The studio version with a young Elton’s voice is staggering. He and Bernie deserve the descriptions of genius’

Great reaction guys.... And yes there were 2 other original band members there. The drummer and the lead guitarist. I used to live in Watford in England and Elton owned the football club... (He was born nearby). He used the stadium there to put on a couple of concerts back in the day. I was able to sit in my back garden and just listen to all this great music wafting over on the wind. Good times. The man has talent just oozing out of his fingers. Keep on Rocking

Believe it’s Davey Johnson on guitar, Dee Murray on bass and Nigel Olsen on drums, the original album line up. But I’m willing to be corrected. I’ve always loved this intro to the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album.

You are spot on about Davey on the guitar and Nigel on the drums, however Dee unfortunately passed away in 1992.

It's Bob Birch on bass but a few years after this gig he committed suicide as I believe he had depression which is so sad.

@@jamesboyce4000 He was in severe pain and severe medical issues from an accident years ago when he was hit by a car when crossing the street causing multiple leg fractures and spine damage. I suppose this lead to his suicide.

If it wasn't for Elton John pianos wouldn't even exist I strongly believe it was because of this man that got everyone into wanting to try playing the way that he plays what an absolute legend that man is. Big fan from day one it's coming upto his farewell tour soon

Some are original members. The drummer here, Nigel Olsson, has been with Elton on and off since 1969, and was on one song from his first album, Empty Sky. The original bassist, Dee Murray, passed away in 1992. The guitarist Davey Johnstone is an original member, he played on Madman Across the Water in 1971 and joined the band on Honkey Chateau in 1972.

Keep in mind with the music. Yes Elton 'wrote' it, but the band came up with their own parts, basically hearing the tune once and then going into the studio together and more or less riffing. According to the band and Elton himself, Elton did not interfere with that process. Each guy did what they wanted. They just knew each other and it coalesced very quickly and naturally. With the lyrics, Elton would rarely spend more than 15 minutes per song putting it to music. The band would listen to Elton play the basic music and figure out what they wanted to do, go into the studio, mess around a bit, and then just...play. They could write and fully record (including overdubs, backing vocals, everything) at a rate of about 4 songs a day. After a shaky start, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, a double album, was completed in 2 weeks. They routinely made so many songs that they had excellent tunes that didn't fit on the albums, so the singles often had unique songs on the B-side too. They would routinely play songs in concerts from the album that hadn't been released yet, as a treat for the fans. They were nuts. If I remember correctly, Elton has had 57 US Top 40 hits (and 69 Top 40 hits in the UK) in his career.

The first pop/rock concert I ever went to was Elton John, at the Hammersmith Odeon in West London, in 1982. I was a 'fan' of sorts. knew the hits, wasn't too familiar with all the albums . . . and he goes and opens with this. It's been my favourite music track ever since. I've seen him in concert on three other occasions, and this autumn (lockdowns being over, we all hope) I will be seeing him twice at the O2 Arena. Twice? Well, this was originally intended to be last autumn/winter, and I booked a date in November. Then he announced some extra days in December, and I thought, why not, it's only money, so I bought a ticket for the very last show of the tour. Might be some special guests on, who knew. Then Covid happened, the tour was postponed and then rescheduled, and what was originally a six-week gap between dates was now just two weeks! Oh well, you can't get too much of a good thing. Agreed, the voice isn't what it was, but hey, it's Elton. All that was to say that this track is on the set list so I'll hear him play it at least twice more! As others have pointed out, there are two originals in the band on the video, Davey Johnstone on guitar and Nigel Olsson on drums. The sound on the original is amazing. You got a bit of it here, but Davey's guitar is literally screaming at the end. A full review of the whole album would be most welcome! Going back for a moment to the Moody Brothers (which is how I will always think of the Moody Blues from now on) how about a Moody review? A lot of people would vote for one of their earlier albums but I only became a fan when they made a comeback, so I would suggest 'Long Distance Voyager'. I suggest it because it has my second favourite ever track, a song called 'Nervous'. And although I have never see the Moodies in concert, I have seen John Lodge sing this song, which is one he wrote.

The drummer (Nigel Olsson) and guitarist (Davy Johnston) played on the original album and also song all backing vocals along with the v talented bass player Dee Murray who has sadly passed. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was his sixth studio album and his first double album. His contract with his label, which ran from 1969-76 was for 2 albums a year! Imagine a modern artist producing that many albums of such great quality in an equal period of time (on top of touring etc)

I always feel, if you haven’t heard the song yet, you should always start with the studio version. Especially masterpieces like this. In my opinion, this doesn’t even come close to the album version.
