterical! And Elton did "Philadelphia Freedom" for Billie Jean...anyone else think that maybe Billie & Elton were twins separated at birth & raised in different countries?? They looked so much alike for years.

I got to see the Dame and Sir Les no less than three times in the 1970s- I was a huge fan and we have lost a most remarkable and unique fun and laughs giving talent and razor sharp wit. Quite irreplaceable. RIP Barry Humphries - people will be mourning your passing all over the world ♥

It is interesting that performers like Elton John and Cher are true professionals. They recognize they Barry is there to do his performance and they support him by blending in and not distracting from his moment to shine.
From his autobiography (title escapes me, but well worth reading), here's one of his stories (slightly paraphrased by me) from his early childhood growing up in Melbourne, a very upper-middle class and staid community. On his street lived an extremely prim and proper family in the traditional mould: stay at home mother, banking executive father doing his daily 9-5, only child little girl, about 5 or 6. Being on her own, she got bored quite easily. She was allowed to play on the front lawn, but was strongly forbidden to venture beyond those boundaries. However, one day, something exciting happened. On the vacant plot next door on the other side of the chainlink fence, some builders turned up and started to lay the foundations for a new house. Of course, the girl was fascinated: so much more interesting than her dollies and other toys. She observed intently everything the guys did going about their duties. They in turn noticed her and idly chatted with her every now and again. The mother observed all of this, and talked privately with the foreman, who invited the little one over as a 'helper'. Overjoyed!! So for the next days and weeks, instead of a pretty dress, she put on 'work clothes & wellies' and did a few safe and undemanding jobs with the labourers for a couple of hours each day; Mother instructed her not to make a nuisance of herself by asking too many questions and be as quiet as possible and to do as she was told. She was especially in her element at smoko (breaktime), pretending to be Mother and pouring the tea for all the lads, listening intently to their conversations. Eventually, after a couple of weeks the guys had a whipround, and on their payday presented her with an envelope with a few dollars inside so she wouldn't feel left out. The little girl was ecstatic, and ran home to her mummy with it and wanted to go and buy some new toys. However, her mother was careful and cautious and told her they would have to open a bank account and save it for a 'rainy day'. (Girl was confused and didn't understand as they were always sunny days in that part of Australia.) So next day they went into town to visit her father's bank. Of course, the female teller recognised them and said to the little one: "Wow, so much money! Where did you get it from?" "I've been working on building a house next door.These are my wages!!" "Gosh! You're such a big girl now. Was it hard work?" "Oh, not too bad, thank you for asking." "Did you learn a lot?" "Yes, I think one day, when I grow up, I might join that profession." "And are you going to be doing any more building soon?" "Well, we will if the fucking bricks ever turn up. And we're going to be demanding more pay from that bloody bastard big boss!!"
Barry, they screeched and cancelled you.. they spat on your name and legacy. But we are all here supporting you. We all love you and always will... The screech will fade soon but your beauty will live on. Thanks dame and mate.
Billie Jean king loved every second of that and you could definitely see Barry and dame Edna definitely admired her for the great sports woman she was....
In 1962 Barry brought his show "A nice night's entertainment" from Sydney to Newcastle where I was 12 years old. There were posters on the telegraph poles advertising his show. My mother said he was too "riske" and that I should ignore him. At that age I really wanted to go to his show. He invented performance art, and used it to demonstrate how boring and politically correct was conservative Melbourne culture in the 1950s. It still is, those Melbournites really are up themselves. Anyway he came to Sydney and became a leader of new comedy in Australia. In have always loved his attack on Conservative society, and now miss him terribly. Dr Sir Les Patterson is my favourite character. No worries!

I’m lucky enough to have two delightful water colours 🖼 on my wall painted by the man himself, every time I look at them a smile comes across my face (with a touch of sadness) … he gave us decades of laughs ! 😌
