Emil von Sauer was a pupil of Liszt (1811-1886), who made probably the most successful recordings of any of the Liszt pupils. Sauer was noted for his aristocratic approach to music-making, with lashings of charm, elegance and style backed up by phenomenal technique.
This etude is one of Liszt's concert etudes, and the performance was recorded in 1928.

This is the best interpretation I’ve heard of gnomenreigen. No coincidence that he was Liszt’s pupil.

So beautiful and poetic. I'm quite certain it is what Liszt wanted. Sauer was his student and he would know. Claudio Arrau recorded the piece a number of times, and alway at abt.this tempo. When he spoke of his studies in Berlin with Martin Krause, Liszt's last pupil Claudio Arrau's principal teacher and mentor, Arrau said Krause always emphasized that Liszt should be played as music, and not as virtuoso circus antics.

Not surprisingly, some of the best interpretations I've heard of Liszt's pieces were from Arrau, von Sauer, and Katsaris (sometimes): all three have pedagogical lineages leading back to Liszt! In fact, Katsaris's teacher's teacher was von Sauer himself.

Great magician of music. When your soul and mind are sane, theres no past or future more for you, only eternal presence. Welcome back to the 19th century good times, Always feels as good as a walk in the mountains.

Exceptional interpretation. Not making concessions to a more moderate andamento, he still doesn't rush out of an emergency to show mechanical skills. Virtuosity and poetry making for beautiful music.

Fantastic performance! As close to Liszt's playing as it gets, as he was a pupil of the great man!

I wonder if this is the closest to Liszt's intentions. Thank you. I wish I had lived then. The world today is horrendous. No art!

Quite possibly was. He was one of Liszt's star pupils.

If I thought you were familiar with the recordings and contemporary commentary on Sauer it might be worthwhile. Your comment implies you don't really know his recordings (of which there are many) or that you don't really understand them.

What a ludicrous and ill-informed assessment of Sauer.
