In a hurricane, communications can become as vital as food and water when aid becomes hard to come by. Like my other emergency videos, I recommend a tiered approach. Lots of receive capability with the power to call for help if needed.

We use FRS & GMRS radios in the area of the Florida keys where I live. I also run a CB base station. We have a Ham network here, but I haven’t got around to getting my ticket. They do what we need em to do.

Good info on that hurricane net. I have the general but no radio that can do 20 meters. Now I wish I had that. I have one that does 10 meters. I’m in N.C. so I’ll definitely look into something that does 20 for the next time. We get hurricanes pretty frequently here

One other thing. Have a battery bank or a generator to keep your radios and phone charged during one of these emergencies. You go one step further and add a solar panel that can help keep your gear charged after the storm passes.

Yep! But this video isn't for those details. It'd be WAY to long :D

I have that yellow crank radio in my CA earthquake kit, and like the lights under solar for table top use in dark.

Well done Josh, a great rundown on comm options. They also have a net running on 7.268 and DMR 3199. N1CLC, SoCal SOTA

Indeed! The 7.268 net is actually a better performer even during the day I found so far. Nice Call, I'll look you up, respect to the SOTA.

I've had maybe 7 to 10 sets of blister pack FRS Radios over the years. In East Texas, surrounded by dense foliage, a quarter mile was a stretch. When we moved to Arizona, I expected better performance - less obstruction. I bought a really nice expensive set of Uniden radios, these are the ones that advertise a ridiculous 60 mile range. Had my daughter stand on the second floor walk out deck on our house and I started walking away from her. Right at a quarter of a mile the radios started to suck again. Even on the "higher power" channels nothing past a quarter mile was reliable. That frustration drove me into Ham Radio. Blister pack radios are great for kids playing in the same yard or in neighboring homes and they are handy when you are laid up in bed post knee surgery and you need ice chips. Beyond that? No. I'd even call them dangerous because of how they are marketed. Consumers who aren't in the know will buy them and not realize what a weak link they are. Would you buy a life preserver that only works in 3 feet of water?

most motorolas from T series get half mile (denese forest) to 5 miles point to point.i've tested t61 and got a bit under 3 mile positive response from other transreceiver. i do agree that HAM is way to go if one is willing to get through tests and become certified HAM operator. even cheap baofeng on low power has decisive advantage over 446/gmrs.

Get at least a Technician class ham license & be able to communicate over much longer ranges.

I've been messing with the TYT MD-390 GPS digital radios. Super super nice for both analog and digital communication and for "real" private communications (digitally encrypted, not like privacy tones on FRS radios where everyone else can hear you fine 2:35 ). They work great on FRS channels but not very legal to use them on them, for sure not digital and especially not encrypted! lol. Awesome range (even without a repeater), fully waterproof, text messages, GPS, etc. Just amazing radios.

Tnx OM...Next time you do an update to this video(for next disaster), I suggest the following: Harbor Freight(or similar) auto solar panel...reason: less than $30, includes cigarette lighter plug, could be used with USB car adapter to charge cell phones...Like your video, not too technical and to the point...73! - . . . - . - - - . . . - - . - - - - - . -

Hey, where is the video on what I should do to set things up for my wife. What is a good setup for her, settings, power options, etc. I just bought a BF radio, plan to get the app and or book to learn, depending on the app. Just wondering what to plan for her, power options for her, and how to make it super easy for her. I have watched about a dozen of your videos. After Hurricane Michael this year and Erma last year near Tampa we wanted a good setup

I would like to think that in an emergency life and death situation the FCC would let transmissions from non ham licence holders slide ( i am a licensed ham and do not advocate piracy but in an emergency screw the licence)
@HamRadioCrashCourse

Very little chance someone who hasn't operated before an emergency will be able to use amateur radio for help in an emergency.

They do. They have a clause that states, in essence, in an emergency, when life and property are in danger, anyone can use any frequency to make an emergency call.

SkinnyFlea 262 my baofeng can be programmed to transmit on frs. I wonder if using a better tuned antenna wouldn’t help.

Other than NOAA what frequency should I save for emergency coms ?
@HamRadioCrashCourse
@HamRadioCrashCourse 5 лет назад
2m/70cm calling frequencies, whatever emergency nets are in your area like the Hurricane net etc.
@kd5you1

If you can determine which ARES or RACES group is in your area you can look at their web sites for specific frequency information. Other than 14.325 the frequencies are different for different parts of the country. Also the NWS frequencies 162.400, 162.475, 162.425, 162.450, 162.500, 162.550, 162.525 are used for local weather 24/7.

Sweet i just look for the day (probably will never happen) one license for amateur radio or it will change to just be only sign ur name and ur good to go to cover tech and general tech. Its easier to get a concealed fireatm permit then a tech license or a general license
@HamRadioCrashCourse
@HamRadioCrashCourse 5 лет назад
The license is a service and a hobby so there are some levels of technical knowledge that is needed.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse yep so true i just wished they would make it easier to obtain a tech and general license to get more people into the hobbie since alot of people not all but some elmer's push away new people trying to get amateur radio
