This RU-vid channel review'd the tape, too: / deadendhiphop
On Elmatic, Detroit's Elzhi rewrite's Nas' seminal Illmatic to fit his personal story. Thanks to his flow, lyricism, and some production help from the Will Sessions band, the project goes off without a hitch.
I'm sure it'll be debated whether or not this album is better than the original. And, of course, Illmatic will reign supreme. I'm not here to put my two cents in on that one, though.
What I will say is from the perspective of a tribute, revitalization, or revamp, this thing is freaking fantastic. Hell, it's more enjoyable than a lot of original albums I come across. It's just a nice reminder of hip hop's best characteristics, and what a trip it's been since the '94 release of the original.
What do you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? What should I review next?

Greatest tribute album to another artist.. ever. It's a 5 out of 5 star album. He gives us Nas sound and style, but he gives us himself why it works. You hear Nas, but he separates the 2. Awesome

I feel he only gave it an 8 cause it's a tribute project. But it's definitely a perfect project for what it is. Elzhi got huge expectations for his next album he's gonna have to out do Elmatic.

you know the way he did it and how he pulled it off incredibly well and added his own take to the original i think he does deserve a 10. but on the topic of whether its better than ilmmatic....i think the original will always have a special place in the hearts of those of loved it to begin with and therefore rank it over elmatic. but i still appreciate elzhis approach and look forward to his next release :D

Thanks for bringing up how he kept the rhyme schemes and flows. It's like rapper sampling, and people don't realize how difficult that really is without sounding like a copycat (Purposely limiting yourself to someone elses rhythms). Salute to Elzhi for his craftsmanship.

2 and a half years later and it's still amazing. I'd say it's basically on par with Illmatic. Elzhi brings it just as hard as Nas did in '94, and the fact that it's a live band that performed all the beats changes the dynamic just enough to give it a unique personality. If it were done any other way, it probably wouldn't be anywhere near what it is today.

They are hard records to compare for me. On a technical level its hard for me to argue that elzhi's record isn't better, he released it in 2011. Nas was laying that groundwork nearly two decades earlier.

With all due respect to Nas, my favorite ever, El was a better album than Ill. If we're comparing legacy, then it's not a competition. But the only thing is thats not the case. If i look back on Illmatic and compare it to Elmatic, there's only a few songs that id prefer, and that's Nas' Represent, One Love, and Memory Lane. Other than that, as crazy as it sounds, El ELevated on every song, ESPECIALLY The World Is Yours.

YES! Totally nailed this review. I had exactly the same sentiments as you before I heard it, not really being sure if I wanted to listen (even though I really like Elzhi) because i thought it would be impossible to do justice to the original. And then after I listened and heard he made it his own I was totally blown away and I agree with everything you said. I'd give it a 9. 10 if not for the last song. Great stuff. Idk if you do leaks, but if you do, Bon Iver, Bon Iver next! I loved that too.

My friend, you hit the nail smack on the head. Nas is my favorite rapper, so automatically, I went into Elmatic with contempt. But upon FIRST listen, I was so impressed I played it for the rest of the day. Anthony, I truly trust your judgement and I endorse you as one of music's most objective and accurate critics.

I was skeptical initially. Elzhi who I love and ilmatic is in my top 5 albums, I thought he could do himself damage by taking this masterpiece on. My god I was wrong. Everything from production to lyricism and delivery was 10/10. I argue with myself often what I prefer it's that good. Will sessions did it absolute justice and brought their own flavour to it with the live instrumentals. Elzhi's best work imo and unforgettable lines. This needed some budget to do a visual piece to supplement but wow. One of the albums I wouldn't mind leaving on repeat. Well done to everyone involved. Take it from preemo's reaction himself. If he credits you then it means something.

I picked this one last week, and Its a nice little ode to illmatic. Elzhi's rhymes left something to be desired at times, especially when I think of NaS' on each classic beat. However i really enjoyed hearing the Beats on Illmatic revisited and prettied up a little be. overall I enjoyed it. A nice like homage

@Trolls4Ever While he may be able to pick up Nas' rhyme schemes and cadences and reproduce them, Elzhi's style is not like Nas' at all. He is a Detroit rapper and like Detroit rappers, he is VERY cadence heavy.. Listen to his solo projects, slum village projects, and mixtapes. Elzhi is an original trust!

This album is a touchy subject for those of us who have experienced the original "Illmatic" first. I liken it to comparing Michael Jordan to Lebron James, and I'm sure it feels the same for the older generations that compare Michael Jordan to Kareem or even Magic. It feels blasphemous, but in a way, you can't let nostalgia bias your opinions. With that being said, I think this mixtape is comparable to Illmatic, and lyrically, maybe even better. His metaphors are so intricate. I say AT LEAST a 9.

great review, but an 8? You were right in calling it ballsy, but he did the job. I think the conversation of which is better is absurd. You can't take the floor plan blueprints of the Taj Majal, add new drapes and context, and then compare it. The entire framework was created by Nas. Elzhi created a great record, but Nas' record is a cornerstone of hip hop. You can't compare these albums. Illmatic has a historical significance and context that can't be measured or compared.
