Former wife of the 'King of Rock 'n' Roll' Elvis Presley, Priscilla Presley joins Piers Morgan Uncensored to discuss the new film all about Elvis' life by Baz Luhrmann and how accurate the film really was and how well Austin Butler played him.
Piers firstly asks about the movie and what Priscilla thought about Butler's depiction of her late ex-husband. The actor had studied Elvis for two years to perfect his character and mannerisms. Priscilla also gives her verdict on Olivia de Jong, who played her in the movie.
Piers finally asks Priscilla if she thinks Elvis would survive in today's world of cancel culture with all the controversy that's surrounded his life, which leads to her addressing reports he was racist.

One convincing argument supporting Elvis Presley's lack of racism is the degree to which all of his HIS music was so very influenced by the Negro Spirituals and other Black music of the time, in which Presley grew up. It WAS! And, such is life and such also cannot be refuted, can it?

@@crazy4corbinbleux Michael Jackson was a beastly animal that stole from other black people, as well as the innocence of his many male tot victims. He definitely stole the moonwalk from old time AA dancer, Bill Baily that can be seen doing the same dance steps on black and white film clips, from way back in 1952. Jackson's own employees say that the dirty dancer refused to issue their paychecks for months at a time, and expected the maids to work for free. Prince was much more talented than the grossly over rated boi predator, Michael Jackson. The famous purple one caused Jackson many sleepless nights when he stole his thunder from "Thrilla", back in 1984 with his Oscar winning biopic and soundtrack album, "Purple Rain." Of course Elvis was not racist. The film does a great job at addressing cultural appropriation and giving credit where credit's due whilst also showing that Elvis did what he could during the societal struggles of the time and I believe Priscilla recognizes that. I wish Piers would at least address that instead of continuously indulging in his own echo chamber and, with that, staying incredibly small-minded. If anything, Piers is really good at simplifying a really complicated and layered issue, essentially doing the same as what he accuses 'woke cancel culture' of. So what is he really contributing besides preaching to the choir and feeding his ego?

That music was truly a part of him, as the movie shows. Was it wrong that a white person got the opportunities that a black person didn't? Yes, obviously. Was it wrong that he got to make all that money from it while a black person couldn't? Yes. You could also view him as introducing black music to the masses and breaking barriers. Essentially that's what he did and he suffered the consequences: they way he was moving - inspired by black culture - ended him up having to do service overseas for two years. But after that he continued anyway because he was simply being himself, and with that making a statement. Things aren't always so black and white, pun intended.

NOBODY today that is about love and peace and mankind are looking to find scenarios they can twist into their own racist dialog. They are looking to keep people divided, under the guise of building your own race up or your own political party up. There are some in all races and political parties doing this, and its a real shame. There are far better ways to bring people together --- ALL PEOPLE together. One race, the human race. Loads of white artists have black female backing singers, because they sound great and usually can sing the pants off of the star lead singer. The reason they are backing singers is because historically the music industry didn't want to promote them as solo artists and white audiences preferred listening to, and watching, white people singing and playing rather than black folks, so it was, and in many cases still is, their only way of making a little money. I wonder if you've seen the countless LP covers from the 50's and 60's of artists like Otis Redding etc with a photo of a blonde girl on the front. When being from the South labels you as racist. In parts of Canada for instance, people are not used to seeing black people. Racism might be an issue there (I'm from Canada and have seen it). Segregation does exist in some US Southern states (and elsewhere in the US and Europe) but not all people in South are racist. Black Americans are part of the fabric of the United States and were there long before others came on board. Elvis grew up with them, sang with them and lived with them. I'm sure he could not envision the US without its Black population. When I compare Canada to the States I always feel that the US has its very own unique soul and both white and blacks are part of it and let's not forget Elvis did remind others that Black Americans were the source of his music. I just cannot envision the Unites States without its Black citizens. It would not be the same country. When Elvis says " Oh Dixieland, where I was born......." he is refering to the land that belongs to all Americans there, both white and black.

If you watch the news racism is alive and well in the South. But that’s not true. Southern culture makes up a ton of different people. One thing I can say factually we have a problem with is gossiping about others. Some Southerners will be hospitable & kind and then go talk about others and in a way our culture encourages this bc we are very vocal and love to talk. ELVIS IS STILL #1 TODAY: Elvis gave an astronomical 1,684 Concerts and over 6,000 Live Performances during his 24 year career, an astonishing and amazing achievement not surpassed by anyone else in the music business! And over 1.6 Billion Records sold Worldwide (international sales went largely unreported so no one truly knows how many more records he actually sold around the world - probably 2x that amount reported). The Highest Selling MUSICIAN in the History of Recorded Music. AND the Only Entertainer in the World that is a member of these 4 major Music Halls of Fame - Rock 'n Roll HOF, R&B HOF, Country HOF and Gospel HOF! His contributions to the blues and gospel and rockabilly often is misunderstood or undervalued. The most amazing stat to me that Elvis absolutely crushes is 114 Top 40 Hits on the Billboard charts. Noone comes ANYWHERE CLOSE. 114 were in the Top 40, 40 were in the top 10, and 18 went to number one BEFORE HE DIED. Today he's up to 34 Number 1 Hits. "Elvis: 30 #1 Hits" debuted in 2003. Its most recent certification, a 6× Platinum award, for US sales in excess of six million copies, was announced by the RIAA on March 8, 2018. England accounted for over 3 Million. The album helped Elvis to have the longest span of number one albums on the Billboard 200. The album remained on the chart for one hundred and twelve weeks. "Elvis created a new style all his own, and gave an injection to black music like no other artist had ever done." --- Legendary black entertainer Rufus Thomas.

The black community did NOT like Elvis, and even after his death until recent years have struggled to appreciate his work when artists like Otis Blackwell and Chuck Berry are getting overshadowed by his music. Where are the real pioneers of his music? No one will ever know their names or see them on the covers. As someone from the black community and as someone who attended schools with history books that were manipulated to not share our STORY- I know the entertainment industry is no different, if not worse. I am not gonna let Piers Morgan or any youtubers (race unknown) convince me that my own community loves elvis when I know the complications and controversy that existed with him in our community. The most annoying part of this film was their obsessive urgency to keep convincing the audience that Elvis always credited black people and went into the black streets and brought blacks and whites together. They knew this is one of his biggest controversies and in an effort to save his legacy and cover his back, they overdid this part of the film. This was complete hyperbole and kept getting rubbed in our faces the entire 3 hours. I also found it completely disgraceful and horrendous the release date for this film falls on the day before Michael Jackson's 13th death anniversary. Coincidence? I don't think so. The moment Michael started breaking the ALL-TIME record sale of biggest selling album of all time- including elvis, The Beatles, etc. OVERNIGHT they called him a freak, a homosexual, a child molester, and everything they could do to turn the public against him. If you saw the Elvis film yourself, you would have seen what they did to him as well the moment he got overnight success and started to say he was being too provocative and couldn't dance the way he could on stage. Michael had it even WORSE- as a black man.

@@crazy4corbinbleux Very good use of copy and paste from your previous comment! The Black community did love Elvis back in the day. It is only our new "woke" environment that has tainted everything and turns everyone against everyone. MJ said the media only called him out after he broke sales records. His comments were in 2001, and they were blatantly false. The allegations were well before that. He was simply deflecting. As for his comments about Elvis, he was angry that Lisa Marie divorced him. He never made those comments prior to that. This is not a new story. Jaded people always make such comments. They want to hurt those they feel hurt them. The allegations about him and young boys began in 1986. The Police started to investigate him in 1993. None of that lines up with the timeline of his argument. He was simply playing the race card instead of making a reasoned argument. He also mentioned that no Black people were on book covers. What an absolute lie! Oprah was the biggest thing in media at the time (maybe still is). Shaggy was the biggest selling artist. Eddie Murphy and Denzel Washington were two of the highest paid actors in 2001. MJ was in a lot of legal trouble. Just as most people in trouble, they blame everyone else but themselves. Elvis never called himself the "King" and would tell people that Fats Domino was the King of Rock or that Jesus is the King, not him. Elvis and Jackie Wilson were friends. Jackie Wilson had nothing but good things to say about Elvis. Elvis helped Jackie Wilson when people were not going to his shows. When Jackie Wilson suffered a stroke and went into a coma, Elvis paid all of his medical bills for years until he died. He did that secretly, not to grandstand, but to help his friend. No doubt the great Jackie Wilson's family would 100% disagree with everything you have expressed.

HERE ARE THE FACTS: The great legends of color in his era: BB King - Jackie Wilson - James Brown were there to witness Elvis‘ creativity. He was a one-of-a-kind super talent that grew up in the black community during the Great Depression and segregation in the deep South. Born in 1935 in a shack his father built (no electricity or plumbing). His twin brother died at birth. The Presleys were so poor that they buried his stillborn twin brother in a shoe box. So Elvis experienced the depths of poverty from the day he was literally born. He grew up playing with black friends on the streets and in black and white southern Baptist churches, in the poorest mixed and black neighborhoods in Tupelo. His support for the civil rights movement is not known by the greater population in America. The new Elvis 2022 movie is going to examine this part. This is why almost all black musicians from that era absolutely loved Elvis because he was able to take that Memphis sound all around the country and then the world. Little Richard credited Elvis Presley multiple times for opening up the door for black music and creating a path that he could travel and so he could make his mark. Clearly a terribly racist time Elvis put poverty and racial socialization on his platform. But he did it all through Music and his behind-the-scenes actions alone. He never got political I think that’s what actually made him so powerful and able to succeed. JOHN LEE HOOKER - "Elvis was a really good friend of mine.... He was the king." -- John Lee Hooker MUHAMMAD ALI - 'Elvis was my close personal friend. He had a robe made for me. I don't admire nobody, but Elvis Presley was the sweetest, most humble and nicest man you'd want to know. We must understand, Elvis did lot for poor people, he cared for people, he had a good heart, he just wasn't a person who was great with talent, but he was great in spirit and with God in his heart. I wouldn't praise nobody if he don't deserve it, because I am the greatest of all time in boxing, in boxing. I said boxing ! But I'm telling you, I'm Black, I'm a Islamic, I'm 100% different from you. But I’ll tell the world Elvis was the greatest of all time. I'm a Muslim who's black who stands up for what he believes. I don't have to say what I don't feel, I'm not false, I don't have to say this. I have no Bosses. I'm free. He to me, is one of the greatest singers, actors and all round men of all time.” ~ "THE GREATEST" MUHAMMAD ALI. BB KING: 'Let me tell you the definitive truth about Elvis Presley and racism', The King of the Blues, B.B. King said in 2010. 'With Elvis, there was not a single drop of racism in that man. And when I say that, believe me I should know'. -- BB KING The "GODFATHER OF SOUL" JAMES BROWN: “I wasn’t just a fan, I was his brother. He said I was good and I said he was good; we never argued about that. Elvis was a hard worker, and dedicated, and God loved him … I love him and hope to see him in heaven. There will never be another like that Soul Brother”. During Elvis' private family wake, James was the LAST ONE TO LEAVE. 3 hours and 30 minutes later -- it took several of his security guards to help him out of the room. James was devastated -- James and Elvis sang Gospel together many a night to all hours of the morning at each others' homes. James Brown was considered family by the Presleys they were so close. JACKIE WILSON: "A lot of people have accused Elvis of stealing the black man's music, when in fact, almost every black solo entertainer copied from Elvis." --- JACKIE WILSON (Elvis quietly paid for Jackie's medical expenses until the day he passed away in 1977. Before Jackie's stage accident he would carry a small signed photo of Elvis in his pants pocket. Every day, bar none.) RANDY JACKSON (of the Jackson 5): "Elvis used Rock and Roll music to bridge the gap between whites and minorities. He was a wonderful person." LITTLE RICHARD "He sung my Tootie Fruti & by him singing it, made it bigger & made ME bigger" And then he said: “I thank God for Elvis Presley. I thank the Lord for sending Elvis to open the door so I could walk down the road...”- Little Richard CISSY HOUSTON: "Elvis loved gospel music. He was raised on it. And he really did know what he was talking about. He was singing Gospel all the time - almost anything he did had that flavor. You can't get away from what your roots are." - Cissy Houston (The Sweet Inspirations co-founder & member & sang vocals for Elvis, also mother of Whitney Houston)

No. That idea is as full of holes & music inaccuracy as a white supremacist evaluation on Presley & 1950's Rock n Roll music. 1)Presley is being held accountable for the lives of the Blues artists that came BEFORE Him. Rock n Roll came from a bigger music gene pool than just Blues/R&B. 2)When Presley crossed over to the POP (white) charts/Hit Parade, in 1956(with 'Heartbreak Hotel'), Black Rock n Roll artists were already topping the POP charts. Little Richard, along with many Black Rock n Roll artists was appearing in the most successful RnR Movie of the 1950's ,The Girl Can't Help It'. He sang the title tune to the Movie & was billed Equally to the white music artists in the Movie. 3)Those Black Rock n Roll artists, Chuck Berry, Little Richard,Bo Diddley, The Platters, Frankie Lymon,Fats Domino(& more) indeed did "make it big" & got rich. It was the Blues & Country artists got left behind by Rock n Roll. BLACK Rock n Roll artists also left behind BLACK Blues artists. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-W4XVKl4j1VA.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DnBAWvnq8l8.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3750jlrtIKg.html 'ROCK ,ROCK ,ROCK' (1956) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n3GJooJUj2Q.html FULL MOVIE: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t1GmNhxnEck.html 4) Black journalist STEREO WILLIAMS: "That Elvis had a much bigger hit with 'Hound Dog' compared to its original singer, Big Mama Thornton, is also often cited as evidence of his benefitting solely from being a white face. But in the 1950s, hit songs would be recorded by several artists; and while there were many blatant examples of 'white washing' black hits for white audiences (see: Pat Boone), it wasn't automatic that the White artist would have the bigger hit or the definitive version. 'Blueberry Hill' is considered by many to be Fats Domino's signature song, but it had been written by Vincent Rose and recorded by several artists prior to his much more well-known 1956 version. There is more nuance in the discussion of who-recorded-what-first-and-why than many like to consider. www.elvis.com.au/presley/why-i-stopped-hating-elvis-presley.shtml "I'd always been led to believe rock 'n' roll was a sea of Black faces until this one gyrating white guy came along...ELVIS FIRST SINGLE…WAS A YEAR BEFORE Chuck Berry's first, BEFORE Bo Diddley, BEFORE Little Richard's 1st('Tutti Frutti')" www.elvis.com.au/presley/why-i-stopped-hating-elvis-presley.shtml 5) "I was raised being told negative untruthful things about Elvis; like so many other Black children in this country" www.justicepaynepublishing.com/ 1950's Rock n Roll did NOT END segregation, but it was a small ,shining light, against segregation that happened almost a decade PRE- the1964 Equal Rights act, PRE-MLK speeches, Civil rights marches. Presley & Rock n Roll were both a force for good. Presley, ALAN FREED, DICK CLARK, all those Rock n Roll artists were music component's, not politicians, that helped Black artists get thru to the mainstream(for citations on that check BB KING, Little Richard, Rufus Thomas, Bobby Bland biographies & interviews). I love Elvis. People of certain race hate him because they believe he stole songs from their people even though he didn't. Elvis is the KING.

@@crazy4corbinbleux your race is not a "community" - it is a population of people who share the same skin tone. Black people hold widely varying opinions on a great number of topics, just as people of other races do. To suggest otherwise, and to reduce their viewpoints to mere echoes of your own, is racist by definition.

No entertainer to date has done more than Elvis. You could go to a concert and he would give a $15k ring to an audience member randomly. In the 1950s he bought a house near Graceland for a guy in a wheelchair and had the house remodeled so that way the guy could move around in his wheelchair. No one ever talks about his generosity and kindness. He was more generous than any damn politician or clergyman.

Elvis Presley grew up in a majority Black community and was very religious with him attending Gospels at his local church for example, Elvis's 1968 comeback with his "If I can dream" was and still is his in my opinion his proudest moment as a tribute to a terrible year, (1968) for the USA in which Martin Luther King was assassinated in Memphis, (home of Elvis Presley). Finally his backup singers of the late 60s and early 70s the Inspirations were Black singers who have over the years spoken positively about their time with Elvis Presley especially Sissy Whitney, Whitney Houston's mother.
