I don't see that Elvis ever understood how great he was and the Colonel never let him out of the sack he had him in. If Elvis would have gotten out into the world he might have met others and dropped the Colonel. The Colonel was in fear of Elvis out growing him and Elvis was in fear of losing his fans. Elvis generosity kept his dad on the verge of a heartattack which kept him in sync with the Colonel. The drugs gave Elvis the energy to do his shows and keep the pain of his illnesses at bay. Elvis believed at one time the drugs were healing him when in fact they were killing him. Bless his heart, all he wanted to do was keep his family out of poverty and help others in need. This question will be debated to the end of time. R.I.P Elvis you are still so missed. ❤😢

I am reading June Juanico's book now. The book is great. She gives an inside view to Elvis in the early days. Parker had him doing 2-3 shows per day almost every single day. Elvis was exhausted. He was working Elvis to a frazzle. June hated Colonel bc he worked Elvis like a dog so Parker could sell Elvis' photos and make big bucks for himself. Meanwhile, he deprived Elvis of relationships like the one with June. So no rest, no deep relationships, no control of his life....Elvis was not healthy- mentally, physically, or spiritually. He was a prisoner of Parker's greed. He was always worried his career would end. Parker made sure Elvis believed it could happen so as to control Elvis.

He fed off the audience, that was his barometer of how he was doing. His fans were why he worked so hard. His fans were his real family, they were everything to him. He was very generous to them and never tired of signing autographs and having his picture made. His fans were who got him there and kept him on top. They are how he is still so popular today. I was 12 in 1956 when I saw him on Sullivan, he was magic to me then, and still magic to me at 80 years old. I am the type of fan that will globber you if you trash Elvis. Thanks.

Can you imagine how different and better of a life Elvis could have had if Tom Parker put Elvis first and not himself first. If he had his dream come true and had been able to perform out of US I feel it would have changed everything for him. Also maybe if he could have played in A Star is Born everyone would have been able to see how good of an actor he was and not just an actor that can sing in movies. He really lost time having to fulfill the contracts they TP had him do because he wanted so much more as an actor.
@user-yz3fe6qj2l
@user-yz3fe6qj2l 3 месяца назад
It wasn't for Elvis ti decide. It was his manager who arranged the movie contracts and the deals. And Parker was only interested in Elvis making money. The result was Elvis became fed up by those movies and he revealed it many many times, but there was no way out because he was bound to the contracts...

I think Elvis was constantly trying to get to a point in his movie making career that was fulfilling in the roles and stories he was trying to portray, but it never happened for him. It’s the brass ring he never grasped, and it cost him his time, popularity, and emotional health as his creativity was stifled.

I was 11 when Heartbreak Hotel was released. Pre his Army induction in 1958, girls my age were obsessed with Elvis music and his 4 movies. After he returned in March 1960, we watched him on the Frank Sinatra Timex Welcome Elvis show. I was then 15 yrs old and a sophomore. My friends and I commented that Elvis had a more cleaned up grow up image, wearing a tux and singing without moving much. It is obvious that Col Parker thought Rock and Roll would not last and or that 25 yr old guys should not be singing it and moving in a sexual ways. I did go to his first 2 post Army movies, but after that I did not bother. I got married in 1964, and I recall in the later 60s seeing a few of his movies at the drive inn movies. His mid to later movies were pretty lame. Music changes constantly, and there were The Beach Boys, The Beatles , Rolling Stones, Simon and Garfunkel, the Righteous Bros and so many other releasing hit songs and appearing on TV shows. My husband and I watched the 68 special and were amazed how Elvis was better than ever. Also, post Army he released It’s Now or Never, Are You Lonesome tonight and other ballads. Meanwhile Franke Valley and the 4 Seasons, other singers and groups were keeping up with the times. Elvis had so many people depending on him for income, I think he was afraid of not following Parker’s bad advice. Parker lied to Elvis, making false promises about better movie scripts. Elvis, had he been on late night and other TV shows, would have shown his sense of humor and pleasing personality to the masses. Had he been able to tour other countries he would have stepped up to the challenge and been offered better songs by song writers.

Here is an album from 1963 that could have been Side 1, 1-Memphis Tennessee, 2-Witchcraft, 3- It Hurts Me, 4- Western Union, 5- Ask Me. Side 2, 1- Devil in Disguise, 2-Please Don't Drag That String Around, 3- Love Me Tonight, 4- What Now, What Next, Where To, 5-Never Ending. Remember this is Pre-Beatles. This is a solid 1963 album.

We missed Elvis at his very best. If Elvis would've toured in the 60's we wouldn't be having a debate about the greatest of all-time (Beatles, MJ etc). It would be all over. Those 1961 Hawaii & Memphis shows (poor quality and no video) give us just a glimpse into what it could've been like for Elvis in the 60's.

I agree with your toughts. I became an Elvis fan in the early 70s and, as I live in Brazil, things arrived a little late here. My first positive memory was hearing his songs on the radio, but the turning point was when I watched King Creole on TV. One of the best memories of my life. The films Elvis made in the 60s didn't catch my attention as much. I believe that the Colonel's money-making formula had the double mistake of abandoning TV and quality musical albums in favor of making low-budget films with maximum returns. If the films had better quality during this period, the impact would not be so negative on Elvis' career.

The bottom line was Colonel Parker was all about the money at the end of the day. His strategy worked for a good while but as you pointed out, it seemed to dry up with tv variety shows being the big deal in the late 60’s to early 70’s. Movies made colonel the most money, but in the long run it was bad for Elvis’s career.

We all assume that if he would have stayed on tv he would be covering strong material but a lot of bands and singer were started to record their own material so already that was becoming a problem so I am not convinced that staying on tv would have actually contributed to his staying power. The fact that he was only available on film contributed also a bit to the mystique around Elvis and hence contributed to the success of the comeback special and his return to Vegas. I have seen so many performers who had numerous tv appearances in the sixties but were not very sucessfull in the later part compared to Elvis (Glen Campbell, Jerry Lee Lewis, Tom Jones) amongst a few that never really leveled the stardom that Elvis experienced between 1969-1977 .

I agree he should have picked an occasional TV show to be on to reach the younger audience, but also it was alot different back then. It was commonly seen as a big step down for a movie star to do television. But I wish he would have done an occasional live performance on, say an Ed Sullivan show or something. ⚡

I agree-in retrospect Elvis would have stayed in the public eye more if he would have carefully chosen the right tv vehicles in the early to mid-60’s. Ed Sullivan, The Hollywood Palace, cool tv specials, etc. The vast majority of people going to see Elvis movies were his old fans from the 50’s, not really new ones. Look at Michael Jackson as a perfect example-he DID not want to do Motown 25 because he wanted no more tv appearances. He had to be convinced by Berry Gordy to do it and his iconic version of “Billie Jean” is his most famous performance ever.

Thank you for this video. I think what is important to be remembered is the fact that at that time (early 60's) any further Elvis ' television appearances would only have been seen in America; the rest of the world wouldn't see them. However, an Elvis movie would be seen around the world, thereby satisfying his fans everywhere! So, I can understand Col Parker's thinking....hit the biggest audience in the easiest way. In my opinion the slump in Elvis' movie career came about due to poor scripts rather than lack of exposure.

I totally agree with you and the answer to all these problems starts with Parker. He mismanaged Elvis horribly. Yet still, Elvis’ talent still prevailed. Can you imagine had Parker not been so narrow minded? Kept Elvis doing mini tours like ‘57. Made an appearance on a tv special once a year, like the Timex Special with Sinatra. Always with Elvis as the center of attention, but with other greats around him. Only do the films he wanted, and not do the ones forced upon him. One really good film a year. One really great tv appearance. Sprinkled with several mini tours in larger venues. Go outside of the US. Tours in Europe, Asia, Australia……. But there was Parker. Standing in his way.

I wonder did the movie contracts even allow him.to do TV apoearances? Parker stifled Elvis,s career in so so many ways, firstly obligated to 3 movies a year, then a 2nd noose of the monotony of Vegas and a grueling touring schedule, such a travesty. 😔

I think Elvis was loyal to Parker, and credited him for all his success. He was too trusting, and embraced the two people most responsible for destroying him, Parker, and Beaulieu, who came to live close to Graceland when she was just shy of her eighteenth birthday. I don’t think Elvis ever fully had confidence in or comprehended the magnitude of his talent and magnetism, which made him vulnerable to exploitation by these two and others.

I completely agree with you. This is one of the many reasons why I hate Parker so much and I get so angry with those who (even today) call him a "great" manager, he absolutely wasn't, he was a dullard who managed to function just a few years in the 50s, then he just lived on "income". Unfortunately, I am becoming more and more convinced that in addition to being a great manipulator, he really had hypnotic "skills", because otherwise I really can't understand why Elvis never rebelled, and I become more and more convinced of these "skills" of his when I read old interviews or biographies and people who criticize Parker are really rare, as if when people arrived in the presence of this ignoble being, they all remained "fascinated" by him (even reading the books written by A.Nash, at the beginning she criticizes him but when she gets to know him in person, you feel that her perception of the man has changed).....inexplicable.....I find him irritating just by looking at in photographs, a "skin" sensation and sometimes I wonder if I really had him known if I would have been a victim like the others. However at the end of all: how much more satisfactions Elvis could have had that he didn't get thanks to that asshole!!!
@ElvisistheMan_
@ElvisistheMan_ 3 месяца назад
Yeah, I actually think that he tried to hypnotize people. I remember learning about that somewhere. But, I always thought the reason Elvis never rebelled too much was because he was passive. Maybe there was some manipulation involved.

63’ was the year that broke Elvis’ career. Four things he should have done that year and didn’t, cost him his thrown. First, he should have released the “Lost Album.” Second, he should have toured to promote the “Lost Album.” Third, he should have gone back on probably the Ed Sullivan show to promote the album and recruit new Elvis fans. Finally, four, both the Viva Las Vegas movie and album should have been released in December. If Elvis had done these things, there may have never been a British Invasion, or at least Elvis would have remained more current for a longer period of time.

Yes I agree. Sadly there were great studio cuts throughout the 60's they just were NOT put together on one cohesive album, most albums then had 10-12 cuts and Elvis easily has that from studio records from 1960-1968. But the lack of TV appearances certainly did hurt him in more than one way, it did affect his fans but it also stunted him as an artist. I like the idea of maybe at least some touring, a couple tv appearances and the movies. The studio songs are there they just were not packaged correctly.

I remember seeing this interview a while ago too. I agree I don't think it's good business decisions to do stuff like that. If you want an artist or anyone who's in business to be successful you want to have a diversified portfolio. You could have been doing like you said a couple TV appearances promoting singles, I would say a couple studio albums, one movie a year therefore would be a high-quality movie, and a tour. And of course I wouldn't want him working all year like we'd have to give him breaks. Like each quarter of the year since there's four quarters he would do one of those things. Every time I listen to the business decisions that went on I just wish I could have did something cause I studied business in college and I'm still learning about it now and I just would have done so many different things that would have made him happier.

Elvis' GOD given talent, needed no useless ex-carny, being the Colonel. The Colonel took Elvis to Vegas in '56 and was a flop! The good movie scripts offered to Elvis, the Colonel declined, due to Blue Hawaii being his biggest box office hit with 14 songs, in the movie. Almost messed up the '68 comeback special, with 32 or so christmas songs, to only finish off with a "good night", at the end of the show. Thanks to Steve Binder, putting a halt to that! '69 comeback wasn't filmed as what "That's the way it is", was filmed. Live at Madison Square Gardens wasn't filmed as was " Elvis on tour", filmed. And last, " Aloha from Hawaii ", was to be Elvis' world wide concert tour, due to an illegal immigrant, named the Colonel, didn't want Elvis out of his sight, and if travelled with Elvis overseas, then the Colonel may have had difficulties in re-entering the U.S. In summary, the Colonel messed up in more ways than one, and that being also Elvis' tv appearances were scarce in the 60's. Good one Colonel! Sam Phillips would have been a much better manager, due to his artistic brain!

Hi David. When you think of it, Elvis was very assessable to the press during the earliest part of his career, at least until he signed with Parker. After that, even interviews became scarce. When he did interview he became so cautious, that a question about any female involvement could make him stumble because he had been so highly coached by Parker to maintain the good boy image. This too added to the Presley mystique yet we have learned from this that there is a fine line between mystique and obscurity. Colonel Parker is regarded as a brilliant, even genius, manager yet his mistakes were many. The biggest being that he took the golden goose and camouflaged it.

But like I said in the past, the 68 Special was dominated by movie songs! Nobody talks about that! Elvis closing number to every concert Can't Help Falling in Love was from Blue Hawaii. Those movies entertained me as a kid growing up. We all know he could of been a great actor doing major movies, but no past or living Superstar could of done those films and been successful. Only him. But it's true, Elvis deserved better, it was Parker who guided him to do these films. . Elvis should have fired him, but he was too loyal to a fault. 😢

---------------- on the surface, what you say sounds reasonable, but without his lackluster mid 60s, he would not have been ultra stimulated to make such a stellar comeback. You could just hear in his 68-70 vocals, how enthusiastic he was. Its as if he rediscovered his voice all over again, than turbo charged it. Back to 1st point, so powerful was Elvis, that he is statistically the #2 artist /act/band of the 1960's decade. You'd think Stones or Supremes, but just that short spurt early 60s and late 60s was enough for him to nearly be #1 in the 60s

You make it sound so doom and gloom. Even with all you said, he is still loved and remembered all over the world. Still biggest selling solo artist ever, still selling songs, he is in top 10 streaming platforms. Still very successful. Movie was a block buster hit, shows ( him on screen with orchestra last Nov ) and exhibit in London England a hit, Graceland is most visited home in USA, now Elvis Evolution coming, Vegas ( CNN just aired Vegas soecial) still says Elvis revolutionized the place and his impersonators and attractions of him bring thousands yearly, another project in the works with Baz as well. Still so much for someone who passed 47 years ago.

I think Parker and Priscilla were both toxic for Elvis. They both gave him frustration and pain and harmed him more than helped him.

It really makes a lot of sense. I think Elvis was just so loyal to Parker that he just felt like he had to do what Parker told him was the thing to do. I think just maybe he believed Parker was right because after all, Parker got him to where he was. I wish he hadn't been so loyal. He was always afraid it would end.

Elvis needed a good manager. I wish he had done that too. I think he would have been happier and he may have lived longer. I was at Graceland two weeks ago. I loved everything, but I don’t think he would have liked it.

I'm sure the Colonel played on Elvis' (and Vernon's) paranoia about being poverty-stricken again. In a single year (1956) Elvis dragged his extended family out of poverty and wanted them all to stay there. The movies were guaranteed easy money and not as tiring as touring. I felt exhausted just reading about the touring in the 50s in Guralnick's first book and likewise in the 70s with over 1100 shows. As for TV appearances, he just seemed to prefer movies both as an actor and a viewer. I think he was a very private person off stage, rarely attended any award ceremonies, didn't go to Hollywood parties and would not have enjoyed being grilled on a talk show or similar.

Yeah I think it was only 3 weeks of work (making movie) and more profit. Elvis dint have to tour like he did in 54-55. Just maybe 20-40 shows

I wonder if his answer would have been different had he been making better films (occasionally) rather than just churning out the same old thing because he was committed to a contract, Elvis always wanted to be a movie star but not in the sort of films he was making, those films made a joke of him that cost him his career in the 60s. Thank goodness Steve Binder told it to him straight and helped put him back where he belonged.

Parker worn Elvis out with the movie making, the first movies are not so bad, perdonally I love many of them, but then he did dreadful movies,because he had to do them, when Parker wanted to do another movie contract, none wanted to spend that money, yes parker put Elvis in the map but just saw a making-money machine for his own benefit and exploited Elvis to his death, never saw him as a human, as a man who has dreams, parker killed Elvis soul and his love for making music, Elvis had so much potential, needed the right person, he wanted to play dramatic roles and you mentioned it, Barbra Streisand wanted him for A star is born, I can assure Parker had something to do with Elvis not signing to do it, moreover Elvis was stuck performing in the US, never toured overseas, to go to Canada Parker didn't require documents that's why is the only country outside the US where Elvis went, love your channel

Your theory is quite plausible, and probably hits the proverbial nail on the head. Unfortunately, your theory cannot be tested, and all we can do is to speculate. There are countless “what if?” decision points in every life.

The biggest issue with these discussion's is they are all with hindsight which as we all know is 20/20. Elvis was contracted to 3 albums a year by RCA so a movie soundtrack was an easy way to solve this and if they were short we got bonus tracks or a Pot Luck, Something For Everyone or even a His Hand In Mine to keep things legal. Most of Elvis`s movies made money so speed over quality was the priority and its worth mentioning the 60`s is littered with beach movies and teen movies that were really bad so this is not just an Elvis thing. TV entertainment shows were aimed at a more mature audience at that time, with Shindig, Ready Steady Go and one or two others being the exception.

I kinda wonder had Elvis performed more in the 60's and done less movies,would he have continued into the 70's?? I mean in '69 Elvis was really raring to get back on stage being finally done with those movies. It might not have had the frenzy that Elvis generated in the 70's coming back if he performed constantly in the '60's. The difference also with the Beatles is that they wrote their own songs!!! Elvis didn't and had to look for material that he loved to make then his own version of. Maybe he would have burned out by '69 because of this. Maybe he would have become a "Ratpack" kind of singer,having his weekly half hour show like a Sammy Davis or a Frank Sinatra. Things do happen for a purpose, and when Elvis came back from '69 onwards, he found his same passion again like when he started out. Many paths a person can take but always with another outcome

Elvis did the Sinatra special that would have got him more adult fans and fitted the direction he was going as a respected singer. The Beatles hadn't happened so there was no competition for him. If the Beatles and Elvis had appeared on the Ed Sullivan or TV every year it wouldn't have had the same impact it would be over milking the cow. I wouldn't change anything much about Elvis carer and don't see the 60s as a failure of you want failure look at other artists from the 50s would had 2 hits and sang the same songs throughout thier careers. Elvis grew as a singer and artist but it wasn't just about being taken seriously by critics. If Elvis had been on TV regularly the 68 Special would not have had the same impact same with Aloha. After Aloha it all went downhill but there was no where else to go but down. I actually think some of his best work came out of that down period so in if we changed anything it wouldn't have had such diversity and range. We assume everything would be a hit because its Elvis and we love him but his career could have gone done the pan if he had gone in the diirection the critics wanted him to go.

I grew up back in that time. Not not not not not not going to be born when the Beatles hit the USA yes and he would have done Johnny Carson or David Letterman and did another song I mean even in the 70s I don't remember all the years I mean if you just come out and done there's reasons why he wouldn't think separate ways in public I mean we all should know that if you don't I'm sorry but that's the only song on that album that I've heard so far that wasn't a previous song it was a One released record from what I've heard so far I'll go check it on Google myself and find out speedway and spin out and I was getting into the early years on the radio because I mean he didn't he didn't he put out like I did a loss of performances in Vegas and he would come out and did just attend on the TV show man to promote that record did Carl Whitman real manager Colonel Tom Parker I'm out of here

poor elvis was devasted by the loss of one of his co stars Judy who died during the filming of Jail House Rock.. he was about to enter to the Army but had to finish up the movie first and when he heard the news of his co star he really got shook up about it. Elvis was so devastated by the news of her death that he initially refused to watch Jailhouse Rock at the time. The King told a reporter: “Nothing has hurt me as bad in my life. I remember the last night I saw them. They were leaving on a trip.The news made national headlines, and the following morning a heartbroken Elvis knocked on the door of his friend George Klein. Klein recalled: "He said, ‘I’ve got some bad news. Judy Tyler just got killed in a car wreck.’ So we drove around Memphis, talking about, reminiscing about her. How nice she was, how professional she was, and how tragic it was that she was killed in a car accident when her first big motion picture was coming out. And he took it pretty tough." Fike added: "It really upset him. He broke down and cried … Elvis couldn’t get over it. He gave an interview to the Commercial-Appeal saying he didn’t think he could stand to ever watch the movie. And he meant it at the time."

If he would have done more benefit concerts throughout the 60 like the 1961 Hawaii benefit shows it would have definitely helped his career. After 64 majority of his movies were very poor.
