EMERGENCY SHOW: LeBron James Agrees to New Contract With Lakers (2 Years With Player Option)

Rob Pelinka's window to shop is apparently closing. As expected, the Lakers and LeBron James have come to an agreement for his next deal, and since the Lakers couldn't make a big move, LeBron will be signing for the max, or really, really close to it. Reportedly, the deal is for two years, with a player option in year two (you've seen this structure before). The wrinkle: LeBron reportedly is willing to take a million or two less for this year, because it'll keep the Lakers below the second apron, which not only costs them a lot of money in taxes, etc. but also has a significant impact on avenues the Lakers could take to improve over the course of the season.
Second apron teams operate with hands, feet, and everything else tied behind their backs.
So we'll see what's next, but the Lakers now do seem set up for a very quiet offseason. There are still potential trades out there, moves at the margins and so on, but until they can clear some roster space, the Lakers are in a bind.
Meanwhile, the Lakers have signed a couple veteran coaches to JJ Redick's staff. Nate McMillan and Scott Brooks have agreed to come to LA, giving Redick a couple highly experienced voices to lean on. Good start.

Looking further into it I think once Klay Thompson turned them down the Lakers immediately moved into their backup plan. They're trying to compete for championships and they didn't feel any of the deals were enough to get them over the hump and didn't see Valanciunas salary would get them over the hump either. Starting (25-26) w/ the new TV deals the Salary Cap is expected to take a big jump (10%). Lebron showed a willingness to take a pay-cut but I believe they told him to make his money this season and look to be willing to take an even bigger cut next season with the increased salary cap for another potential Max player. Look for the Lakers to NOT take on more long term salary this season which means NO Jerami Grant or Cam Johnson. I say watch them look for names like Bruce Brown Jr, Dennis Schroder, Brook Lopez and possibly Dorian-Finney Smith w/ D'Lo and other long-term salaries going out (Vincent/Rui/Vanderbilt)

Pelinka was a fool to give Cam, Jaxson, & Christian player options as its hurting the Lakers now. LeBron as usual made a smart move contract-wise. The assistant coaching hires are solid. Pelinka still needs to make a few roster upgrades.

Bron eyeing for a championship before retiring is hurting Lakers roster development.
@t-rav3493
@t-rav3493 5 дней назад
Lakers don’t have roster development, they’ve been turning the roster over year after year since before Kobe retired and we weren’t doing crap before Bron showed up…Luke Walton coaching a bunch of kids. None of them blew up until AFTER they left the Lakers. The best young players we’ve gotten have all been older/ready to play guys and not young guys with lots of potential. We haven’t been a franchise that develops our players which is what they are trying to change…and failing

@edwardt7809
@edwardt7809 5 дней назад
I’d love it if Lebron could take MORE than the max. It’s not like he isn’t worth it, in terms of moving the needle and marketing, for the entire 2 decades he’s been in the league. People saying he should take less aren’t as capitalist as they think. The front office needs to work the contracts, not the players.
@ericmcgilp9704
@ericmcgilp9704 5 дней назад
@@edwardt7809 That's a reasonable opinion. My opinion is that a "superstar" that is only capable of giving you ~25 minutes of maximum energy per game isn't going to take a team anywhere. And that is when he's not missing games to load manage. Not hate... just a fact of being 40 years old.

The players available for trade aren’t exactly anything to be thrilled about so I can see the hesitation. I wouldn’t trade 2 picks for Grant. Cam Johnson and DFS require 2 picks. Those guys are inconsistent like Rui and wouldn’t move the needle. Especially if Max Christie and Dalton play well. Also if we trade DLO for a wing, we got no PG. This is the best it’s going to be until Bron retires.

LeBron gave them a list of people he’d take a pay cut for. They should have called Jonas Valančiūnas first, and they’d have him. He’s big enough and rebounds - two things we need. Instead they waited on the superstar, whose former team didn’t want DLo again. We blew it. He’s not to blame. Rob is.

I've been taking a wait and see approach w/ Pelinka because he hasn't been all bad and has had a few quality moves in addition to a few poor decisions including the historically bad move for Westbrook. With that said, I simply can't defend him here. Waiting and not being able to take advantage of Lebron's potential pay-cut especially when a player on his wishlist like Jonas Valanciunas signed for less than the MLE is a colossal failure. Instead we're left with Lebron on a max deal and have to send out more rotation players to get depth that we could have already.

@sy12
@sy12 5 дней назад
Yeah I think that’s what most people are missing. It was a consensus last year that the lakers had a great offseason with all the moves. Then the injuries and ham’s rotation mistakes cost the team. And I think we dodged a bullet with klay choosing mavs. Knect feels like a young klay. The real mistake imo was not picking up Derek jones jr and letting clippers get him. I was so sure lakers would get him after he signed with klutch right before free agency began. When asked what was offseason priority Nico Harrison said jones jr was priority #1. We could’ve stole him while mavs were distracted with klay. And he signed for way less than klay and below the mle.
