I got this same idea from an outdoor life or field & stream magazine somewhere around 1982 or so. I have been using my can heater ever since while hunting in the winter. If you use a coffee can you can also use the top to seal it and the alcohol will last for quite a long time. I have actually lit the thing the following year after filling it and no alcohol was needed. Thanks for passing this on. I have thought of doing it but just never got around to it. Good on ya...

Now take that and put it in a paint can. Small can inside the paint can. Put stones between the two for insulation. This way the paint can won't get hot
Just remember to blow it out once the alcohol has burned up because the paper will begin to burn and make a smelly, smokey, sooty mess. How about some steel wool instead of the toilet paper? Would that work? Do you even need a wick?
We would put a little alcohol in an ashtray and a small cotton ball and fire it up to warm the tiny store I was helping to warm up early in the cold mornings in Istanbul in the late seventies.

Those are cool. I seen one video where a guy had these toilet paper hearters stashed in his car for emergencies, for five years. He took it out and it still worked after all that time.He is probably going to it stashed in his coffin when he dies for cold days.lol

Just so everybody knows, never never NEVER add additional alcohol while it is lit. Never!!! It may seem like an easy enough thing to do but it can seriously harm or kill you. The flame will instantly travel up into the bottle and explode burning alcohol all over you and if you don't die you will wish you had every time a child sees you and screams in horror or when a pretty girl looks the other way in an attempt to hide her revulsion.
You are terribly wrong as we speak. I have a bowl lit up of alcohol 91%. I have just added and continue to add multiple portions of alcohol to continue the burn. This is a serious comment.
I use the same premise with my cat food can stove. But instead of toilet paper, I use insulation. The top, after the alcohol burns off, is hard as a rock. But later on you can still add alcohol a d use it again. I’ve used it many times and the same insulation is still in it. Works like a charm. Thanks for this video. Gives me ideas. Oh! I just thought of something. If you have a Kelly Kettle, you can put your TP heater inside the kettle, cook your food And heat your tent at the same time. Just a thought.
I HAD A CAN IN STORAGE FOR SOME YEARS IN MY GARAGE, READY TO GO, AS DESCRIBED IN THE VIDEO. I DECIDED TO ADD THE CLAY POT THAT SO MANY HAVE USED WITH TEA CANDLES. I GOT A LARGE POT ABOUT 12" INCHES ACROSS AND TWO SMALLER ONES LIKE THEY SHOWN BOLTED TOGETHER. I GOT A LARGE WIRE FLOWER STAND THAT WILL HOLD THE 12" POT UP SIDE DOWN, AND PUT THE BURNER AS DESCRIBED UNDER IT. I RAISED THE CAN UP ON A STAND TILL IT IS ONLY ABOUT THREE INCHES FROM THE CLAY POT. IT IS SO HOT YOU CAN'T TOUCH IT. MY OFFICE IS ABOUT 12 X 12, AND IT IS ABOUT 3 DEGREES WARMER THAN THE LIVING ROOM.
@@harveybrow9592 What cardboard? The alcohol-soaked toilet paper worked and the clay pot got really hot. The problem is that alcohol burns up quite fast. Candles don't really get it hot enough to do any real good. You need a fuel that doesn't smell; or burn up all the breathing oxygen, yet gets the clay pot hot enough to warm up at least a fair size room. I haven't discovered the answer to that. I worked with it quite a lot last year. I would still use it in an emergency
@@charlottemace1810 the issue isn't smell or "burning up breathing oxygen" as the latter is totally implausible. The issue (as with any sort of combustion heater) is the CO produced by the burn. So you have to have sufficient ventilation to let fresh air in and CO out in order to prevent potentially fatal CO poisoning.
Put a sheet of metal on top and snuff it. You can buy the lids for these cans. That would work perfectly. That way you can add the alcohol when you make the heater too.
