Elton didn't have much of an accent in this interview. They are such a great team and also such nice people. I flew Bernie at Elton's request to Atlanta from Burbank. Bernie was such a nice guy.
This has to be one of the best teaming of song writers...Bernie Taupin and Elton John. I saw Elton in concert last summer...at Metlife Stadium in New Jersey. He was phenomenal. My nephew went with me. It was a birthday gift from him and his fiancee. It was the best birthday gift I had in a long time.
Sadly, "The Last Song" is an universal song that is still relevant to this day... Some parents should learn how to love unconditionally to their kids, after all there is no better healer than a parents' love and care.
There'd be no Elton John without Bernie Taupin, no Bernie Taupin without Elton John. But, both are talented in their own right and as far as I'm concerned, one the greatest songwriting partnerships of all time.
What? The man's a legend. He's in the songwriters hall of fame, and he's very wealthy. He's received all the recognition he needs, as he's a very private person.
Haven’t heard this song in a long time. Bernie Taupin is an incredible writer. I’d love to see a song book of lyrics. Of course they can be found online but a book would be lovely to own. My favorite album is Captain Fantastic, the lyrics are amazing.
elton john can be very shy. i know this as my mom has been a fan and an admirer of his since 1974. Elton can across as being that way but he's not. He's great. We love your Elton and Bernie

Poor Arsenio...He should have never had these two legends on his pitiful so called "show." Gratefully, they were both equally magnanimous despite his horrible interviewing skills. Thank God and Greyhound Elton had Bernie in his life! I'm fairly confident he would not be the legend he is today without him, and I so appreciate how he equally recognizes this and give him his full credit and due! This is but one of the many hallmark qualities of Elton John! What a treasure! :)
William Attridge Boy did you call it. Aresenio STINKS at interviewing. Wow. I totally agree, Elton and Bernie put up with his juvenile antics in a very magnanymous way.
@@msginca I could never watch him. I found him very shallow. It's actually because he doesn't know these artists. So he's interviewing people and not having the deep background with them.
Legendary Talent. The real talented people always make it seem easy, writing the lyrics and music for all these great songs is not easy. Writing the lyrics and music for one of these great songs alone is not easy, look at all the one hit wonders over the years.
And then a few years later... Elton teamed up with Tim Rice and knocked it out of the park... though it is interesting how Elton seems to do his best work musically (over aggregate) when teamed up with Taupin
I was always impressed with EJ and how he managed to brush his back hair that high up. seriously though, I feel old because I remember this period like it was yesterday. the fashion, the chant show format, everything. where the hell did the last 25+ years go?
See, I don’t find Elton’s demeanor all that negative. People keep saying he’s bored or resentful of the attention Bernie’s getting; I think he’s just listening.
@@patriciagrandjean8205 I agree. He acted the same on Leno with Billy Joel. He’s just a smart ass that likes to joke. I didn’t see this as negative at all
Its so good to see Bernie and Elton on screen together! They look mildly pissed off. Elton singing The Last Song. I love this song. Lyrics as usual very eloquent. Thanks Bernie and Elton.
I think that other than in the actual movie ("And the Band Played On") this is The Best presentation I've seen of the song's meaning, origins, and performance, all rolled into one. Awesome.
you dont disregard bernie taupin unless you want to do the same with elton john.Thats how important he has been throughout eltons whole career. And id be pretty sure elton knows that much.Give the guy the credit he deserves because writing songs like he has is not easy either
Life long fan of both with huge intensity. Not so keen on the many generic sounding songs like this one that would come on albums. But nothing about that matters with Elton really as they'd always be enough to love regardless of that. And what about his staying power ? - beyond belief! I sometimes get the odd moment of pure excitement about his sound that he caused in the heyday
It's funny how Elton is saying he had never written a hit without Bernie. Just two years later he does the Lion King Soundtrack with Tim Rice which went 10x platinum by 1995 and won Elton an Oscar and a Grammy.
Taupin is such a major talent. His lyrics are layers deep, so insightful and profound. And I believe they are that which inspired Elton to write the great songs that he did. Without Taupin , Elton ' s song are average at best. Great team
+Ben TEN TEN That's interesting...my wife and I were eating our Valentine's day dinner and we heard Parton's "I Will Always Love You"...and I said to my wife, "That's Dolly, right?" and she said "yea, I like her version", and I said, "yea but it was Whitney that put it on the map because of her voice", and she said, "that's right"....I said, "That song, which is beautiful in its own right, would still be just a pretty song had it not been for Houston", and she agreed....cool we were just talking about that today and I just read your post above......
They’re both special. Without Elton’s music, Taupin’s lyrics wouldn’t have touched us as hard. Without Taupin’s lyrics, Elton’s music wouldn’t have touched as hard
FUNBAG FACT! Keanu Reeves wore Dolly Parton's "Playboy Bunny" Outfit, on All Hallows Eve 1978. (Keanu Reeve's Mother made/Sewed the Outfit, according to i just made it up.)
Funny how when someone prefaces their comment with "I don't mean to sound disrespectful," they usually end up saying something completely disrespectful.
It's an odd thing to say "this man" when referring to someone sitting right next to you... feels like "the interviewer" was creating distance from his guest...
Thought it was interesting (and perhaps something one wouldn't expect) to see Bernie Taupin at a PBR (Professional Bull Riders) event. Turns out he was co-owner of one of the sport's legendary bucking bulls, Little Yellow Jacket. For me it was a pleasant surprise, but of course some in the anti-rodeo crowd would no doubt hold this against him.
Malgorzata Piotrowska, I can tell that you're a true Elton fan like me(48yrs.& counting). Some people comment on every Elton interview & say they're a true Elton Fan Girl; then in a few years they move on to someone else or another GROUP! I can't stand people like that! In my opinion, they are looking for attention & not real Elton Fans. They even record themselves at Elton concerts & scream their heads off so much so that the people near them can't hear the music! Also, some people paste their room with photos of Elton for about 10 yrs. & then change them later & put up photos of another GROUP or singer! I'm sorry if I come off as being judgemental; but, when it comes to Elton, I'm very serious & dedicated to Elton! I like other singers & groups; but, I'm totally enamoured with Elton's talent & Bernie's talent! They truly are brothers, which Elton never had! It's in his auto-biography "ME". Thanks for hearing me out You're an honest Elton fan! ☮️
@@aisu825 Wow. I will have to check that out. I heard their version of "Lady Samantha" and thought Elton was more like they normally are than they were on that record!
@@lemurianchick Quite a few big stars were interested in Elton and Bernie's early catalog. I think once Elton became a superstar, the futility of trying to top the original was clear and we didn't see it much after 1971. Here's Aretha Franklin covering Border Song right around the time it was released. The title is listed incorrectly as "Border Song (Holy Moses)." ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OzY45mZNIHU.html
Legends !!!....If bernie was gay they will be the perfect couple, but they are like brothers so i am happy they found eachother i love them and their songs.
It's extremely difficult to interview somebody when you know absolutely nothing about them. Arsenio looks like a complete fool throughout this entire interview, and it is his fault, because it is his job to learn all he can about his guests pre-interview. I understand that all talk show pre-interview's are done with staffers, but for somebody as complex and important as Taupin/John, Arsenio should have done his research. I guess he was too busy out drinking/partying with Eddie Murphy to worry about his show. Really sad when you go back and watch the old Arsenio Hall Shows, and you see what a terrible host he was. Elton and Bernie deserve so much more than this. I feel sorry that they had to waste their time on his show.
Well spoken my friend...you know Arsenio is not even remotely an Elton John fan, and that's fine. But he wasn't even listening to Elton. Twice he told Arsenio that Bernie writes the words first, and then Elton writes the music to those lyrics. So then he proceeds to ask Bernie how their writing works...who writes what first. Brutal You're exactly correct. Arse Hall(LOL!!!) is a horrible interviewer.
tsh85 unfortunately this was Arsenio‘s issue with the majority of his guest. He really didn’t pay a lot of attention to what they were saying so he could reply correctly and he didn’t know whole lot about the persons so he could give us more information about the artist that he has on the show. Someone said earlier that Elton John was pouty because his partner was getting all the questions, I don’t think that was the case, I think it was because he was bored; it really was a boring interview
Could not agree more. This looks like the time when AH started taking himself too seriously, becoming political ('X' cap), not paying attention, uttering zingers to his guests and trying to chuckle it away when nobody found it funny but him. This was a really cringe-worthy interview. In fact, I'd say, if it weren't for Taupin being the regular guy, the straight man (not sexually, though that is true, but not a character like AH and Elton), to help the interview flow, this would have been even more a disaster. AH was really thrown by Elton tossing out gay stuff here and there. Such a novice, man. He was good for about a year, then not.
The highest paid singer in the world,Elton holds number one as the most singles sold for the tribute song to the late Lady Diana.Michael Jackson was a great artist as a singer but Elton is a great musician and singer..I'm not saying that Elton is better than Michael but go and search the facts and stop putting these two unbealiveable artist down, lets thank them for their music.Three of the best were, ET, MJ & EP.It's as simple as that...
I'm sure Elton can't dance or beat box like Michael. He also can't write lyrics like Michael. I love them both, they are both geniuses. I love Bernie too. He's a genius with words
Arsenio asks some stupid questions and I'm sure that is why Elton is getting pissy. He is not easy to interview and if you ask stupid questions he will let you know it.
I think Arsenio got off on the wrong foot with Elton when he got into the "which comes first, the lyrics or music" topic that has already been discussed and documented ad nauseam before. It's at that point that Elton seems to get distracted and lose interest in the conversation. EJ/BT Fan Since 1974!
Fuck you. Not everyone knows that. He is asking for "John Q Public", dumbass. Just because you know the back story doesn't mean everyone else does. Now go and fuck yourself and sin no more.
It really shows how uncomfortable Arsenio Hall is with himself. He can't just talk to two legendary songwriters about their craft. He has to force strange "humor" into it. It's no wonder his show didn't stand the test of time.
I only wish to have a free meeting with elton and bernie in Atlanta, up high on one's building. You 2, me and whoever I bring :) and time schedule must be flexible :)
I'm glad that Arsenio Hall had Elton and Bernie on the show. But, Arsenio, please don't talk over your guests when you're interviewing them. Arsenio is also a very ill-prepared interviewer. He often asks very cliche, tired questions.
GOD BLESS IT, THIS IS PAINFUL to watch. Arsenio is likable enough but God, what an amateur. Why the heck were they even BOOKED on his show? If I were interviewing Elton John I'd spend about a month preparing for it and wouldn't make myself look like an ass. Ugh.
It seems strange that Arsenio is asking Elton and Bernie such uninformed, basic questions. He had them on the show in January '90, which seemed to go better and was actually funny. Seems Arsenio knows Elton is getting pissed and things just get more awkward.
What was the point of the interview? Anyone who hasn't lived in a cave knows how they met, how they write, Yada Yada yada.... why not ask questions about his rehab, how his life has changed, the sell-off of his costumes?
It's okay to put the shutters up occasionally. Being a public figure is not easy, believe me. My wall goes up everyday. It's a mechanism that protects me from what might happen. So, it's okay.
Tough crowd. I thought Arsenio did fine. If Letterman or Leno interviewed Dr. Dre or Run DMC, that wouldn't be in their wheelhouse either. That doesn't mean they should throw their hands up and not do it.
Yeah, those might be tough interviews, totally dependent upon the guest and how well they jived with Letterman or Leno or whomever that wasn't into Hip Hop. Still, I think Leno would at least have some good questions and is smart and quick enough to roll with whatever came up.
Really...?? I thought Arsenio sucked.... we Americans; are so juvenile and crass about money. to be fair; I think the crowd was not too much into Elton or Bernie, either.
This host - Arsenio Hall - is so annoying that I gave up trying to listen to what Bernie had to say; why does he have to keep sniggering at everything, what is the point?
Your comment is an embarrassment. Produce and promote your own talk show and see if you can outperform Arsenio. It’s almost like you don’t know Elton is gay and was flirting with Arsenio.
@@MyOneFiftiethOfADollar I have always loved Arsenio but Linda’s right. What a terrible interview. I understand the black community, especially back then, was very uncomfortable with gay shit. He’s not interviewing gay dudes though, he’s interviewing legends and doing an absolute shit job. Fuck you.
