Actually, in this movie, Elvis’ trademark sideburns were gone. He had shortened them already in preparation for going into the army. He knew he would get an army buzz so he started losing the sideburns ahead of time. Right after filming this movie, Elvis went into basic training.

This movie King Creole, was the last of what I like to call Elvis' Big 4, meaning his first 4 movies. "Love Me Tender," "Loving You," "Jailhouse Rock," and "King Creole." These were the best of all of his movies, even though he had others sprinkled in there. Also, another thing to note is that pretty much in every Elvis movie, there's gonna be at least one fight scene, sometimes several. He even played a boxer in Kid Galahad, another really good movie. After this movie, Elvis left for the Army for 2 years in Germany, and after he came back, he recorded a fantastic album called Elvis Is Back. He did the Frank Sinatra TV show and also did a great show in Hawaii in 1961 to raise money to complete the project to build a memorial for the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor. After that, he did 3 movies a year for the next 8 plus years.

I think you would really appreciate the clip of his song "Crawfish" for this same movie, which was very innovative for its era. It also featured him singing a duet with a great African-American singer named Kitty White -- also a bit bold for a movie from the pre-Civil Rights era, having a white-black duet -- in the opening scene of the movie, no less. --Marie
