EM 2024: Chaos at Deutsche Bahn! "It's not running smoothly!" Railroad spokeswoman on train disorder
Following harsh criticism from soccer fans, Deutsche Bahn has acknowledged deficits in long-distance transport during the European Championships. "We understand the fans' displeasure and criticism," said Deutsche Bahn board member and head of long-distance transport Michael Peterson to the German newspaper "Bild" (Thursday). He admitted that the railroad was currently not offering the quality that everyone deserved.
Most recently, reports from foreign media about train breakdowns and overcrowded platforms had caused a stir. The large number of delays on long-distance services also caused great annoyance among many travelers.
Peterson assured: "At the same time, we are currently doing everything we can to get travelers to their destinations reliably." Since the start of the European Championships, more than five million long-distance travelers have been on the rails. "We are delighted about that. And if things don't go as planned, we say to the fans: thank you for your patience and care."
Before the tournament, Deutsche Bahn had announced that it would offer 10,000 additional seats per day on long-distance services. Upcoming construction work had also been brought forward in order to prevent delays and disruptions on important routes during the tournament. Deutsche Bahn is also offering special Euro 24 tickets, which cost just 29.90 euros to travel to the venue.
The train delay of a prominent passenger also caused a stir. Tournament boss Philipp Lahm arrived significantly late for the match between Ukraine and Slovakia in Düsseldorf due to train problems. "We are in contact with Deutsche Bahn and they will continue to do everything they can to ensure that people really do get from A to B on time. But this is not a problem that is occurring now, during the tournament. We should have worked on it long beforehand," said Lahm a few days later. Germany had neglected to work on its infrastructure in recent years.
