Billy I found your channel last week and I have fell in love, I have been watching on my smart TV and I had not Subscribed but I have now I will tell all my friends to do this also. I live in Louisville Kentucky and you are right we're starting to look more like Memphis lol.
@@SpaGuy To Be Honest, I had Never Heard of the Rialto Hotel(Sure My Daddy knows About it Though) Just the Palace ~ I Found this article that tells what happened to it , if you like to take a peek www.scottymoore.net/louisville55.html
@@SpaGuy One More thing, not sure if you were able to get to Freedom Hall ~ Its Still There and Hosts Events (Not as Many Since We Got the Yum Center) Elvis played there a Couple of Times, including 1974 ( the year My Mom saw him in Concert) I know Your Busy with Elvis Week Coming up ~ Maybe if you didn't get by there , Another Time 😊 Here is an article about it www.courier-journal.com/picture-gallery/entertainment/2018/12/06/elvis-presley-concerts-photos-louisville-kentucky-king-rock-and-roll/2226164002/
Love this kind of Elvis history. Really unbelievable that Elvis got a wiggle ban on stage though. It sounds to funny to be true but unfortunately it is. Great viewing again Spa Guy, thanks👍😎
good video thank you from a kentucky fan! sharing this..wow that armory!! and the hotel..fantastic and gorgeous wonder what room he stayed in ...love love love this video thanks!!!! i laughed so hard.. wiggle ban lol
Hey Spa guy! Great video! You were right there where they Rialto was ;-) it is the parking garage is where it was! They did, sadly, tear it down. I did the same thing you're doing a few years ago and learned a lot! There is some great history there! Back in the forties and fifties, 4th Street was the place to be as it was recently before covid-19 hit. Right next door is where the Mary Anderson theater was. If you look close enough at the building to the right of the parking garage, there is a plaque on the wall showing that's where the Mary Anderson theater stood. There are pictures of it on Google as well. Great work as always! So much fun, love to learn! Glad you're showing the Ville, my hometown ;-) Look forward to the Cadillac story where Elvis gave his grandfather a Cadillac, a TV, and if memory serves, Elvis also gave him a hundred bucks. Thank ya, thank ya very much! Much love from the Bluegrass State!!
5:06 He's doing more than wiggling his finger in that shot. The Police must have been asleep on the job. Can you imagine them arresting him on stage half way through a song...if anything would have caused a riot that would. What idiots the authorities are at times. Enjoyed the video. Thanks Spa Guy.
I used to live in Louisville and went to meetings for my work within blocks, or in some cases, right at a few of these places. I've walked right by the Seelbach's front door. I had no idea I was so close to these places that hosted Elvis! Pretty cool! Also, in general the more south and west you go in downtown the rougher it gets. You wouldn't want to go too much further south in those back alleys!
Billy, Thank You so very Much, You Never disappoint! What I Love about this video is that it paints a picture and gives me some insight of the "Young Music Scene" at that time and what was going on in November of 1956...What is special (to me) is that My parents got Married on 11/10/56....and My Dad liked Elvis...Thank You So Much....Content only available through You!
Thank you Billy, great info on the “No Wiggle Show”.... it’s good to see that some of the buildings where Elvis performed are still standing and you are locating them and putting these videos together for us all. Incredible job, Spa Guy !!...TCB Frankie’Elvis’👍😅
The Wrestling,, The Concerts,, all the Lrs FM 102 times", Those day's were Awesome", I'm so sure?' If only I could remember them all?" lol Very Interesting" TY! much
Great video! Sad to see the town like that, becoming way to common these days. Beautiful hotel! Awesome to see it still has its historic grandeur! Thanks Billy! Another part of the Elvis puzzle!
Nice video coverage along with dates of happening in the pieces of the Elvis puzzle. Taking off like a rocket in this time frame. Hard to imagine being in Elvis' shoes going from living in Lauderdale courts a few years earlier to staying in this grand hotel. Very sad them grand old buildings downtown are an eyesore with plywood fascia.. I think i may have seen you in Indy 500 yesterday on the Segway. Thanks again.
Great Building Structures. Hope Louisville will keep there town Buildings preserved and make it Into a Buisness. Thanks Billy for your time showing us Elvis History.
A little about the Louisville Gardens. It was home of the Kentucky Colonels, an ABA franchise. The USWA had wrestling there every Tuesday night, 7:30 bell time, as a kid I went to many a show, and Muhammad Ali fight here early in his career. It was a great venue, unfortunately the city of Louisville has let it fall to disrepair and it hasn't been used for years.
Great stuff Spa Guy, as usual very informative, ' the Police chief sounds like a twit'.. No wiggle 😂.. But as Always, you are brilliant for bringing this to us!
You can't have to much excitement when you're entertaining people. He just liked moving to the music. Telling him not to wiffle is like telling him not to breathe. What do they say about these singers now a days?
If ur ever come back through Louisville u need to stop by and visit Freedom Hall were Elvis sold out in 1971, 1974,76 and the last concert in 1977! I would love to be a tour guide ! I hope u found were Elvis /Grandfather live and laid to rest! The car Elvis bought his Grandfather in 56 was a man named O'Ryan! I saw all Elvis concerts 71 - 77! My sisters and I argument in 1971 when I was 14 yrs. old over the seats we had! We told him it took us months to save up for the 4 tickets! Big amount of $40.00 , that's $10.00 per ticket..lol! We told him between the large speakers and the backup singers J.D. standing well over 6'
I enjoyed this story on no wiggle. Not being a Elvis fan I wonder if the Chief changed his mind later. Sad seeing some many places closed up. The hotel looked very nice. Thank you.
Another fabulous video Billy! I found the "no wiggle" story so weird as they didn't mind pin up's of woman and such as that. Elvis wasn't selling sex appeal, although he sure had it. He wasn't trying to have it though. He just was moving as the music struck him. Those people would probably turn over in their graves if they could see the likes of Miley Cyrus and such today. They make Elvis look tame! Anyway, sad to see old buildings gone or closed up as usual. Change comes whether we want it to or not. Thanks again!
I was at this show. My uncle owned a chain of jewelry stores and presented Elvis with a gold watch. Because of that we sat in the front row with the press. I was 12 years old. Elvis was great and already very popular.
The realto is now the Palace( incredible theatre with a false night sky built into it. ), and they rebuilt the Gardens as Broadbent Arena, at the fairgrounds. Also still called the Gardens. Something like that...
The Palace Theatre on Fourth Street is the original Lowe's-United Artists, a grand movie palace opened in 1928 and refurbished in the 1980s. I have been there often since childhood, as I was with the beautiful Beaux-Arts style Rialto, a 1920s B.F. Keith circuit gem sadly demolished in the late 1960s. It sat almost directly across Fourth Street where a parking garage now stands. It was a magical place to visit. The Jefferson County Armory, renamed Louisville Gardens, is now used as the county's storage depository, and is in sad disrepair. The huge multi-purpose structure held concerts from Frank Sinatra in the '40s to a wonderful evening with Rosemary Clooney which I attended during the '90s. In November 1956 my wife, then thirteen, was at the early afternoon Elvis performance. She sat - or I should say mostly stood and screamed - just a few rows from Elvis' left side. She can be seen in the footage shot by the Louisville Police Department, later used in several commercial videos. Great memories - she remembers it well. Broadbent Arena is a livestock exhibition hall on the grounds of the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center, and has no connection to Louisville Gardens whatsoever.
You provide great videos to many people and I also, but I don’t have the time to look for your new videos when released. I haven’t received email notifications from RU-vid since 8/13/20. I also checked google support and found a statement stating as of 8/13/20 RU-vid will not send email notifications anymore. For me this is a sad day. Please don’t take this personal Billy I would like to thank you again for your outstanding work 🇺🇸
I really enjoyed this video, as well as your other videos. I live in Indianapolis so I have been to Louisville several times. I have stayed at the Seelbach twice and it is beautiful. Sounds like Elvis did not have any ties to the Palace but it is one of the most beautiful theaters I have ever seen. I have been to a few concerts there and the restoration was excellent. Downtown does look like a ghost town in the video but a lot of that has to do with Covid. Fourth Street Live is an entertainment district that stretches several blocks near the Palace and Seelbach with lots of restaurants, shops, and venues. I was there last summer and it was very busy. It was very clean and looked great. Like the downtown area in most big cities, including Memphis and Indianapolis, there are good areas and not so good areas.
Why isn't his grandfather buried at Graceland too? Great video again Billy. I'm actually doing a jigsaw of Elvis & it looks similar to the photo you have just shown with him on stage with his guitar lol xx
I enjoy your videos. If you have time, I would like to talk to you about something I think you would be interested in regarding Elvis. My email address is kellhawkins3@gmail.com.
Yeah Billy Louisville Gardens has been closed for several years now. After that concert is when Elvis bought his Grandfather Jesse Presley a new car. Since Jesse lived in Louisville working at the Pepsi plant on Crittenden Dr. Jesse Presley is also buried here in Louisville with his wife but I haven't figured out which cemetery yet. I'm born and raised in Louisville and I can tell you that downtown looks alot worse now than it did a few months ago because the mayor tied the polices hands and let rioters destroy alot of the downtown and it's still happening just not as bad. It a shame to see what has happened in the city.
@@SpaGuy Awesome, I'll be on the lookout for it. He may not have been, I know he worked there but not sure about the start and end dates! Thanks Billy!
Thank you Billy for an interesting excursion into the past. You are good at it.🤝 If possible, I would like to ask, probably not a very difficult question for you. Billy, tell me. Where was Elvis in his last minutes of life? I know what's in the bathroom. But, in what. At home on the second floor? Or elsewhere? For example, in the bathroom of a building built by Elvis in 1975 for racquetball? If you answer, I will be very grateful to you
I visited both Memphis and Louisville in the late Eighties and early Nineties and both were bustling; friendly & beautiful cities. I have heard lots statements similar to yours about now"being rough".
No one wants to be downtown anymore because you cant go anywhere without dealing with protesters blocking streets or throwing crap at cars. It's a joke now. Just 5 months ago Downtown Louisville was completely different looking place.
I live in southern Alabama, and I’ve always heard a local story about Elvis not being welcomed here once because of his wiggly moves. His performance was shut down in a school assembly at Vigor High. “In October of 1955, Elvis would return to the Bay area to perform during an assembly at the Vigor High School auditorium, but the show was short-lived. Principal J.M. Laird was aghast at Elvis’ unorthodox gyrations and closed the curtain on the concert after only 30 minutes.” Today his moves are considered innocent compared to what young people see from performers.
I read that Elvis' performance here in 1956 was filmed by the police so that his gyrations, if lewd, would be evidenced. I've been looking for the film of that performance.
Spa Guy this is the first time I have ever heard anyone mention a GrandFather. Wonder if Elvis stayed in contacted after the Divorce? Any another thing, what happed to Gladys’ Parents and if Elvis knew them and had a relationship with them all? Thank u for all u do. I always look forward to yr videos each day. I really appreciate all that u do and yr time.
Not sure if you have seen my previous comment on here. I am a very very close relative of Elvis and would like to talk to you. If you don't respond, I understand. Thanks Billy
Billy, so glad you came to my beloved hometown of Louisville; but, sorry it looks so bad due to a "frustrated" and woeful mayor. I'm a local historian (former library archivist for The Courier-Journal). Please read my reply to Jeff Boyd regarding histories of the Rialto and Palace Theatres. Also the Seelbach Hotel, opened in 1907, had nowhere near its present grandeur in 1956. At that time it was the Sheraton Seelbach, and sported mid-century veneer everywhere. Still a very nice place to stay, but Elvis saw none of what you filmed recently. Articles of that period say he and his entourage booked an entire upper floor. Actor and entrepreneur Roger Davis, now passed, invested millions in a complete, elegant restoration of the hotel in the early 1980s. Good for him and our downtown image! Incidentally, on August 25, 1961, my wife-to-be and I celebrated her 18th birthday at the Seelbach restaurant, exactly 59 years ago today...and we're still kickin'! You were standing in the mezzanine level former Gentleman's Parlour (with half-palladium windows) where it is said F. Scott Fitzgerald had his inspiration to write of the "Muhlbach" Hotel mentioned in Daisy and Gatsby fiction. Lots more to tell you but can wait. I want to send you a complimentary copy of my 1995 video FOURTH STREET... LOUISVILLE'S STREET OF YESTERDAYS. It mentions all movie houses along the city's Theatre Row, including a little-known Elvis Presley at the Rialto's 1955 Philip Morris Jamboree. I always enjoy your very thorough investigations. Best to you.
America was not as free back then as we’ve thought. To be able to simply put a law on the books locally “A No Wiggle Ban” , left up to Who’s interpretation? Who decides if a certain movement in indecent ? Can you imagine if Elvis wore his pants around his knees with his boxers exposed? I think that many many Men were jealous of Elvis in every way. They hated to see in their own Girlfriend’s and Wive’s eyes their reactions to the man. Elvis was truly one of the early one’s that even men had to admit what a beautiful human being he was.
